The Son (2002)

subtle
15 August 2007
Have you ever read a short story which seemed deprived of action but nevertheless had a profound effect on you?

"Le fils" is reminiscent of this experience. A subtle, slow-paced work of art filmed with a hand-held camera predominantly pursuing the main character whose body language is as informative as scarce amount of words uttered throughout the movie.

This seemingly simple film might be unjustly dismissed as dull but it is rewarding for those who are patient enough and bother to look beyond the surface.

"Le fils" intentionally lacks any musical embellishment. Instead, it relies on sounds that surround us on an everyday basis emphasizing a mundane reality. No wonder Dardenne brothers' path through the movie industry was effectively set out by a documentary.

Happy End (2003)

disaster
30 January 2005
It's quite unfortunate that some artists who are perfectly cast in the movie that brings them fame end up being victims of that particular memorable performance. That is, they are identified with one single character which casts a shadow over their remaining career. Great artists manage to overcome this barrier, whereas artists who are limited in characters they could effectively portray move the wrong way. Downwards. Self-destructing themselves. Audrey Tautou belongs to the latter category. She gave it all to Amelie Poulain. And even though the movies that followed "Amelie" were not bad, excitement that surrounded her eventually declined. Before being re-cast by Jean-Pierre Jeunet in "A Very Long Engagement", where Tautou portrays a dry variation of our beloved Amelie Poulain, Tautou chose to take part in a disaster called "Nowhere to Go But Up". Basically, the movie behind this review. "Nowhere to Go But Up", I dare say, is prosaic characterized by a banal script and disastrous acting. Nevertheless, it's somewhat hard to say which is worse, the tasteless movie itself or Audrey Tautou who explicitly demonstrates her numerous shortcomings as an actress.

Energetic
10 December 2004
A typical energetic work from Emir Kusturica who allures us into his bizarre world inhabited with eccentric and weird human beings. Characters as they are exposed to us seem quite unnatural but as the movie gradually absorbs one gets used to and cares about them. Kusturica harmoniously blends comedy with drama and the result is an enjoyable and entertaining movie despite being built on a dramatic theme. The landscapes in the movie are breathtaking and an offbeat music has always been an integral part in Kusturica's works. Some elements might seem repetitive from his previous movies but I would rather infer those elements as a stamp of a genius. The only thing that almost spoils a delightful experience is an actress portraying Luca's wife. I could not swallow her annoying grimaces no matter how hard I tried. Her scenes apart, the movie is a pleasure to watch.

21 Grams (2003)
Absorbing
13 August 2004
There is such a strong resemblance between "21 Grams" and "Amores Perros" that one is left wondering whether Alejandro Gonzales Iñárritu is cunningly hanging on the technique that presumably works. As the movie paves its way to end prejudged assumptions are proven wrong. It seems that the movie itself opted for disjointed yet masterly editing. While "Memento" and "Irreversible" impressed as they moved backwards, "21 Grams" absorbs as it randomly moves back and forth like a neglected leaf where the wind commands. Actively involved viewer is left to glue those pieces together to form a mosaic. This emotionally tormenting drama intensified by the top-notch performances from an outstanding cast is worth to dive into. If only the title were modest.

Young Adam (2003)
Depressing
5 August 2004
Warning: Spoilers
(might include spoilers)

A tedious, slow-paced drama that even trustworthy solid performances from the leads can not save from drowning. "Young Adam" mingles with reality but consequently bores with its dullness. It is predominated by explicit intimate scenes which speak volumes for the characters involved but unfortunately also drag and exhaust. A man struggling with conscience is not appealing either. Dostoevsky's Raskolnikov eloquently suffered for 542 pages before he eventually turned himself in. What must be noted though are the flashbacks, through which past events unfold and some early scenes seal the meaning they were deprived of initially. Basically, flashbacks are what keeps one involved in the movie, which tries hard but ends up being a depressing study of human nature.

Pinocchio (2002)
Distinct
29 July 2004
There has been a lot of fuss going on about adult Roberto Benigni playing a role of a child. Much ado about nothing that results in missing out on some fine sides of this pleasant motion picture. It is quite reasonable that for some it is disturbing to see a middle-aged man, dressed like a clown, behave like a mischievous child; However, the energy Benigni spreads out while he is present on screen should be nonetheless acknowledged. We should at least credit him for creating something distinct. Back in 1940, Disney released their animation classic - "Pinocchio", the perfection of which could not possibly be surpassed. It would have been banal if Benigni's role had been handed over to a child. "Pinocchio" exhibits colorful costumes, elaborate sets and beautiful cinematography. One external circumstance ruthlessly keeps this movie away from success, though. It is unfortunate to be released just after an extensively successful "Life is Beautiful". The expectations are way too high and "Pinocchio" eventually fails to satisfy.

The Return (2003)
Unforgettable
27 July 2004
Warning: Spoilers
(might include spoilers)

A purely sincere contemplation of an emotional reunion of a stern father and his two teenage sons. Father-Son relationship all of us can easily identify with or relate to. "The Return" is a masterfully filmed, perfectly structured hell of a movie. On the surface we have conflicting personalities of a trio clashing, as we witness their larger than life journey through a magnifying glass. As we broaden the horizons, haunting religious themes and images emerge. Single out a scene which depicts Ivan and Andrey gazing at their sleeping father, who does not just resemble Mantegna's "Dead Christ", what I initially presumed, but is in fact its vivid materialization on screen. Thus, a parallel with Jesus is drawn. But what does this violent man has to do with Jesus? Does he sacrifice himself in order to develop the masculinity, independence, and other valuable character traits of his children or is he nothing but a freaked out tyrant? "The Return" does not indeed answer some questions but instead throws them at us to consider and analyze. Entirely acceptable with me, if you please. What is hidden in the mysterious box? Why did father leave the family and why did he suddenly reappear? Those points are of minor importance. Answers to those questions would have generated more questions and apparently interfered with an exquisite flow of an artistic movie. "The Return" is a captivating work of art which culminates with an array of engaging snapshots, occupying a throne of all time classics as soon as the end credits start to roll.

