Twilight (2008)
Had a lot of potential.
First, let me say that yes, I've read all the books and found them to be at least entertaining. Second, this movie wasn't as bas as everyone is saying. That's not to say it was wonderful either. There was a lot of potential - a couple of scenes in this movie were brilliantly executed and I found myself drawn into them. But they were dragged down by other scenes which had some strange editing, unusual and out of place camera angles and music that didn't fit the mood. These don't sound so important, but they were incredibly distracting for me, the viewer. That being said, this movie was entertaining. I found the characters to be the most interesting, and characters, for me and many others I know, make the film. To conclude, it wasn't anything spectacular, but it was still worth the money.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)
I didn't grow up with Dr. Jones
I only watched the previous films a few weeks before the release of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I saw Indy 4 pretty much immediately after. And to me, there is absolutely no difference between the first three and the fourth. I found the first three Indy movies, okay... I didn't really feel anything for them after I watched them. I thought: 'That was fun' And never thought much of them again. The same thing happened with this movie. It was fun, good, nothing special. The action scenes followed the same style as the first three, over the top and comedic. There was that old fashioned 'discovery' and Indy still had the personality that made Indy 'Indy'.
It seems people gave their final opinions based on the final scene of this film: The Aliens. After watching a man's heart torn from his chest while he was still alive in the second Indiana Jones film, I personally don't think the leap to Aliens is such a big deal.
This film had it's annoying one-liners, some of the scenes were unrealistic to say the least. (Have you tried swinging from vines? It's not easy...) But it's definitely shouldn't be enough to give this a measly 1/10.
If you're looking for a fun, Indiana Jones movie, I recommend it. If you're a purist who ignores the positives to find slight flaws here and there, then stay far away from this one.
Iron Man (2008)
I was NOT expecting this.
I had seen the trailer, and thought it to be 'just another movie' cashing in on today's trend of superhero films. I was never into those kind of movies either. However, pretty soon the name 'Iron Man' was popping up everywhere. In conversation, internet chat-rooms, everything. So, when some people I knew were off to see it, I thought I may tag along. Just to see what the hype was about... I was quite surprised when I walked out of the cinema that day. There are many things that makes this movie highly entertaining - the first, it must be said, was the amazing performance of Robert Downey Jr. as the main character 'Tony Stark'. He played the role of rich American playboy very well. The actual character Tony Stark was someone who I really empathized with I felt sorry for him as the movie progressed, for reasons I won't spoil here. As for the storyline, it's very engaging. For the most part, I found it realistic and believable. Tony Stark didn't have magic or super powers. For me, this was a refreshing change from the typical 'bitten-by-something-radioactive' story. Though I highly enjoyed this film, I found the beginning quite slow. Which brought down it's mark a little. It did take a little while for me to become immersed. Secondly, I felt the character Obadiah Stane (antagonist, played by Jeff Bridges) could have been explored a lot more. However, these minor points pale in comparison to the high points of this very fun film.
The Lion King II: Simba's Pride (1998)
A good sequel for Disney, but it could have been so much more.
When I first saw the original 'The Lion King' in cinemas at the age of four, I'd been hooked. Ever since then, my favorite movie has always been this Disney classic. The sequel came out when I was seven, and for a cheaply made direct-to-video movie, was quite enjoyable to watch. Basically, the story follows on from the original film. To beat the original Lion King would be a near-impossible feat, so when put in perspective, the movie really isn't all that bad. The story is neatly tied in with the original film, with the concept of Scar, the antagonist of the first film, having a family bent on revenge over Simba, the protagonist of the 1st Lion King. The film can be very moving at times, and some songs I even preferred over the original's. However, this movie could have been so much more! Had Disney spent more time on it and released it to cinemas instead of having a direct to video release, this could have easily been just as good as the original. What brought this movie's rating down was the fact the storyline had a lot of unanswered questions - where was this pride int he rpevious movie? Many other gaps fill this film, and are far too vague for the viewer to assume what might have happened.
