Candyman (2021)
Aaaallllllll Aboard
Get your hate-hard-on for white people aboard the Hate Train. I was really hoping for a good horror flick w/ mind bending, psychotic, psychological twists. For example, the killings the audience sees. Is that for our benefit when really it's Anthony who's doing the killing? Nope! Turns out it's just a woke, cheesy horror flick ramming social justice down your throat. You've heard the mantra b/4: white people are bad, black people are wronged & woke-man, I mean candyman is here to make it "right". Another disappointment of movie making when you put ideology b/4 story telling. I give it a two for the acting & special effects.
Last Man Down (2021)
Last Loser Down
And here, ladies & gentlemen, is another shining example that gives all of us film making amateurs hope. Don't let fear of making a $hitty movie keep you from making your movie. IF your movie does turn out to suck, don't fret. You will be in good company.
The acting is lacking. Maybe, at one point there was hope for the script, but it died. Actors/stunt peeps responded prematurely. For example, a guy is falling backwards b/4 the bullet hits him.
I'm okay with a sparse dialogue, but it's so bad, it's painful. Speaking of painful, another scene has this guy telling his buddies back at base who the "timber man" is over the radio. But the transmission doesn't go thru b/c he took two steps inside this tunnel which caused interference. You or I probably would've taken two steps back out of the tunnel & repeated transmission, but not this guy.
I think that one reason you may watch the entire movie is b/c you're in shock. Does this movie really suck as bad as my brain screams that it does or might there be more? Like having a purpose. For example, I think a better ending would have been if the girl dropped her live grenades while in flight. That would've made the vials of her life saving blood left behind more meaningful.
Now I gotta take a shower & try to delete this debacle from memory.
Beyond White Space (2018)
Sometimes The Trailer Is The Best Part
So as I'm walking my dogs I'm thinking about why this movie sux. It wasn't the special effects. They were decent. The story had promise. It wasn't the acting. So why did it suck?
The premise is tough to get past. Living creatures roaming space. So let's say you're able to get past that. After all, Aliens (of the Sigourney Weaver kind) can function just fine in space. So the next hurdle is sound. You can't have sound in a vacuum. Some of these creatures can "roar". Does "roaring" require a diaphragm? Lungs? Throat? Air? Audiences can only take so much scientific BS before tuning out (remember the movie Wanted?)
Finally, there's the ending. Nobody gets any revenge, justice, or reward. And we're all being led to believe there's going be some satisfying closure. At least for the main character. We don't even know if the ICE chick is cured when she returns. One of the ending lines is, "We're picking up multiple life forms." But we only see one before the credits roll.
Everybody dies an ugly, lonely, sad death (except for ICE girl).
Although sad endings are actual realities of life, just know, people don't watch movies because they want to see a sad, empty, too many unknowns, ending. Their own life may be such.
I could've swallowed the BS of a more gratifying ending then the BS of too many scientific impossibilities.
Just saying. . .
Universal Soldier: The Return (1999)
What's great about this movie...
...is that it's proof that any of us can make a film that will not be any worse than this one. The only thing good about this movie is the pyrotechnics.
So go out there & make your video creations & whenever you start to doubt yourself or worry about the script or the acting just remember you'll never do worse than this "film".
Happy filming.
R.I.P.D. (2013)
Come On Man
I thought it was hilarious. I don't know why people are so busy ripping R. I. P. D. Did they try to take the movie seriously? I thought Bridges' old cowboy up tone was perfect, considering the time frame he was from. So I don't know why people are getting all pissy about. I did think Bacon's monster reveal was disappointing.
Cosmic Sin (2021)
Cosmic Disappointment
Wow. Similar to what someone else said, I don't know if the Cosmic Sin is making the movie or watching it. And what's Bruce Willis doing? Did he not manage his finances well? Why doesn't he retire & travel the world? It's so painful to watch. To see one of your favorite action heroes die a slow death.
We've achieved quantum leap travel, but no advancement in handheld weaponry? Our on suit computer can't navigate a safe flight path?
Here's my analogy. Load a shotgun shell w/ lighting, special effects, dialog, etc. Then fire. The scattered pattern represents the movie.
Is it ironic that this "parasite" comes in black goo, which is also represented in another Bruce Willis bomb, "Breach"? At least Breach was more coherent.
Breach (2020)
Yippee-ki-yay...
Anyone curious why a maga-star would be in this kind of sci-fi? Thomas Jane might not be a household name, but he's gotten around a good bit. It's not unusual to see him in sci-fi movies or shows, but Bruce?
I don't know. Sometimes it seems like people who make a lot of money don't know how to manage it well & people who don't make a lot of money do.
Go figure.
Jupiter's Legacy (2021)
Like a shooting star
Like a shooting star the show was burning bright for seven episodes. Then the shooting star quickly flickered out w/ the 8th episode.
Making the uncle/brother a psychopath in the last episode was just f-up. Maybe if they had started hinting to the audience (in prior episodes) that the brother was leaning evil the last episode would have been easier to stomach. But since that didn't happen there's this strong bond of family (dysfunctional, yes, but still family) roughing it out together. As the Mafia always say, "you don't f w/ family".
It was too soon a transition. It's like in Star Wars episode 3, where Anakin so quickly gave himself to the dark side. Watching Tartakovsky's two Star Wars animated movies (prior to Episode 3) helps make the Anakin/Vader transition easier.
Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
Action Movie
Yes it's usually near impossible to make sequels that are better than originals, so if you go into it looking for a meaningful connection between past & present movies you'll probably be disappointed. However, if you can let past comparisons go, you might enjoy a decent action flick.
I thought the augmented soldier thing was really interesting. It's embarrassing, but nice to see the original players. If Linda Hamilton could grow a beard she might look better. Wow. She didn't age well.
