I Am Virgin (2010 Video)
3/10
Low budget campy, silly I Am Legend adult parody
25 May 2024
Given its very low IMDB rating (currently 1.9) and the lack of total reviews with most being one stars. Had no expectations and watched expected something entirely terrible but mildly amusing.

This film is essentially best enjoyed not to take serious and understand its low budget with amateur actors (apparently this was the lead actor's first film), with actual adult stars.

Still the acting is terrible and unintentionally funny at times, mainly with the lead Robby speaking to himself and his dog. We even get the classic Jaws line (54:02) with him in the adult store holding an adult toy saying "we're gonna need a bigger boat".

The plot is nonexistent with just Robby being the last human wondering around the deserted city of Portland, due to its virus wiping humans out. We see him doing things as shopping, playing golf and of course wander into strip clubs, adult dvd shops and hospitals.

The main hurdle here is given in its title, Robby is a virgin and as he goes from venue he sees these attractive vampire women performing. Of course he's tempted in getting involved as we see him creeping in on each act, but his thought is justified thinking that if he does get involved, the vampires will bite him turning himself into a vampire.

There are lot of goofiness like scenes with him webcaming himself talking about his day, continually complaining about being a virgin and his current situation.

One highlight is a random five minute cameo by beloved Ron Jeremy (1:14:35) as the elder vampire giving our lead advice.

As expected there are about five explicit soft core scenes (apparently these brief scenes were edited and taken from adult soft core Vamp Vixens), and these scene last around 3-5 minutes. Starts early around 9:40, others 34:25, 45:30, 54:25, 1:06:10. With each scene it's edited with glimpses of Robby peeping on the act deciding what to do.

The end sees him going in a daytime strip club (the world known "Lucky Devil") and being confronted by all the vampire women whom he seen previously before with him giving the monologue chronicling back to the opening of the film. He ponders whether he would partake but ultimately decides not to then he leaves.

Then we see him back home on the webcam essentially saying he's saving himself for "the right girl". Movie ends.

Again not a film to be taken serious, and is essentially an unfunny and awkward adult spoof but it's nothing to be upset about watching. Don't expect anything great and you may enjoy the unintentional comical relief.

Bird Box (2018)
7/10
Intriguing futuristic apocalyptic thriller
24 May 2024
Considering the massive amount of hype from its Netflix release back in December 2018. Bird Box is most definitely a polarizing type film and one of Netflix's biggest streaming films of all time.

There are definitely a lot to enjoy here. It does start off relatively slower with its introduction to the characters.

People compared Bird Box to the Quiet Place, suggesting Bird Box ripped off the Quiet Place considering they were released both in 2018 with Bird Box being released after, but this film is apparently based on a novel which was released before A Quiet Place was in production. Reminded somewhat also to the Happening or the Road.

At first slightly confused in it's storytelling non linear arc with it's flashback scenes going back and forth to the present time. After a while, though this was well done showing the events leading up to the present time.

The acting is definitely passable and convincing. A lot of different supporting characters who one by one eventually get eliminated. Sandra Bullock shows her range but her character was rather obnoxious but given the situation it was somewhat reasonable and realistic.

The film really gets further intriguing around the scene when the other pregnant woman lets in the last survivor into their home. We as the audience immeasurably know that he isn't who he's presenting himself with all the characters besides Douglas (John Malcovich) thinking he's trustworthy. Of course in the end he goes rogue and the violence gets turned up a notch. Several gruesome but creative deaths ensue.

From there it seemingly fast forwards five years later and things are about the same, as in still an apocalypse needing to wear blindfolds outside and such. Now the children are older (about five years old) and the lone survivors are Malorie and Tom.

The very ending seeing Malorie and the kids finding a proper shelter (apparently being a school for "the blind") was a clever unpredictable twist.

However still we are left with questions unanswered such as: what is the cause of people turning crazy from seeing sunlight? How were some people not affected by it? How quickly exactly do you become possessed if you see sunlight? Couldn't they have taken very little peeks with their eyes and things would have been fine?

Overall even with its flaws and somewhat questionable situations, the film, especially more so the second act of the film is highly entertaining and rather quite thought provoking.

Perhaps this is one of those films that you either love or hate. Definitely a wide variety of opinions.

