Jack Ryan (2018)
A major departure from original Jack Ryan
I am not an American, nor am I from Venezuela or Middle East. Yet I have found these series (especially season 2) rather bad.
I started Jack Ryan with Patriot Games! What a delight it was. Subsequently I have seen Clear and Present Danger again with Harrison Ford, than Alec Baldwin's take on the character (only to realize it predates Harrison Ford), followed by Ben Affleck's portrayal. I even liked the Chris Pine version which was inferior to all others in all measures. Jack Ryan was a lovable character: smart, somewhat of a stuck-up, always proper, and so on so forth. The catch phrase "I am just an analyst" was so fitting to all these guys.
Imagine when I have heard about TV Series. I jumped right into it.
I agree with most of the other critics in the sense that first was better than second (by a mile).
But I really didn't like the character. And it is not on Krasinski. The new character is a self-righteous, pompous, almost bigot character. I fully understand that the show needs to be all about America brings prosperity, freedom, democracy, etc. to bad guys. But the way Jack Ryan acts is completely out of context. He personally threatens the president of Venezuela, US chief of station and Jack single-handedly captures all the bad guys (well it is the take of the series. the guard on the presidential palace are bad. No question about it.
What happened to Ben Affleck's Jack who actually understand the nuances of the Russian presidents speech and makes everyone understand what he truly means.
This new Jack, grinds his teeth from the back seat of the car to the driver just because he believes he is not a good guy! He squeezes the arm of Venezuelan guard to deduct he is the killer, He threatens the president. And at all times he is so sure he is the good guy.
The hero that was created in so many movies are shattered into pieces. No go for me.
Intelligence (2020)
Could have been better but still a good show to watch for
First of all, I've started because of Schwimmer. After Friends, I can feel obliged to at least give it a try for any of cast members new projects. Glad that I did.
In one of the interviews, I recall David Schwimmer was no longer fond of playing neurotic characters. I remember I thought to myself "what a waste! he does that stuff great". Alas.
In this show, he plays a goofy character who is not aware how off he is. And that role suits him greatly. I remember the scene in Episode 1 where he occupies the whole moving sidewalk in the airport without a care for all behind him. Hllarious.
Nick Mohammed, who apparently is the brains behind the shows is purely adorable. The premise is great. Some of the characters could have been cast better. But David, Nick, and lady who plays the supervisor on the NHCQ are pure perfection.
I think this last point made me rate 8 rather than higher. The chemistry between characters are not there fully. I hope there will be a continuation. Else I will look for other stuff from Nick.
The Chef Show (2019)
Mixed feelings
From the get go I need to tell you that I loved the movie; In fact I probably watched 3 times with different people.
In one of the earlier shows Jon Favreau says they don't know what the show is about. That's spot-on. Unfortunately I don't think they end up knowing what the show is about till the end. And nothing is wrong with it. It's just that my mind is looking for a theme in each episode and just can't find it.
I loved Jon Favreau in this show. He is really down-to-earth, he always takes the backstage, and asks (at least to me) really good questions. I wish I was a guest in his house.
For Roy Choi, I have different feelings. I felt he had a chip on his shoulder and was trying too much to assert himself. Obviously he is a good chef, but his interjections (especially with Jon) are so minuscule that I was wondering whyyyyy? Anyways that is the way it is.
Did I learn anything new? no
Was it entertaining? mildly
Did I learn new techniques, recipes, etc.? no
I finished it till the end but am not looking for new episodes.
Kidnapping Mr. Heineken (2015)
Bad but watchable movie.
Shame on the casting director for casting Jim Sturgess. He is one of the flattest actors of all times. Except for 21 he has not contributed to any movie he was in. In this movie he is on one of the leading roles and his acting is so poor that you can write your mail, play candy crush while watching the movie.
If it were not for Sir Anthony Hopkins, there'd be nothing to look forward in this movie.
The Ranch (2016)
Two different shows: one with, and one without Danny Masterson
I loved the show from part 1 through part 5. Last episode of part 5 Danny's character Rooster disappears. Netflix released part 6 recently. I watched (or I was able to watch) only one episode to realize the show went seriously downhill without Rooster.
The dialogues were so bad that I went to IMDB to see whether Danny Masterson was one of the writers earlier on (no he wasn't). But I reckon he had a lot of input in the process. Because similar dialogues didn't really resonate this time. It was like forced. The banter between Beau and Colt, or the one between Beau and her girlfriend was so awkward that I had to cover my ears few times.
Congrats! you ruined a perfect show and a great actor with allegations.
Sense8 (2015)
It comes across more of openness manifest than a sci-fi
I have read most of reviews in this platform. Some people said that it's a great show, some said it has described the characters fully.
I disagree. This was a complete waste of my time now that I have finished 2 seasons.
- Extremely slow. The season 1 did basically focused on individual stories but I didn't get the sense of depth into any character. It remained superficial regardless of time screened. I would say the slowness is akin to day time soap operas where the scenes and conversations just take longer.
- Too much sex. In both season, there are prolonged sex scenes, most of them having a homosexual tendency. At first I enjoyed having the voice of LGBT community to raise. But after 2 seasons, it became almost boring. And each of them - you guessed it - very very slow.
- No real plot. I reckon the evil plot was there but it was so much coated with other stuff. At the end I couldn't focus on the plot. And I think I can explain the whole show to someone who asks me.
- Did I mention too much sex
Just don't waste your time.
Office Christmas Party (2016)
Lightweight yet excellent laugh movie
I decided to see this movie despite ~6 IMDb rating. The trailer was so funny that I couldn't risk not seeing this one. And glad I did.
I went to see this film with zero expectations and I laughed like crazy. Having read some of the other reviews, I fail to understand how they couldn't see stupid, silly humor in this movie.
The cast nor the movie are trying to be serious, message oriented, or Oscar-winning performance. They just try to make you laugh with a plot so silly that it can't be real and they nail it. Jennifer Aniston is playing driven CEO with hard nosed attitude and she nails it. Bateman is in one of typical Bateman roles. He is nice but with tendencies to try new things. And having played exactly same role in every movie he ever played in he nails it. TJ Miller is playing more normal person compared to what I was expecting. Yet he is still the most out-of-ordinary person in the whole set of characters.
I personally really liked Kate in this movie. She keeps her extremely composed face throughout the whole movie and she is just hilarious.
The pimp, the side characters all play a great deal in this movie.
I wouldn't trust other nay-sayers and would certainly give it a shot.
