Conquest (1983)
So Bad......It's Somewhat Good
Alright. So every movie collector out there has a few "flops" in their movie collection for whatever the reason. I have this movie in my collection. I have seen the DVD version and picture quality is really bad. Well, the remastered Blu-Ray version I have is not much better on the eyes either for picture quality. It is as if the movie was filmed with a haze filter of some sort. Now....why do I own this movie? It is so bad....it is super funny good. One of those movies where you feel like it is the dumbest movie you've ever seen and you can't help but laugh real hard and can't wait to see what stupid scene comes next. This is why I own this movie. What's the saying, "It's not so bad after you get a few beers in ya". Strange nudity, strange fantasy, strange story, strange characters, strange weapons, strange everything! That is this movie. Oh and just be prepared to squint a lot because the picture clarity is so bad. So if you want a movie to watch for dumb movie night and you can't find a copy of that old corny movie you really wanted to watch.......well find yourself a copy of Conquest and have at it. You will lose some brain cells but I feel it is worth it. 5 stars only because it is so bad it is amusing.
Blazing Saddles (1974)
One Of My Favorite Mel Brooks Movies
It is really hard to write a review about this movie. Comedy these days is under question so much, but....if you have an open mind, and can put your mind back into the comedy that was the 70's, 80's, and 90's then you might actually get a kick out of this movie. It is a very different approach to comedy, considering I haven't seen hardly any other Mel Brooks movies that are like this. It is definitely a stand alone, I think, as far as Mel Brooks movies go. It is very good though. If you understand the difference between then and now, comedy wise, then I think it makes it easier to get into the movie and laugh at the jokes. I liked it when I was young, and I like it now. I think it is because I can distinguish the difference between what is okay and not okay. My age, the timeframe, when I grew up......I think that all plays into why this type of comedy never phased me and I just laughed and enjoyed it for what it was, comedy, a movie. The difference between a silly movie, and real life.....I understood that real life is NOT like that and this was just a movie. This movie will always be a good classic for me. Enjoy!
Airplane! (1980)
I Absolutely Love This Movie!
So the first thing I wanna say is that slapstick comedy was very different when this movie was made then it is now. What I mean by that is that it was funny. Comedy back then was understood as that.... Comedy. Nobody was getting offended by this or that and so on. Comedy had a great place in the world back then. When I watch it even today I laugh so much. Now the rating is interesting as well. You will never see a PG movie like this now-a-days. It would be rated at least a PG-13. The one liners in this are so good. The writers with this movie were on it. It doesn't lose any funny splendor from start to finish. You know how some comedies start out strong and then fizzle out later on.........well not this one. It is fun to see some real comedy greats in this movie too. Keep an open mind about the jokes. Remember when it was made. Enjoy!
Predator (1987)
The Predator....Right Up There With Alien
Alright. Growing up, Muscle Men action stars were awesome! Stallone, Arnold, Dolph, Jean-Claude and so many more. I really can't remember what age I was when I saw this movie for the first time but when I did, I thought it was so super cool. Little did I know that this movie would become a major icon in the sci fi genre. These days everybody and their uncle knows what "the predator creature" is. They do. It is iconic. There is nothing like it. It can't be copied, or replicated. It is rock solid in movie history. Just like the xenomorph in Alien. But that is a different story line. Look this movie was so impressionable on me growing up. I wish I could give it 11 stars. They even have Jesse "The Body" Ventura in this movie and Carl Weathers too! It is the ultimate muscle man movie of the 80's. The predator creature is amazing! Its look, concept, and everything else about it is true sci fi all the way. If you have never seen this movie then move the rock you are living under, climb out, and watch this movie! Forget critics, and technical reviews and such. Just watch it. Then you will understand where this whole "predator" and even the "alien" world came from and why so much is based off of this franchise and the "alien" franchise when it comes to sci fi alien based movies. Granted the "alien" timeline is older but still. They co-exist with one another at some point. Long live this movie. Personally I could watch this movie all the time. Even the musical score is awesome. Anyways, watch it. Enjoy!
Event Horizon (1997)
Not Your Average Space Movie
I saw this movie in the theater with my friend and girlfriend, at the time, when this movie came out. We were all excited because we thought we were going to see a cool space movie. We all liked space movies. Well it is a space movie, but it also something else. This movie scared, and creeped us out! It is good. It really is and I feel it is not given enough credit. You know when you are watching a movie and it starts to feel suspenseful? Then on the edge of your seat? Then the Oh My Gosh feelings? This is it. A very good space movie but with a huge twist. When we left the theater and went to Dennys to eat, we couldn't stop talking about it. I remember that night going to bed, I had a few nightmares regarding this movie. So yes it did make a lasting impression on me. If you like space, check. If you wanna jump here and there, check. If you wanna feel suspense and fear, check. A good movie. It deserves my 9 star rating. It does. Enjoy!
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Wow!
I first saw this movie when I picked it up, used, on DVD at a movie store in my late twenties. Yes, they actually had movie stores......for a long time too. Anyways, I got home and got some food and put the movie on and holy moly I was not prepared to see what I saw. This movie really makes you feel a million feelings. It was so good and I was so sucked into it that I hardly ate any of the food I set out for myself. The actors that play the roles in the movie are the perfect match. This is a movie where you have to open up, turn your ears on, and pay attention. This is a serious movie. You will feel things watching this movie. It will make you have questions as well. The most important thing I took from this movie was how the power of good friendship can overcome a lot in life. Even if one starts in the most unusual of places. A very good movie. Watch it. Enjoy!
Dazed and Confused (1993)
I Wish My Town Had A Moon Tower
So, unfortunately, I couldn't see this movie until my senior year in high school. I wasn't old enough when it came out in the theaters or to buy it yet on VHS. How I did get to see it was on VHS at a friends house. He turned 17 before I did by two months. This movie is great! It is funny, and has so many catch phrases. The characters are all very memorable and really do make an impression on you. Every character in it reminded me of certain classmates I had. I can definitely see how this movie is somewhat of a cult movie from the 90's. I really can. It has a rock solid place in my movie collection. I suggest you see it. Have an open mind because if you don't you are gonna be disappointed. Don't criticize it, watch it, let the good times roll and take it in for what it was. Not many movies can depict 70's time period like this one. My folks are pretty cut and dry. I made them watch this and for them they truely could relate to it because they were "In It" during those times. It was cool to see them laugh and enjoy it. They also took many of the characters and compared them to people they knew back then. So just dig it, and watch it. Enjoy.
The Dark Crystal (1982)
10 Stars....A Part Of My Childhood
I rate this movie a 10 because of personal attachment to this movie. My folks bought the VHS copy of this when I was a little kid. I watched it everyday after school after cartoons. I have every line memorized. Just a huge influence on me. It got my imagination going, my love for fantasy, and my love for creating art. It was great. If you are a younger person open up and let the world of Jim Henson and his masterfullness into your heart and mind. Embrace it for what it was. It sure opened the door for stuff today. I feel that if it wasn't for all of Jim Henson's stuff we wouldn't have some things today. It just is a masterpiece in my mind. You won't ever see anything like it again, that is for sure. Look, I am no Pro movie critic. I just love movies and how they make me feel, and how they make an impression on me. A personal experience. I enjoy movies that way. A personal journey. This one got to me. At a wee little age. Take care, and happy movie watching!