Real Steel (2011)

Cliched but uplifting underdog story
24 May 2024
This is very much a classic tale of an underdog success story from rags to riches. Very few prominent robot films in mainstream Hollywood.

The action sequences with the effects of the robots are very well done. The overall look and designs of the robots are well designed and it shows the creativity of these artists.

The father son relationship is something which many people love seeing and although it is predictable, it's more about the journey along the way seeing the eventual growth of these characters.

The story did grow once the son found the deserted robot "Atom" and it becomes more about him and the robot. Of course from there, we get the sense of where's it going, but it is wholesome in the sense of fatter and son bonding.

Several highlights including one of the robot boxing matches with Atom and the red robot with two heads. Very thrilling and great choreographed. The finale robot battle with the great Zeus was also great all be it predictable.

Considering this was a family targeted film, a happy ending here was definitely needed in a feel good way.

Turned up the speed in this sequel
23 May 2024
After the first film of the franchise we could see that there was definitely a lot of things done right with the original but also a lot more they could expand on. This follow up is most definitely more enjoyable and highly entertaining. It feels very much more in tuned with the video games. We can see more similarities in this follow up to the video games as opposed to the original film. First with the introduction to beloved characters of Tails and Knuckles (surprisingly greatly voiced by Idris Elba). The finale action sequence are top notch with the inclusion of the giant robot form from Dr. Robotnik. This design was really well done.

Although they could have toned down on the childish comedy humor but it's expected given the family nature audience. Overall this follow-up was entertaining, more keyed in on detailed to the games, and much more focus on Sonic than on James Marsden's character (opposite of the original). Anticipating the third film.

Solid origin start to a successful video game adapted franchise
23 May 2024
Highly anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog film based on the highly beloved video game franchise from Sega. This film does a lot of things correctly. The model look of Sonic is definitely well done and the voice acting is great. It is equivalent to how we would expect Sonic to sound based on the more updated games and its television series.

James Marsden does a likeable portrayal as the lead character while the other actors are decent enough. Since this is the first film of the franchise and we see the start and origin of the character of Sonic, Marsden is more of the central character as we are learning about his story arc. Of course in the following films we expect the main focus to be on Sonic.

Trying to adapt to new times in a new age
22 May 2024
Apparently some may consider Bad Boys for Life as a fresh take on a classic duo. However after watching this film, felt that this was another film from the 1990's to adapt to the current new age era. The original was released in 1995 with the second film eight years later in 2003. Now it's seventeen years later from the second to this third instalment.

The action is solid as they do in these films but nothing exactly stood out in terms of great over the top action scenes.

Years later, the chemistry between both Will Smith and Martin Lawrence is still there but a lot of the back and forth banter is just tiresome and irritating. Lawrence is incredibly more annoying here than he was in the previous films.

Also the constant callbacks to the Bad Boys theme song with the characters singing the song and alluding to it was off putting. It was okay one time but it was a running gag continuity throughout the entirety of the film and the more it went, the more annoying it became. This was simply a nostalgia technique to make fans reminisce but one didn't find it humorous.

The third act twist was intriguing but something to add to make it more worthwhile. Ultimately it was predictable and felt forced.

More suited for biopic racing fans
21 May 2024
Seemingly such high praise since it's released all around. This film is definitely well written, well acted and directed. However for those not familiar with the historical aspect of the story may find it to be lacking of interest. Did not know much of its history and thus did not care too much for the results of the film. Although of course, the acting is top notch by both Matt Damon and Christian Bale, and they are interesting to watch as a whole. The other characters not so much.

However this feels like one of those films that's seemingly suspenseful but is also mildly boring, at least after a while of it. It feels quite long as well. There are entertaining scenes and does pick past midway, around when we see Bale test driving the cars.

The Gigolo (2015)
5/10
Rather intriguing Korean tale
20 May 2024
The plot synopsis and description describes this film as comedy drama teen thriller erotic type film and it does seem to mesh these genres.

It starts off quite like a teen film with our lead Fung attending school (age didn't seem to be mentioned but assumed to be of at least 18 in high school) then an incident with a bully gets him expelled. Needing money to support his sickly mother he goes to work at his aunt's (or cousin?) club as a janitor. Almost immediately he gets noticed by a client of a gigolo. It was rather quick and unrealistic in a sense but this film has a lot of unrealistic aspects.

