The Boy (2016)
Excellent for spooky, eerie atmosphere
I liked this movie very much. I don't like horror movies, but I do like the occasional spooky movie and this one was definitely spooky. There aren't many movies that are scary without being gory, but this one fit that bill.
The interior house setting was magnificent. Lauren Cohan and Rupert Evans were both likable and believable in their parts. The premise of the movie was unusual and surprising, yet it worked. The script kept me guessing.
If you like a bit of mystery, atmosphere and an eerie storyline, you might like this as well. I would recommend it for those reasons, but don't watch it alone, or right before bed.
Prescription for Love (2019)
So bad it's infuriating
Is it possible for a movie to be so bad it makes you angry? Turns out, yes. Yes it is possible! What a steaming pile of garbage this was. From the hackneyed 'constant misunderstandings' trope to the dull as dishwater (or dtichwater - take your pick) doctor, this was so trite and tedious, it's almost beyond description. Not only did the main male character have zero personality, he was beyond stupid as well. The actor seemed completely bored and it's no wonder, considering the character he was playing.
Every inch of this movie was pathetic. Unless you're a masochist, I suggest you give it a HARD pass.
Badehotellet (2013)
Wow. I can't believe how much I love this show
I have never cared for dramas, so wasn't interested in this show when it was first advertised on Prime. Eventually I gave it a try and I'm so glad I did. It's now one of my all-time favorites and I have watched the entire series 4 times. I am eagerly awaiting the tenth and final season.
This show manages to perfectly blend and balance the old, tried and true characters with fresh, new characters each season. People come and go, but the story is always interesting and always moving forward. Each character is perfectly cast and all the actors do an excellent job. My two favorite characters have to be Mr. Weyse, played by Jens Jacob Tychsen and Edith, played by Ulla Vejby.
Mr. Weyse is a famous actor and Mr. Tychsen plays the part to perfection. Mr. Weyse is always dressed to the nines and it's fun to see a man looking so dapper. As an actor, he is typically full of himself and does and says the funniest things. His facial expressions are hilarious. You can't help but love him, despite his vanity. And "little Edith' is played perfectly by Ulla Vegby. She is a humble maid, satisfied with her role in life. A little nosy, a little gossipy and a true romantic. She is loyal and sweet and it's enjoyable to see her progression through the years.
I have to confess that as a POC I have recommended this to many of my other friends of color. Every one of them has said, Why do you want to watch a show with a bunch of white people? That doesn't matter to me. I just want to watch a GOOD show, no matter what color or nationality the characters are. And this IS a good show. A very good show.
If you stick with it, you will probably love it as much as I do. Get through the first few episodes and things will start to jell and you'll be in for a great ride. Enjoy!
Snowed-Inn Christmas (2017)
I didn't expect to like this so much!
Very, very cute and cozy Christmas movie. Andrew Walker and Bethany Joy Lenz were both great in this movie. They are both excellent actors and played their parts well. She was believable as the uptight (or, organized, as she describes herself) female and he was believable as the fly-by-the-seat-of-his-pants, guy. The chemistry between them grew, just as you'd expect in a real relationship.
The Christmasy Inn where they stayed, and the cute older couple who ran it were nice backdrops. My only gripe is that as a POC myself, I hated seeing the token black guy in the white family. Why, Why, WHY do filmakers think it's necessary to do that? I can assure you, it's not. In fact, I hate the pandering. What is it with white film makers that they think they have to be the great white saviors of the world and make everything about DEI? Do they think it's impossible for POC to watch an all-white family in a movie? Like we can't relate? We can't use our imaginations and put our own families into those scenarios? Whatever. It didn't completely ruin the movie for me, but the guy stood out like the proverbial sore thumb and it did take it down a notch. It just wasn't believable.
Otherwise, a very enjoyable movie. I recommend it.
After Hours (2015)
One of my favorites!
I stumbled on this little gem and it has turned out to be one of my go-to shows for repeat viewings. I only wish there had been more episodes! It's just a sweet story about family and friends who love and support each other, with lots of interesting (new to me) music.
Willow is graduating and needs to find work. His dad has been laid off as a milkman and mom is worried about the bills. Willow finds solace listening to an independent radio show hosted by Ollie and Lauren. One day, Willow stumbles on Lauren unexpectedly (he recognizes her voice) and she learns that he is a techie. Just what she needs.
Aside from Ardal O'Hanlon, (who I love, but who has a somewhat minor role) every single actor in this show was unfamiliar to me. They were all great though, and perfect for their parts. They were truly an ensemble cast, and very believable in their roles.
My absolute favorite was Ollie, played by. Rob Kendrick. He was adorable and masterfully portrayed. From the devious little giggle before he meets Willow for the first time, to his enthusiastic, "Mm, it's not!" when asked if his job as a copywriter is exciting, every single line, every facial expression, every movement was perfect. Rob doesn't seem to have done much film work since, but that can't be from lack of talent, that's for sure. I would love to see him in other roles and I hope someone is paying attention and casts him!
I also really liked the character of Chris, portrayed by. Fergus Van Gelder. As far as I can tell from his imdb bio, After Hours is the only film work he's done. WHY??!! He was a natural in his role as Willow's mate. WHY he and Kendrick aren't lighting up our screens in one production after another, I don't know. They both stole the show for me.
If you just want an easygoing show with fun, sweet characters who aren't trying to kill or undermine each other, that has some laughs and some good music, not to mention nice scenery, then I highly suggest you give it a try. Cheers.
