Boy Kills World (2023)
I hate to compare, but here I am comparing.
Here we are in 2024 with another revenge film. I had just seen Monkey Man over a month ago, a revenge film which I also enjoyed.
Boy Kills World was already on my radar, before watching Monkey Man, but I didn't think I would be in a situation where I would be comparing the two. Until now, after watching Boy Kills World.
Without spoilers, both men go through a similar journey of a traumatic event happening in their childhood. With Monkey Man being more of a drama and Boy Kills World being more of a comedy.
However, I will say Boy Kills World has a more creative narrative structure and stronger choreography than Monkey Man. It also has replay value, I will definitely watch Boy Kills World again, much sooner than revisiting Monkey Man.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024)
I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either
Let me start with the positives.
Like most Guy Ritchie films, the ensemble has great chemistry. Henry Cavill doesn't disappoint, he keeps the pace going and interactions between everyone fun to watch. Alan Ritchson does great as a force of nature, dude is built like a tank. Babs Olusanmokun is slick, he has a very smooth demeanor to his performance. Lastly, Eiza Gonzalez is absolutely beautiful, however her performance was hit or miss for me. But she hit more than she missed.
Now, the negatives.
The movie doesn't feel like it was even made by Guy Ritchie. Instead it feels like someone else were trying to make a "Guy Ritchie" film.
I would watch it again, but it is not in my recommendation list if I were to convince someone to get into Guy Ritchie films.
Monkey Man (2024)
Solid Revenge Film
The pacing of the first two acts in this film moves brilliantly. From the backstory of the Protagonist, which is broken into several segments throughout the film, to the present time, building particular story plots so the audience can understand how all the characters will eventually be connected.
The third act does feel a bit long and there is one fight scene that is still fun to watch but I did feel like it could have been stronger, narratively, to feel like it belonged in the film.
For me, the movie definitely has replay value. However I hope this story ends here. I don't want to see a Monkey Man 2. This movie is great as is and doesn't need unnecessary sequels when the ultimate conflict was settled in this stand alone story.
Stopmotion (2023)
A clever combination film styles, perfect for the horror / thriller genre
A slow burn which didn't bother me, but unfortunately I don't think the general audience (even in horror) would appreciate.
The film does a good job at building the character arc for the leading lady. There are three specific relationships she has with other characters that do have a fitting narrative conclusion. However the overall ending of her story did leave me confused.
The combination of the stop motion into real life was very well done and creepily pleasing to watch. Another thing I really loved about the film was the sound design. I'm not sure how it would immerse someone watching it at home, but in the theater it really amplified the viewing experience for me.
Late Night with the Devil (2023)
Late Night with The Devil is a fun film with a climax that will haunt you for hours after leaving the cinema
There are very few "found footage" movies that I can recommend. Late Night with the Devil is definitely on that list now. The slow burn in the first act of the film plants many seeds that will blossom into a horrifying spectacle later into the film.
The story is unique and original, unlike anything I've seen in a horror film. The well thought out foreshadowing that is captured brilliantly by the cinematographer with deliberate shot choices to help the audience pay attention to specific elements set to be revealed later in the third act of the film.
I only have one problem with the film. However, it doesn't affect the story at all in anyway. The only problem I have with it is the use of AI in for the production of the late night shows graphics. I can't imagine the justification to replace a graphic designer and defend your own creative career to not be replaced by AI.
Other than that, it's a fantastic film and I highly recommend it.