Of course it wasn't his intention in becoming a gigolo but he quickly changed a tune once offered a lot of money.

There are a lot of innuendos made by characters referring to his package size throughout to the point where it feels entirely forced and unrealistic.

There are several explicit and nude scenes however none actually showing his. One quite lengthy scene is with him and one of his client (whom later is revealed to be the step mother of his girlfriend- very coincidental but it's possible, around 56:40- 1:00:40).

The film seemingly flips when he suddenly does an acting shoot for a film about being a gigolo (the girlfriend didn't know he was actually one).

A lot of forced comical relief in this film doesn't feel authentic, especially in the first half. The drama is the better aspect.

It starts off interesting. Drags somewhat afterwards then its conclusion finale was incredibly unpredictable and turned more to a violent off putting thriller.

Around where Fung meets his girlfriend's father at a house dinner a lot of chaos occurs as it becomes quite entertaining. It then ramps up its violence with its finale once the father finds Fung's secret.

Somewhat feels forced but it's different than the typical Hollywood film endings we are accustomed to.

Depending on what you may expect, this film isn't exactly great but has a certain unpredictable and an entertainment factor.

Low budget witchcraft horror with nothing to expect
20 May 2024
Relatively a low budget amateur independent. There are many type of films such as this but we just expect entertainment and creativity. The plot isn't exactly anything new or complex regarding a woman moving into a new area then seemingly being conducted into a cult of witches for their witchcraft.

With a short runtime only being an hour so the first half is essentially the introduction of the lead character Morgan.

The film progressed more into the second half once she moves into the new place and is introduced by the other woman.

Quickly there brief skin scene of Ivy Smith (Attack of the 50 Foot Cam girl) around 31:47 simply to release tension.

Following this, essentially the second half revolves around these woman stripping and prancing around a bonfire practicing witchcraft (36:45) These scenes essentially last about the remaining 20 minutes, including an explicit scene where the devil randomly appears and performs on the lead character starting around 48:15 - 50:00. The visual is definitely more blurry for an effect which works.

This is simply a film not to think too much about and to expect much. Nothing exactly new, clever or thought provoking. Outside of those brief scenes, nothing is memorable.

Fast X (2023)
5/10
Confusing at times and too comical
17 May 2024
With this latest instalment of the Fast and Furious franchise, this film adds more new characters as well as bringing back several previous ones. At times it felt a little too cluttered with these characters that there wasn't much focus solely on them.

The main plot revolving Dom being on the run from Jason Mamoa's character Dante and with the inclusion of apparently a new look son (nicknamed Little B), with John Cena's character. The other leads of Roman, Tej, Han and Ramsey did their similar routine in another heist like setting.

There are impressive action sequences such as the opening bomb chase, the street race in Brazil with Dom, Dante and Elena's sister. The visuals and camera work is top notch as always but the main problem is the story isn't quite fleshed out and feels a little too cluttered. Other subplots include Letty and Charlize Theron's character, the random addition of Brie Larson, then Jason Statham's reappearance. Also several other reappearances by key characters after the post credit scene.

A lot of the film just felt a little too comical, mainly due to the over the top cartoonish performance from Jason Mamoa. His character wasn't menacing and it seemed like he was doing a Joker impression. Then John Cena's interactions with Dom's son and of course the banter with Roman and Tej. It was simply too much and at times felt forced.

Fast X isn't terrible, has things working for it but also several flaws. Did not overly enjoy Fast 9 too much but think that was slightly better than Fast 10.

Modern bar character study drama
16 May 2024
With no knowledge and having not viewed any trailers prior to watching this film, this film is quite a well written character study slower paced drama. Both leads are likeable enough although do questionable things which ultimately left them in dangerous situations.

Apparently many people who watched this film expected something quite different than what was given. Perhaps more of a thriller type with action but what we see is a character study paced drama. The acting is top notch and the scenery and setting is simple enough. The film is clearly not meant to be complex or filled with suspense and twists. Those reviews claiming that nothing happens or that the film is boring, most definitely weren't paying too close attention and expected something entirely different. Although the plot is quite simple, it does feel like it could be the plot to an episode of Two Broke Girls.

