Will Trent (2023)
It Was Okay
I hadn't read the books so the show not being like them was not an issue for me. The show, as far as the writing and the acting, was okay....just okay. The thing that did bother me is the "mash up" of several shows that were really good that was used to make this one. The "detective" is a guy that can look at a crime scene and see what should have been seen by others. In the pilot he says "the footprints are facing the wrong way"; a fact everyone else overlooked - and very Columbo-like. He also carries a lot of baggage and doesn't mesh well with others socially at times. Can you say Monk? Then there is the female police rep that must have studied Queen Latifah on "The Equalizer" to copy both her voice inflections and tone along with several mannerisms (so closely at times that you expected it to be Queen Latifah) for her role. So, if you want to kill an hour, it isn't a bad way to do it but if something else were offered, I'd likely switch the channel.
Definitely, Maybe (2008)
Nice!
Okay....if you want a deep movie, one that gives you pause, makes you think, perhaps causes you to think deeper thoughts, this is NOT the movie. However, if you want an amusing movie that offers a few chuckles, an involved story with decent acting, that not only makes you feel good but has a surprise ending (as opposed to the predictable one), grab your popcorn and settle in to watch. All the actors are believable and the storyline is certainly one everyone can identify with as we look back on dating years and the people that come through our lives. So, if you want to enjoy a light-hearted movie while trying to figure out an ending, check this one out.
The Estate (2022)
One Hour, Thirty-Six Minutes....
....of your life that you will NEVER get back. The language is awful, the story poor, the acting abysmal. We hoped it would get better; never did. Having read a couple of reviews that varied from the ones that panned it altogether, we figured we'd give it a try. Frankly a power outage would have improved our evening. If you cannot find something better to do than watch this movie, you really need to try harder. Life is too short. The best part of this movie is it does NOT last for two hours. The funniest part of this movie is there will be people that read this review and still watch this lousy thing.
Last Holiday (2006)
Every Single Time......
......that I watch this film, I like it all over again! I have seen it dozens of times and, as soon as I see it listed in the guide again, I watch it yet another time. Queen Latifah is a favorite (Heck, I'd watch her in cat food commercials. She is brilliant.) and makes this film. The other actors play their roles well. At some point in life, we are old enough to not want ugly drama, gory effects, childish plots disguised as entertainment. We want a movie that is fun, maybe a bit sappy, with a happy ending that let's us smile as we walk away. This film does just that. Great acting, great story, great lessons taught.
Mr. Holland's Opus (1995)
One Line
Great film! While this movie is one of few that doesn't have a "typical" story line, the entire movie as it impacts on every single person that watches it can be summed up in one line. That one line will always touch the heart. "We are your opus"....and may that realization be with us all that we may remember each of us writes our own opus.
A Gift of Miracles (2015)
A New Twist
A movie with an actual twist to get to the happy ending! It actually held my interest enough fir me to stay up till 11 pm to see the ending. Good job Hallmark!
Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life (2016)
Thank God For Emily
The only episode worth watching was the last one in which you can see how Emily evolved. The first three "movies" were just the set-ups for Lorelei continuing to whine and Rory's learning to whine and acting like a child (more so than when she WAS one). Emily truly was the shining star, the adult that grew with her challenges and forged a new life while cherishing the old.
Cats (2019)
A Waste Of Time
In 1998 they brought the one-and-only (and it SHOULD have been) "Cats" to film. Look it up, watch it and hopefully you'll get this version out of your head. The only thing worse than the singing was the acting. Even Judi Dench couldn't redeem this version. If I hadn't seen it myself I would never have believed it possible to take a great show with great music by a great composer and a previously made great video and destroy it all so completely.
Fly Away Home (1996)
Are You Having A Bad Day?
If you are having a bad day, pull this film out to watch. The photography is beautiful and, as someone having spend childhood in the Adirondacks, moved me to tears just from that. The story was great and grounded in actual studies done on migratory paths. The acting was close to perfect. This is one of those films that leaves you feeling glad you took the time to watch it.
Barn Red (2004)
Great Casting
The person casting this film did a great job bringing to life good, solid characters. This was a believable film but one that also points out an American crisis; the ongoing loss of American farmland at an alarming rate which will eventually impact us all.
Eat Pray Love (2010)
The Food Looked Good
Yes....the food looked good which was the best part if this film. Julia Roberts portrayed a shallow, selfish woman and I really wonder why, when she read the script, she took the role. I have always thought her as better. This movie is about endurance - will the watcher sit through the whole movie or cut their losses and turn it off. It is also about gratitude - thankfully I didn't pay a movie theater, on demand, pay-for-view to watch it. It is a poor variation on Under The Tuscan Sun - which, if you watch this film, you should immediately turn on to get this film out of your mind.
