Average Film for an Average Story
28 April 2012
Until quite recently I was an avid comic book reader. I've read a few Cpt. America, including his origin story and it's a great story, but I feel it's nothing to write home about. Needless to say, I figured this film would be the same going in and I was right. It's a great film and to be honest I don't think they could have done anything to improve it, I especially like Evans and Weaver. So, I would mark this film down as a success. It's a really solid film, I especially like the war themes and I actually like the outfit more than the comic book version. Saying this, if you absolutely love the Captain America story, you'll probably love this film! I think Evans will be great in The Avengers.

"Wa.. Wait a second. A REAL film... in 21st century cinema?"
19 February 2012
They were my exact words after getting a feel for this film.

I'll be honest; when I first read, "A mysterious Hollywood stuntman, mechanic and getaway driver lands himself in trouble when he helps out his neighbour." I had no interest in viewing this title. I just though it would be too much like Transporter (Jason Statham)and that film bored me to tears; but, boy, was I wrong! Drive is not a movie, it's a piece of art.

My friend convinced me to watch it and I've been thanking him ever since. The film is so stylish and has such a 'noir' feel to it. Definitely the coolest film of 2011.

One thing I can guarantee is you'll be after the soundtrack once you see this film. Absolutely perfect. It is so strange, yet it works for the movie so well. Nicolas Winding Refn ceases to hypnotise me with his fantastic direction and dedication to detail. Ryan Gosling truly shows his stuff in this movie. I was so shocked by some of his actions and equally shocked by his mental threshold. His character is stone face and so mysterious, it's great; and he is, of course, supported by some fantastic actors, one definitely being Bryan Cranston... that man is a God! This is a very unique film and it can't be missed, I'm glad I changed my mind about watching it. After so many tacky flicks, this has restored my faith in cinema.

Art
23 December 2011
This is one of those movies that are genuine pieces of art; a very rare thing. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a truly beautiful film. It's cute, quirky and very deep. Joel Barish (portrayed beautifully by Carrey) is an "every guy". At least, that is how I feel. The movie's title is based on a beloved quote by Alexander Pope, which is very fitting given the context of the film: How happy is the blameless vestal's lot! The world forgetting, by the world forgot. Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind! Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd; Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet are an adorable team with great support from Elijah Wood, Tom Wilkinson, Kirsten Dunst, David Cross, and others. The time-line of the film is very clever, but not too confusing. I feel obligated to mention the sound track as it is a fantastic atmosphere setter! I won't go into the plot as you've most probably read it on the title page. I really recommend this film, it's a milestone!

Beautiful. Don't let the negative reviews repel.
30 November 2011
I really wanted to watch this film but I didn't have the time when it was in theatres. So I recently treated myself to the Blu Ray copy. I decided to check the user reviews before watching it and was very surprised by the amount of negative feedback. The reviews were almost hate posts! So, I put the disc in with mixed expectations and afterwards, I sat, glued to the credits thinking "what was their problem?!" Truly a beautiful film. Don't set out expecting an action packed bad-ass picture (I think that was the problem with most of the negative reviewers). Though not as frequent as your everyday action film, the action scenes are just as exciting as ever. If you liked the fighting techniques in Taken, imagine a teenage girl pulling off moves just as hardcore, if not more. The visuals and sounds of the film are nothing short of artistic. I give it an 8 out of ten. Not the best film of 2011, but definitely not the worst.

Fantastic
15 November 2011
I was first told of this film by my brother. I was very intrigued by the concept and after finding Justin Timberlake is the protagonist, I was sold, based on his heart-wrenching performance in Alpha Dog. I went in to the theatre with expectations of a "good watch", I wasn't at all prepared for how epic the films was due to the fact I had not seen a single trailer or TV spot for it. Timberlake and Seyfried are a great team and Cillian Murphy is as gloriously stone-hearted as ever. It's a very surreal world, given that everyone in the movie looks 25 or under and you are really pulled into it. The sympathy I felt for these people in the 'ghetto' who had to borrow minutes of a friend's time just to stay alive long enough to get paid was massive. Without babbling on, I'll leave you with the notion that the film has a similar atmospheric feel to Inception. Enjoy!