This is definitely a film in which critics liked a lot more than the typical casual mainstream audience, as suggested by both its IMDB rating and its RottenTomatoes rating (their is an alarming difference between critics rating and audience rating). Overall this film is easy to watch given its short run time but don't expect too much out of the ordinary.

Emotional quenching apocalyptic thriller
16 May 2024
Released during the Covid pandemic times, as a result its box office revenue suffered and it somewhat fell under the radar. This movie definitely has feel to have been a big hit, similar to the Maze Runner films but not as big.

Lead by a strong and likeable performance by Dylan O'Brien, this film has several positive and enjoyable factors going for it. First the overall atmosphere and scenery of the apocalyptic type world is stunning. The outdoors is great looking. The monster look creative and like fictional type creatures we would see in fantasy novels. Although there could have been more showings and descriptions of more creatures.

The story here is simple but emotional and well crafted. The introduction to the character was a strong way in giving its backdrop. Then as it fast forwards to the present time, we get an understanding of the lead character Joel (Dylan O'Brian) and his motives.

However besides Joel, there wasn't time to get to know any of the characters in his original colony. It's off how they didn't seem to care for him in the beginning then once he leaves to find his girlfriend Aimee. Perhaps there were too many characters and not enough time to develop each of them. In the end there obviously was a strong connection but we couldn't name any of their names. The ending was slightly bizarre and not fully explained. Why would he feel the need to leave Aimee to go back to the people who didn't care for him.

Overall it's a solid adventure action movie with a sense of heart and more thoughtful than initially expected.

The Outfit (2022)
7/10
Dialogue driving single setting crime drama
15 May 2024
Relatively this film didn't do to well at the box office as it isn't exactly a high octane action blockbuster or a well know franchise. Repeatedly a well crafted and well acted thought provoking crime drama that delivers in a very older school fashion type way. Lead by Mark Rylance in a role in which he has seemingly done before, although he shines here as he carries the film. The other supporting cast are solid but at times their acting feels more cartoonish.

This film starts relatively slow and doesn't exactly get too interesting once one key character dies. From there it becomes more of a mafia and very dialogue driven slow roaster drama. It further picks up its intensity once the mob boss (possibly) father is introduced. It's also rare for a film to be as interesting with relatively a single setting. All taken place inside the tailor's shop.

There are of course several twist and turns within the film but none are too outlandish and not exactly shocking. The Outfit may be slow but requires heavy attention to detail and becomes more intriguing as the film progresses.

Night Teeth (2021)

Stylish different vampire tale
13 May 2024
Without viewing trailers or reading too much plot information regarding the film, many may not realize this is a vampire film. Released on Netflix in 2021 there was somewhat of a buzz surrounding this film.

It's very stylish and the scenery and camera shots of the city, the mansions, the overall clothing are top notch and give the film a very lavish feel about it. The color gradients are always interesting and it's nice to look at. Very similar in a sense to the John Wick films. The trio leads are interesting and likeable enough to keep us entertained.

Starts off quite intriguing, becomes rather slow in the middle and slightly confusing at times but the conclusion finale was well done. Although the ending was rather predictable, the final scene seemed open ended and up for interpretations.

Surfer, Dude (2008)
4/10
Mindless surfer comedy
12 May 2024
Apparently not much surfing is in this film and it's very loosely a comedy. Nothing is exactly clever, witty or even funny. It feels more so like a loose documentary about surfing. Matthew McConaughey plays his role as expected. The other characters don't make much of an impression.

The film definitely isn't great but has a certain feel good charm about it that's mildly entertaining. The slight twist in the end is something to keep watching for.

Surfer, Dude has a runtime of one hour twenty five minutes and the storyline doesn't exactly go anywhere but as been said there is an interest in McConaughey's character, Steve Addington. There are several scenes of pool party type scenes with women in bikinis and several showing skin. Lastly it has a 'summer love' fling thing going on and it's just an all around calm, laid-back kind of feel to it.

Intriguing watch but decline in seasons
8 May 2024
Having originally watched season one when it was first released and enjoying it as a standalone product. From being a fan of the film, expected certain similarities as well alas mainly differences. The series divulges more considering it explores more characters and plots.

