Cardboard Boxer (2016)
Right in the feels
I watched this movie with my 18 yer old daughter, she's on a Boyd Holbrook high at the moment after seeing Logan. There were parts of it that broke me. The despair, the hopelessness the isolation that must come with being homeless. The scene in the store when the little girl says she can smell something bad had me emotional. When Willie tries to sign up for the army and feels so useless he is willing to be a human shield, anything just to belong, Pinky's death (although not sure what happened, hypothermia perhaps). I wanted to clock those two dopey teenagers around the head and ground them for life. A great film I would highly suggest to anyone who wants to watch a proper decent film, but don't expect a Rocky meets The Pursuit of Happiness. It isn't a boxing movie and it isn't a rags to riches story, it is raw, and real and sad.
Berlin Station (2016)
It's not a super spy, flashy gadgets leaving bodies in the street kind of spy show...but that's OK
It's not Jason Bourne, it's not James Bond and perhaps that's why a lot of people seem to think it is dull. The real world of espionage is probably more dull than any of us will ever know. I have seen it being accused of being pro CIA, I don't think so personally, of course the characters in the show are going to think they are the proverbial "good guys" everyone thinks they are the good guys. But we are already starting to see that they aren't always the good guys. Some were already bashing it after just one episode.I think it's one of the better things I've seen just lately. Well worth a watch if you are actually looking for something half decent.
Carlos, Rey Emperador (2015)
If you liked Isabel you will love this
I have to date, only watched episode 1 but that is because my Spanish is appalling and I have to take it slow, I would LOVE to watch this with English subtitles. The story picks up after the death of Ferdinand (Fernando) and Charles' V arrival in Castile to a less than enthusiastic crowd. The costumes are wonderful and the acting is as I have seen so far very good, even if Álvaro Cervantes is not my idea of what the Holy Roman Emperor would have looked like. I am looking forward to watching the rest of this show I enjoyed Isabel so much and having watched what she and Ferdinand went through to unite Spain I am so invested in this story! A great watch for anyone interested in this period of time.On a side note I would love to see a future production on Philip II, Charles' son.
