Frances Ha (2012)
First World Problems of Frances
Devoid of character development and meaningful conflict, I held out hopes for a redeemable plot thread... one that showed that hard work might right Frances' aimless wandering, or that time spent around the values of older family might shed light on her own nonsensical privileged existence, but it never happened. Even the eventual acceptance and accomplishment came for her as though there really was no effort, nothing to be lost or gained, and was just another blip on the radar of a meandering trajectory. Obviously the film poked fun at people like this, but it wasn't a comedy. It played out like an ironic indie drama with no heart; like a bad homage to Clerks, for hipsters that won't understand they are being made fun of while they watch a pointless movie.
MacGyver (2016)
Not nearly as bad as the rating suggests
I get why people are bashing the series in the ratings if the only thing they would be happy with is a carbon copy of the original. In those reviews I read some good points; things about the original that aren't in the new version. However, I'm enjoying the new show, and think that some of the comments here are colored by the disappointment that everything is not the same as it was. The writing is good, action is good, and most of the on-the-fly hacks are amusing if not realistic. At first I was excited that the show was coming back, but then I almost didn't watch it after reading reviews here. Overall I'm glad I did because it's a fun show. If you like Hawaii Five-0 or the new Lethal Weapon, I would give this new version a shot.
America the Beautiful (2007)
Thought Provoking
As a previous reviewer stated, this is not a polished gem. It does jump frequently from one sub-topic to another, but the beauty thread is always there. Personally, the breadth of the film didn't bother me. I think an in depth feature on one aspect of our perception of beauty would be boring. There are many points made in this film that are very interesting; things that I hadn't thought about before. It's easy to say things like "Models are model(s) because they are beautiful, that is their job and there is nothing wrong with that" and more difficult to see that often the requirements for a model's dimensions are unhealthy standards, which many women strive to achieve. I think the audience that could benefit the most from the message of this film is the teenage girl, but it's a good film for the parents of those girls as well, so that they may have more awareness to guide their children.
The Darjeeling Limited (2007)
love it or hate it
i think most people will love or hate this film, but i did not. wes goes big for emotion and style. some of his films are more rich with character and plot than others, and this one is at the lower end of that spectrum. if you want to see a movie that makes you feel something, through deliberate visual manipulation, than this is a good pick. color and composition take the forefront here. i just wish that there were more substance behind it this time around. this new 10 line minimum for comments is b.s... god forbid we say what we mean tersely. what's the problem with getting to the point? i havrn't run into a more ridiculous problem in a while. oh well, block me, oh gods of IMDb if you deem this as padding!