Season one was very entertaining, intriguing and each episode felt thrilling and there was something new that kept you guessing. It wasn't too cluttered with characters and the main characters were majorly focused. The constant guessing of the Mr. Wilford was intriguing.

Season 2 was watched recently after several years after its release. Had forgotten a lot of which occurred in season 1. However season 2 was still intriguing mainly with the actual presence of Mr. Wilford and Alexandra (daughter of Melanie). Andre Layton was less of a focus which was for the better, as his character is irritating and not too likeable.

Season 3 feels more of a decline compared to the first two seasons and it's noticeable. A lot of the newer characters aren't too interesting as well as Melanie being absent for a majority of the season. Mr Wilford also takes a backseat as he's more a reserved role. There's just a lot of uninteresting content and storylines that feel to drag on.

Apparently there will be season 4 which is slated to be its final season. Surprised considering the decline in content and overall viewership rating.

Untold: Malice at the Palace (2021)
Season 1, Episode 1
7/10
Mind provoking and eye opening
6 May 2024
Based upon one of the infamous brawls in the NBA, this apparent Untold documentary series quite dispatches the events of the Malice at the Palace. Not much new information is shared in which people who are familiar of the in depth situation haven't seen or heard of already. Although it is very well made and well edited. Great transitions throughout. It isn't too long and it focuses more so on the main players point of views.

Released in 2021, nearly 17 years after the brawl occurre, it still felt like many of the people didn't take accountability or were still playing the victim. Noticeable from the Pistons fan who was interviewed, as well as former Pacers players Jermaine O'Neal and Stephen Jackson, and former Piston Ben Wallace. The main culprit in Ron Artest definitely seemed more fazed and realized his mistake, although still had a jokey sense to him. These events did have an apparent impact on the then-future of the league.

For something released nearly 17 years since the incident, a lot of the footage used was actually clear and easy to identify. It is highly impressive how many different cameras are monitored in these sporting arenas events. We can only image how many more there are and higher quality is in today's time. We sort of question as to why it took 17 years for this documentary to come out.

Lastly as another reviewer pointed out, this is quite a short docu-series episode and it did feel like some things were missing. Felt like they have added in more but the way it is, is still highly informative and eye opening.

Change in time and outcome
6 May 2024
The latest and most recent Terminator film sees this film in somewhat of a different direction. The visuals, special effects and scenery look great and are well polished.

The plot has very little differences nor set itself apart from the previous sequels . It goes full circle to the early Terminator sequels. As it is apparently a direct sequel to T2.

It would have made some difference if we saw another character or main character become enhanced with the future technology but this is just a pallette swap of the John Connor story. The character of Grace is incredibly unlikeable as we are meant to root for her.

Now Arnold's character mainly plays a cameo and reliving certain moments shown in previous films. He really makes his appearance around an hour eight minutes into the film.

Overall Dark Fate does something enjoyable but for the most part is more so average and overly confusing.

Paradise City (2021– )
6/10
Occasionally interesting but flawed
2 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
After enjoying the film American Satan, seemingly this follow up or spinoff had some anticipation. Paradise City doesn't explain much after it left off from the film so for those who have not watched American Satan may be confused at certain things and the characters. The lead of Johnny Faust is the same actor but the major change is the character of Lily (now portrayed by Bella Thorne- the character almost feels entirely different). Perhaps they could have cast an unknown actress for the role of Lily.

A main problem with the show is it feels somewhat cluttered with many different subplots and an overload of characters. The first few episodes these characters were seemingly unconnected but eventually within the final three episodes we start getting a sense of connection and the reason as to why they were heavily featured. Mainly referring to Cameron Boyce's character. It was very clear in the final episode they had major plans for him in the follow up season but due to his real life death we doubt there will a second season.

Also there were many short scenes which jumps very quickly from scene to scene. They try to cram in everything into one episode. Perhaps they could have made each episode about an hour opposed to its 35 - 40 minute runtime. The final two episodes were very good but the finale felt like there were things unanswered, and it looked obvious they were going to explain things for the next season but it's been over three years and still no second season.

At times it felt like Johnny or his wife Gretchen were supporting roles though their storylines were the most prominent. Some unnecessary characters which dragged episodes down such as the other bands (Over it all) along with the other struggling rap artist Fritz. Also the band members besides Johnny and Lily were unlikeable and didn't exactly have much to do except be there and nag on Johnny. The trio of them weren't great, specifically the two British acts.

