The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
The perfect conclusion to the one of a kind epic trilogy.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is one of the best movies of 2003, if not in history of adventure movies. This movie was filled with numerous battles sequences and contained more dialogue than the first two movies. Some critics believe this dragged on the ending, however, it was crucial for the conclusion of the trilogy since it doesn't leave any loose ends. Personally, I'd rather have a long ending than be left hanging and compelled to wonder at after the movie is over (although with this movie, it wouldn't have mattered since I've read the books by J.R.R. Tolkein). Unlike the ending to the Matrix trilogy, Matrix Revolutions, this movie has set raised the standards of epic movies and most likely, we will never again be able to have such an experience as with the Lord of the Rings series. Such scenes as the battle scene with Frodo and the Spider, as well as the attack on Mordor will leave many breathless. Overall rating 9.8/10
American Pie (1999)
A very stereotyped, comedy concerning the extremities of High School Life
I saw this movie a few years ago when I was around 14. I must say, I was pretty disturbed with some parts of the movie, especially since I saw this as a freshman in high school. Thinking back on it, it was a mostly an amusing movie with a weak plot. The main character in this movie, Jim Levinstein (Jason Biggs), is a senior in high school and he is urging his girlfriend, Nadia (Shannon Elizabeth), to have sex with him. In the end she does after the senior prom. Jim tries everything from giving her an orgasm through oral sex to sweet-talking/persuasion. This story is surrounded by the issues of Jim¡¯s schoolmates, Chris 'Oz' Ostreicher (Chris Klein), Kevin Myers (Thomas Ian Nicholas), Steve Stifler (Seann William Scott), Paul Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas), and Chuck Sherman (Chris Owen). Jim and his friends make a ¡°pact¡± to all get laid (have intercourse) before high school graduation. All of his friends succeed, except for Chris, who ends up finding his ¡°true love,¡± Heather (Mena Suvari). There are many entertaining scenes, especially with Jim¡¯s father (Eugene Levy), Jim getting caught many times doing¡¦ erm.. ¡°inappropriate things.¡± It is a stereotyped movie that adds funny scenes concerning high school, senior prom, and sex. I¡¯m sure some of this happens in the high schools around the US, but I¡¯m sure that not all students have sex after senior prom, as this movie alludes.
The Prince of Egypt (1998)
Enjoyable Family Animation
***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS*** ¡°Prince of Egypt¡± is based on the bible story of Moses, one of the greatest prophets mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible, also found in the Torah. The Pharaoh of Egypt orders all male infants under the age of 2 to be killed, thrown into the Nile River, fearing the growing population of the slave race, the Israelites. Unable to bear having her child killed, a mother weaves a basket, places her baby in the basket and tells her young daughter, Miriam to place the basket in a stream. She hopes and prays that the baby will be safe and fortunately, the basket it found by the pharaoh¡¯s daughter, the princess. She takes the baby in, naming him Moses. Moses grows up in the palace, with his younger brother. He is always getting into trouble and seems as if he doesn't quite fit in well among the other Egyptians. After he is grown and reaching adulthood, he sees hieroglyphic writing on the walls of the palace showing the annihilation of the Israeli baby boys. He finds out that he is actually an Israelite and he leaves after being convicted as a murderer. He moves far away, marries Zipporah, and has children. Moses works as a herdsman but is called on by God. He eventually obeys, going to Egypt ordering his ¡°brother¡± who is now pharaoh, ¡°Let my people go.¡± The 10 plagues follow, and it was amusing to see the pharaoh¡¯s magicians attempting to perform the same miracles that Moses does. In the end, the Pharaoh gives up but later changes his mind and the parting of the sea occurs. This movie is a good family film, but definitely not a masterpiece. The climax was well displayed and it¡¯s a good animated film for children and their parents to watch. Since it¡¯s based on a bible story, it¡¯s plot is developed and clear. Overall, this movie gets a 7 out of 10.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
Not so Magical After all
When the Harry Potter books first came out and began to capture the interests children and adults alike, I just brushed it off as another fad that would stay for a while and disappear without a trace. I wasn't interested in the books at all until one of my closest friends suggested that I read it. At first I declined and thought it would go against my style if I was sucked into the Potter craze. Then one day at the library, I noticed an entire shelf committed to Harry Potter books, written by the much loved author, J.K. Rowling. "What harm could it do? I'll just read it, and then I can say 'I told you so' if i hate it." So, I borrowed all four books, took them home, and began to read. I was in for the biggest surprise of my life. I actually liked these books! I couldn't put them down, and I though I hate being proven wrong, a little part of me was glad that I had borrowed and read these books. Then I bought all four books from BN and anticipated the upcoming movie, "Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone." After seeing the movie on the first day it came out (perhaps it was all the propaganda going around) I thought it was "great." I saw it twice more and began to realize this movie wasn't that great. Some of the scenes in the novel are cut out, (some of them were my favorite), and was much disappointed in that. Other than that, I didn't imagine Professor M. to be that old. Sure, I knew she was old, but not THAT old. Hagrid wasn't that bad, except he appeared to be more stupid or absent minded in the movie than he had in the book. "I shouldn't have said that." was repeated way too many times to receive laughter.
Hermione - where's the big teeth?
Ron - He was "ok" in my comparison to the book.
Harry - harry was supposed to be small and skinny in the book. Maybe daniel radcliffe should lose a few pounds so he can look a bit thinner.
Malfoy - In my opinion, he perfectly matched the look.
It's all my opinion, but overall the movie was maybe a 5.4 out of 10, that is, if you've read the book. I didn't think it was all that great after watching it 4 times and began picking up flaws. But if you haven't read the books and plan to watch it once or twice, it'll be around 8.3 - 8.7 range. I hope the next movie will be better.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
A Bold Fairy Tale - Capture the Magic
Last year, I saw both the Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the RIng and Harry Potter: The Sorceror's Stone. I've read both the Harry Potter (up to the 4th) as well as the Lord of the Rings series and The Hobbit. The Lord of the Rings, was, by far, the better movie (from my point of view).
Sure, the movie wasn't exactly like the book, but still, the drama, action, suspense, it was all there. This movie has been one of the best movies I've seen. The graphics shown in the movie, the costume, make up, it'll all take your breath away. From humor to love, tears to laughter, this movie has it all. The battle for Middle Earth has begun in this movie. And I will anxiously await the next movie, coming out this December (correct me if I'm wrong).
The movie gets a 9.4 out of 10. If you haven't seen this in the theaters, you definitely want to borrow or even buy the DVD or VHS and watch this masterpiece. (I'm not trying to sell or stuff, I'm just saying this is good.) Especially if you're planning to watch the sequel, you should watch this first (it's like watching Star Wars Episode 2 without having watched all the previous Star Wars). Capture the magic with this bold fairy tale that goes beyond anything "Cinderella" had to offer. It's a fantasy movie that is completely different from anything you've ever watched.
