Physical (2021)
A true gem
UPDATE: In season 3, I miss Sheila's voice as she confronts real everyday struggles and battles personal demons. It's almost like she replaced an eating disorder with Schizophrenia.
Also, I miss Bunny and felt she was a strong but under-utilized character.
I loved the character-building through complex/quirky but real/relatable (yet not necessarily likable) characters played by lesser-known actors in seasons1&2, so the introduction of Zooey Deschanel playing a blond bombshell/Southern bel/catty aerobics instructor seems out of sync.
STILL... Creator Annie Weisman is a genius--obviously.
Brilliant casting and acting all-around (lead Rose Byrne is outstanding). The show touches on some real issues (especially relating to women's roles, mental health, power struggles, weight, sex, sexual abuse, and disordered eating), yet things manage to stay light and understated.
This is the kind of show that either will resonate, or it won't. It blends style, quirkiness, and vulnerability up in a half-hour show with relatable, complex, flawed-but-lovable characters.
Refreshing. The best of Apple Originals.