Night Watch (2004)

Worthy contribution
23 July 2004
With Timur Bekmambetov at the helm and with a little help from Russia's First Channel a long-awaited "Night Patrol" appeared before a Science Fiction hungry moviegoers. The dinner was served. The prologue of the movie impressed with its massive cinematography, the plot was equally engrossing and entertaining enough to keep ones eyes focused on the screen but some mediocre scenes were painfully hard to digest. Ironically, the movie fell victim to its own massiveness hinted at the beginning. It demonstrated its capabilities but struggled to keep up throughout the movie. I refrain from labeling "Night Patrol" as a highlight of Russian cinema for the following reasons: Russia, or should I say, Soviet cinema has embraced and excelled in various genres be it a tragicomedy, comedy, drama or an adaptation of a work of literature. One sparkling drop should not overshadow what went before. The movie has left rather good impression but it's important to acknowledge that it contributed more to an evolution of this particular genre in Russia rather than to the Russian cinema in general.

Ingenious
17 July 2004
Minds of few ingenious men converge to produce a work of utmost quality. "The Triplets of Belleville" is without doubt one of the most creative animated features to date. It is both weird and realistic. Weird for it's unique, surrealistic characters. You have plenty of them to choose from: gangsters with rectangular shoulders, obese inhabitants of Belleville, with an awkwardly walking French waiter apparently stealing the show. Realistic for it's genuinely portrayed relationship between grandma and her grandson (to say nothing of the dog). Characters that you instantly sympathize with. The plain story is accompanied by strikingly original music; However, the simplicity of the plot is misleading. If you are not attentive enough some details might go unnoticed. In spite of the fact that some of those details are quite subordinate to the plot they are a worthy gift to an attentive viewer. Things are not spelled out and as a matter of fact the movie is dialogue free what makes it universal destroying the annoying barriers of dubbing. In essence, why use words when facial expressions deliver messages that no words could possibly convey. The animated feature may not be exactly suitable for children and exaggerated caricatures might be offensive to some but the only scene that falls short to the rest, in my humble opinion, is somewhat extended car chase scene which nevertheless does not at all spoil the overall delightful impression of an inimitable masterpiece.

Big Fish (2003)
Impressive
6 July 2004
Imaginative Tim Burton has created yet one more visually attractive flick. After a disappointing "Planet of the Apes" it basically restores Burton as a master at crafting fairy tales which deliver strong poignant messages about life, skillfully blend fantasy with reality and on the top of that are absolutely hilarious. In spite of that, "Big Fish" with its sublime story and stunning cinematography is far from being a masterpiece. Its shortcomings mainly originate from uninteresting flat characters (especially the ones from Senior Edward's tall tales) which struggle to carry the movie along. If you want to see Burton's fantasy classic, rent "Edward Scissorhands". If you want to see Burton at his best, get your hands at "Ed Wood". However, if you are a devoted Burton fan "Big Fish" is a must see.

Bad Company (2002)
Quite Entertaining
17 June 2003
Warning: Spoilers
(Includes spoilers)

I never did admire Chris Rock's acting capabilities so I approached this movie in a rather prejudgemental fashion. Nevertheless, this definite draw back did not prevent me from liking it. "Bad Company" moves smoothly and is entertaining enough due to its constant use of humour and comic situations characters are put into. (though, humorous remarks seemed to be overdone in some scenes). Cinematography and music deserve the separate mention. And not to the lesser extent, Anthony Hopkins, who is remarkable as usual. But, why? Why the bomb's timer (or whatever it is called) has to be stopped when there is only one or two seconds remaining before everyone is blown to pieces? And why a director like Joel Schumacher has to opt for a such ridiculous, irrational unwritten Hollywood rule is beyond my comprehension. If you are ready to face and overlook the above mentioned minor flaws of the movie you will most likely enjoy its company.

In the closet
4 September 2002
A very controversial film. Some scenes go beyond accepted norms. Think twice before you watch this movie if you are a hyper-sensitive one. I consider some scenes way too exaggerated. Nevertheless, the acting is superb and the director famous for his innovative ideas. The movie's final scene draws an analogy to twentieth century music with a dissonant ending.

Basically, check it out, at least just to debate about it.

Exceptionally amusing picture with a splendid cast.
2 September 2002
Exceptionally amusing picture with a splendid cast. The plot skillfully tangled and requires attentive monitoring. Jeff Bridges is outstanding in portraying a pitiful bum. John Goodman is tragicomical with his references to Vietnam. Supporting actors are equally impressive. Credit to the director for his imaginative touches. Highly recommended. Entertainment is guaranteed.

Disappointment
15 August 2002
A dull adaptation of a worthless book. Lacks any interest whatsoever. Amateur acting, impersonal characters, nothing harmonious between animation and reality. Don't be fooled by Disney trademark, one of the worst ever made. Plot, primitive and annoying. Humor, insensible and never to the point. Waste of time for those who created it and especially for those who bother to watch it.