For instance it wasn't too clear who exactly were the characters of Gabriel and Capricorn. Were we to believe Gabriel was a guardian angel figure (good person) while Capricorn was more so Satan (bad person). We wonder as to why none of the main characters in the end questioned as to who they were and why they were seemingly everywhere. Assumed Gretchen was going to do so but nothing happened. The very last scene showed her (Capricorn) taking the photograph of the entire group with a very strange grin.

Overall this tv series should be viewed after watching the film American Satan. The film is a lot more raw, supernatural, unhinged and doesn't exactly hold back. It's better because there's more focus on the main plot and it isn't cluttered with supporting characters. Paradise City is solid but definitely feels quite tamer, more drama based realistic which was expected. Somewhat disappointing but given it's only 8 episodes it is relatively quick to binge the entire season all at once.

Visually stunning post apocalyptic thriller
28 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Now the main selling point of this film would appear to be its stunning visuals and overall atmosphere and tone of the film. The plot deals with two siblings whom wander their way into a destructive abandon building and find a strange older man. Most of the film is quite disturbing showing strong explicit scenes with bright colors, cannibalism type doings and other sorts of content.

The strange man is entertainingly disturbing and creepy while the lead actress is the highlight and steals her scenes (resembles a little of Ana de Armas). The first act is at its best where the shock value explicit scenes (33:20, 36:00, 42:50) are present. Things just go from weird to weirder and the second half is where the red, orange, black and bright color gradients are present. The film somewhat goes downhill once the strange man is seemingly brought back from being dead. A lot more randomness but still fun to watch.

The last 30 minutes feels like nothing really happens and we aren't sure whether what occurs on screen is a dream like sequence or real. Including a more hyper three some explicit scene at 1:09:20. Later random people appear out of nowhere. The very ending with an unknown person waking up and going in a normal looking city is entirely confusing. What did this mean or represent? Was everything a dream?

This film is most definitely better than its current 4.7 IMDB. Perhaps it's just too "pretentious", disturbing and arthouse for most.

Quietly suspenseful and layered
28 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Although the plot description made this film seem more like the typical web cam voyeur film, there was more to it than it was presumed. It is quite an intriguing and at many times suspenseful slow burner paced drama.

The overall color scheme and look of the film is very nicely done. The opening colors stand out as the beginning scene shows the lead actor Oliver on a train apparently speaking to someone conducting an interview of sorts. It's noted he is speaking in English. After a couple more minutes we see the title screen then the film truly begins and it's no longer in English (English subtitles are present).

What's intriguing about the film is both characters and the acting from the leads. Aurora, lead actress is captivating once we first see her on screen. Oliver looks noticeably older than Aurora and possibly more passable as her father than her brother but it's made clear they are only half siblings which would justify the age gap.

Some scenes may come off as predictable but enjoyable for the most part. Some certain instances which occur were questionable, such as why would Oliver confront and tell Aurora (his half-sister) he set up a camera and was spying on her? We don't exactly see when he set up the camera but it's made clear in one scene when we see Oliver looking at a red mask hanging up in the corner above a book shelf (when Aurora gets called outside by her mother). We are to assume this is when he placed the device? Then once she notices the camera, she doesn't bother removing it, which makes it seem like she was simply teasing him by allowing him to continue to spy on her.

A pivotal and foolish moment occurs later in the film when Oliver, Aurora, her friend and their boyfriends are picnicking in the woods, then Aurora goes to take a leak. Naturally Oliver follows her then once he sees her, he starts the fondling. They begin to further make out and suddenly her boyfriends quietly approaches them and spots them in action. Both Aurora and Oliver were unaware of him seeing them, and this is where things spiral further for both heads. Quite a brief explicit scene with them in the car after around 1:02:50.

Following these scenes, it's made clear that the boyfriend told Aurora's mother and her friend about what he saw in the woods. Next scene shows Aurora coming home with her mother dragging her down- which makes it clear that the boyfriend told her. Also then we see the boyfriend stalk Oliver to his house coming in with a bat and taking action.