If you're offended b/c white males played the original hero, the Arnold Terminator, the Robert Patrick T-1000 Terminator & so on, then you'll enjoy this movie b/c white has been replaced w/ Hispanic & male has been replaced w/ female.
Politics aside, it was a jolly good action movie. Although I thought seeing the young John Conner get blown away w/ a shotgun was a bit disturbing.
Time Trap (2017)
Cool
Don't understand all that hate towards the movie.
Always refreshing to find an independent film that's good.
Quick character build, intriguing story line, interesting ending.
I love finding no-name flicks done well on small budget.
Message Man (2018)
Message Received
What can I say? I like this stuff. Sure, sure, it's nothing new; assassin wants to retire, but his violent past won't let him, yada, yada... At least this guy embraces who he is instead of whining about it. Of course it's always nice when the people he's killing are disgusting bad guys.
Let's be clear, though. When you're bleeding, stop & apply basic 1st aid. There's no harm in that & it makes the story more believable. Next, when you hire an assassin to watch your back, it's probably best to keep him on your payroll 'til the end & not rely on his kindheartedness to help you further.
All-in-all it's immediate justice that we want to see b/c it can only be found in make believe stories. Reality justice is slow, taxing, costly & often times bleeds out b/4 exacting itself.
That's why we keep coming back for more.
The Gateway (2018)
Which World Is Mine?
I'm writing to you from my own parallel world. Don't try to come here b/c once you leave your own world you can never return. It's just endless jumps from one world to the next & never back to the one b/4.
Once you put aside the complete scientific impossibility, you're in for quite an adventure. Yin-Yang, push & push back, everything has consequences or cause & affect. As a scientist, Jane's choice is quite irrational, but it makes for good story telling. Suspenseful & thrilling.
So what's your current situation? Are you in a dark place, desperate enough to make an irrational decision like Jane? What would you do?
Beyond the Sky (2018)
Memory Lapses
I can't remember what I watched. There seems to be gaps in my memory when I try to recollect.
I thought it was a pretty good flick. When I read the description I was zzzzzzz, but then I watched the trailer & thought, okay maybe there's something here (if only I could remember what it was). The story, acting, special affects all blended well for me.
So, the dude they hit while driving should've bled out from the loss of blood we were shown, but okay. The biggest disappointment for me was never explaining the WHY. Emily's burning question as well. Why was butthead Bill abducting people in the first place? Was it really something cheap like 'just for tourism', or was there something more?
Oh well. I still enjoyed the movie.
Far Cry (2008)
Why So Serious?
So if you're of the mindset that this movie is going to be kick ass like the game then you'll be sorely disappointed. However, if you watch it as a comedy then it'll be more entertaining.
Wake of Death (2004)
Ahhhhhh.....vengeance.
Yea it's dark, but you can't have revenge w/o darkness. VD (Van Damme) just seems more matured in his later years. Anyway, never really understood the success of Lisa King, aside from her physical appearance, in movies. Damme handles the darkness well. Thought there'd be a better showdown in the end. And what about a Tony Schiena? He's actually the real bad ass. Look him up. If you like the body trail of vengeance you'll like this movie.
Rampage (2018)
Cute & Cudley
The opening scene is pretty good. The mutating monsters seems far fetched, but okay. The FBI cowboy? The Army Commander that's ready to drop MOABs so quickly? In a populated area? Dinosaur crock climbing straight up a building? In the end it's all warm & fuzzy. This makes for a good chick flick.
The 15:17 to Paris (2018)
Slow Burn
What can you say about a story of real life heroes? I'm glad the story was told & the heroes celebrated. Now, for the ugly part. The real life heroes are not real life actors. I'm afraid this is painfully so. The movie takes so long to get to the "action". The heroic events. It's painful. Then when the action arrives on screen it feels flat. The French President's speech is pretty good.
Upgrade (2018)
Good Find
Not at all what you might expect. Kind of along the lines of Ex-Machina. Expecting low budget, mediocre film, but the story is well written & the acting well executed. Like I said, a good find. Enjoy!
Venom (2018)
Stomach The Politics
Movies like Star Wars & Peter Jackson's Lord Of The Rings are just two examples that it is possible to tell a good story w/o nauseating the audience with political agendas. So, if you can stomach the early on political statements the movie is pretty good.
If you've ever played the video game "Prototype" you'll notice the shape shifting similarities.
Darc (2018)
True To It's Name
Darc was dark, but still a good flick.
If you love martial arts, gore, justice & revenge you'll love this movie.
👍👍
Death Wish (2018)
I'm down w/ it despite the nay-sayers
Good vengence flick. It's something where many people wish they could, but know they shouldn't. So if Willis is the Grim Reaper does that make the bowling ball the Guardian Angel? The trivia about the brake fluid is wild. The only thing that would've made this movie better is if Willis' character kicked the soccer dad in the nuts.
Annihilation (2018)
Thumbs down (SPOILER ALERT)
The movie is ant-Christian, but that shouldn't be a surprise. It's just that movies are better when they avoid religion, politics & sex. Anyway, the movie does well w/ suspense & creepiness. The affair was pointless. It detracted from the story. It was also militarily offensive. Having served in the military myself, as an 11B, the tactics were annoyingly wrong. When the physicist gets sucked into the cabin, Portman's first response is to leave her weapon & run after physicist? It's been established they're in a hostile environment so all weapons should be at "Low Ready" at the very least, at all times. Never go anywhere w/o a Battle Buddy at all times. They sleep in a tower but keep watch on the ground? A phosphorus grenade is all it took to destroy this alien technology? The ending was week. To may questions. The visual affects were mesmerizing, bu I can't help but think 2001 Space Odyssey.
