So-so *I don't think it's as bad as some people make it to be*

Overall, it's a decent movie. Could have stood more action, more texture. It becomes a little boring after the endless cuts between three different settings where each new shot is quite similar to the last one in the respective setting. But, the dialouge between Redford and the student is interesting. Lots of people are saying its "patronizing"...I didn't really feel that. Apparently that would make me stupid according to some that have commented on this film. But, I didn't really feel that was the intent, feel of it. It's more of a "set back and look at YOUR life and ask yourself if you're really doing all you could be" type of film. I only give it six stars because of the ending and because I feel the film lacks enough texture and becomes a little dry throughout.

Overrated

This film is great in it's artistry, cinematography...but WAY overrated. Very cliché plot. The acting is good though, the best I've personally seen from Wayans. But aside from simply being very disturbing, which was an obvious desire of the director, it's just kinda boring. Lots of drug usage scenes. Get's pretty old. Im sure that was a desired effect so they could show how deeply they were getting into their usage, but after awhile its just like "ok...here we go again. Borrrring." Feels stale after like...the 3rd, 4th, 5th time. And it occurs a LOT more than that. A fairly typical ending. May be very disorienting to watch for some. Good film but definitely overrated.

Good, not great.

I had high expectations for this film. During exposition, I really thought I'd love it. I loved Charlie's quirkiness. But the movie had a hard time holding my attention, or rather, keeping me very interested, after about halfway through. Part of the movie's charm is it's subtly, yes. But at times if seems to drag too much, even though it's not trying to achieve the same effect that a fast moving, steady building film does. It just feels like it kind of stalls out at times. As charming as Charlie is with his insecurities, at times it can become slightly old. Also, near the climactic ending scene in the swamp, the outcome is a bit stupid and unfulfilling in my opinion. Even though I've complained a lot, overall, this film is much smarter than your average. The cinematography is nice. Acting is good, especially from Cage. It just may be a bit boring for some, even those who prefer subtle, nuanced movies. Worth a view though, for sure.