Couple scenes later it seemingly fast forwards to Aurora sitting with a therapist, mentioning she's no longer with the boyfriend. Fast forward to the very ending. Oliver received a small envelope, he opens it up and it appears to be "hair". He gets a disturbed look on his face then starts washing his hands heavily. Scene and film abruptly ends.

Overall this film tells an intriguing yet slightly disturbing story, not for the casual mainstream audiences but with the writing, acting and characters it's thoughtfully entertaining and keeps you guessing.

Homesick (2015)

Intriguing on surface but not fully developed
27 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Apparently there were several edits and cuts to this film to cut the runtime down by a lot. The end result of the film doesn't feel as fully fleshed out or developed as it could have. The ending was disappointing and there were questions left unanswered. Such as why did her husband leave? Was it only due to the texts she received? Where does Charlotte and her half-brother Henrik leave off? What about Charlotte's mother and Charlotte. Did she ever find out?

With a film with several explicit but brief scenes throughout it does seem like those scenes were cut short. The film is filmed nicely, the acting is good. The story is solid but it somewhat drags along in the end. And the ending feels slightly rushed.

Based on real events but rather dull executed
27 April 2024
Apparently this film is based on real events as it's illustrated in the opening text of the film. The plot synopsis made it sound a lot more thrilling, suspenseful and disturbing then how it eventually became. It turned out to be a depressing drama.

The incident of the kidnapping and the actual act between the siblings occurred quite early (around 20 - 25 mins) which looked and felt relatively realistic. We are later noted that it was apart of a certain adult film series of sorts. The scene is quite lengthy as nudity of both actors are shown. It isn't too graphic. It's the actual thought of the act which is the disturbing part. Aside from this, there isn't any other tense scene (save for a bizarre and random rape scene towards the end (1:06:40)- which felt entirely out of place).

The acting by the lead of Daniel was rather weak as we could tell he didn't have much experience (apparently this was his very first role). The character seemed like the typical shy quiet teenager at first barely speaking then as the film progressed he seemed more like a psycho. The acting by the actress of Ana was a lot better.

After the incident occurred there was over an hour left of film and the remaining time was simply both characters moping around looking sad, depressed and traumatized by the incident. Although the incident was traumatic we wonder why neither of them told their parents, or Ana not telling her fiancé. She only tells a therapist but even so she didn't give her real name.

The film just has a depressing and dull feel. The two siblings act like it was the end of the world. If anything they were extremely lucky the kidnappers didn't kill them. They seemed to give them back their items (phones/wallets) and did no physical harm. Was expecting something entirely worse but they were ultimately left untouched. Perhaps the motives of the brother Daniel was due to jealousy of his sisters fiancé. The rape scene felt out of place and they didn't exactly discuss it later. Perhaps we are led to believe he had feelings for her which is why he did that? Overall this film feels like they could have done more and went a little more extreme. It ultimately felt tame.

Explicit over the top offbeat animation
26 April 2024
This film seem to have went under the radar and isn't exactly worldwide known as many of Rob Zombie's other films. The animation is the main reason for that. The animation is very solid, with a lot of bright colors, different characters and overall texture and feel.

The story is a decent enough watch but of course the selling point is the over the top nudity and language. It's not as funny as expected but it's clearly nothing to take too serious. The tone is meant for satire and not a heavy drama. Constant skin flaunting from the women and one highlight is the cat fight towards the end with Suzi X and Velvet Von Black (voice by Rosario Dawson). There's a funny song narrating throughout this.

Unlikeable lead in an overly explicit foreign cut
26 April 2024
Nothing appears to be off limits as a lot of these older foreign films (this is French made). The story is quite simple, about a school teacher whom seemingly is upset with her boyfriend by not satisfying her, so she explores other men in extreme lengths by cheating on him.

The acting of the lead actress seemed solid but her character was entirely unlikeable. She seemed lifeless and never quite happy. The boyfriend was okay while the other men were simply there.

A lot of skin throughout which is the selling point as is the lengthy unsimulated explicit scene with one of the men she meets at the shop (he was a professional adult star). Then there's a tie-up bondage scene with her and an older teacher (scene lasts quite long and this is where the movie seemingly becomes stale).

In the end this movie just moves at a slow pace and it's hard to root for her it her actions. Also quite a bizarre ending which was left unsatisfying.
