The Tree of Life (2011)
Not Good
This is the first movie in a while that a movie has made me genuinely angry. I gave it a 4 simply based on the cinematography which was good, but completely unnecessary. I really did try to get on board, and thought the concept could be there but it ended up being terrible. I have never seen pure cinematography for the amount of time (like 20 minutes straight) in my entire life, and this movie trys so hard to be deep and "beautiful" and it's just not it. The part where the wife is literally floating in the air? That's where it lost it me. The only chance I can see this movie being enjoyable is if you have kids and a family, this movie may make you re think your relationships. It's hard to write a review for this because I have no idea what I watched.
Anger Management (2003)
Love This Movie
This is probably my favorite Sandler movie. Now I will say, I feel like I relate to Sandler in this movie so this possibly is a biased review. My skin was literally crawling when everyone was lying about what Sandler did, especially the early scene on the airplane. Nicholson is great, when he flew the eggs against the wall, and his sneaky personality. I just found the story to be interesting and fun with Nicholsons teaching methods, and with a touch of romance and a happy ending was perfect. Also the cast is so underrated with many familiar funny faces, I really can't point out much wrong this one.
Sayonara (1957)
Good
This movie was decent from start to finish with a happy ending. It addressed racial issues with Americans, especially in the military and with Brandos history of civil rights activism it makes it even a little more special. Brando was good per usual and had some funny moments like when he playfully slapped his comrade 3 times in the face. This movie had a little bit of everything from humor, sadness, and romance. What was really nice was the true shots of the Japan scenery and culture. I found this movie to be engaging throughout and was pleased with the ending. While Brando was good, I wouldn't put this in his top performances.
Billy Madison (1995)
Pretty good
I find this to be one of Sandlers better movies, better than Happy Gilmore. I laughed a good amount of times and a couple times I laughed out loud pretty hard. When the first grade teacher is dancing to the weird music, and when the clown says that he broke his leg and had a brain hemorrhage. I don't know why but that made me laugh a lot. Overall, Adam Sandler is great and always a pleasure to watch. I would recommend this, it may not be the funniest thing you will ever see, but it is quality, and a young Adam Sandler in his prime. I am curious to see how this compares to Mr Deeds and Eight Crazy Nights which I enjoyed as a kid.
Memento (2000)
Too Much
For me, this movie has too much going on, and is too aggressive of an attempt to be original. I respect the fact that it is original, and it takes a lot to write a script of this magnitude, but it's just not an enjoyable watch. I don't like watching movies not knowing what's going on or being confused. Interstellar was a perfect example of a movie that has depth, a big reveal, and requires you to think without being a mess like this. The plot is already deep enough but then you add the reverse chronological order of the story that just makes it a big circle in my opinion. In addition I'm not a fan of movies that are dependent and reliant on a big reveal such as the movie S7even because to me it makes the entire movie a waste, and it's like the whole movie is dependent on the reveal. This movie falls into the category of "objectively good, but not for me".
O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
John Turturro Best Part
This movie was okay, a classic feel good quest story with a happy ending. I thought John Turturros acting was the best part and the southern dialogue writing was good as well. In this movie and Fargo, and No Country for Old Men, the Coen brothers do a good job of the little details in that aspect. However I did not find this to be funny really at all, I smiled a handful of times but never laughed out loud once. In addition, I am personally not a fan of George Clooney so him being the lead makes it tough. Overall though the cast was good, and it was visually good as well. I personally think 7.5 is too high of a rating but quest movies are always fun.
Public Enemies (2009)
Classic Gangster Movie
This movie ultimately is just another gangster movie but it is good and worth a watch. Johnny Depp was great and Bale as always was as well. The dialogue was honestly underrated and I thought they did a good job not making it cheesy and I honestly didn't want to leave the living room to miss anything. Depps flirtatious attitude when he meets Billie was great, and when he tells Agent Pervius (Bale) to get another job I loved the look on Bales face. As every gangster movie goes, Depp just continues and continues to do jobs until someone from the inside rats him out and ultimately it all catches up to him. Great acting, but ultimately the same ole tale.
Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004)
Great Overall Story
Vol 1 was better than Vol 2 for sure but this movie is nearly as good. It's hard to do two movies well like this and it was done. When Kiddo got buried, I thought it was going to be a cheesey escape but I LOVED that they actually created a story for her to get out of that coffin. When she rips out Eles eyeball and steps on it was truly awesome. This one seemed to drag on a little long for some reason but when you find out that Kiddo ran off I truly think it begs the question: Was Bill's actions really that surprising? You run off on a psychopath with his baby and he catches you getting married to someone else? Then it begs the next question, do you kill your daughter's father regardless of what happened? It's quite interesting in my opinion.
The Wild One (1953)
Story Was Better Than Brando
I actually enjoyed the story more than Brando in this one. This is the third movie I have seen with Brando and I liked his other two performances better (Streetcar & Fugitive Kind). Brando wasn't bad by any means, and after reading some of the facts about this movie it made me appreciate his performance more. Brando claims to resonate with the character in this movie and I remember saying that out loud when watching this film that it seemed like he was just being himself. Doesn't say much, (which he was called out multiple times for), does what he wants (which he said), aggressive, yet kind, sympathetic, and caring. Brando really just commands attention everytime he is on screen and for that alone, I like his movies.
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)
Perfect for Tarintinos Style
I haven't been a fan of Tarintinos style until now. It was absolutely perfect for this martial arts, Japanese influenced film. The animation scene with O-Ren was fantastic, the scene when Uma finishes off the last few in the blue lighting backdrop was sleek and fun, and when Uma is standing above the 80 people she just sliced up was absolutely fantastic. The over the top blood spraying, animation, and dialogue was perfect and the iconic yellow outfit was to die for. It's honestly hard to think of anything wrong with this film. It is classic Tarintino where it jumps around a lot but for some reason it just makes so much sense with this film. I greatly enjoy this movie.
She's Gotta Have It (1986)
Good, Underrated Story
I love Spike Lees directing and it was on full display in his first film. While the story necessarily wasn't my cup of tea it was underrated and honestly quite good. Spike showed us both POVs of how men and women act in this particular situation. You see how neither men nor women are perfect and both have their flaws. You see what people are willing to do for love, for sex, and for companionship. You see a young women confused with what she wants, but at the same time is upfront and honest with all the men who keep coming back for more. I thought Spike Lee was funny; the line where he replies to the woman while getting broke up and says "what about you and me?" is a quote able line for me. Greer was obnoxiously funny, and the other gentleman did great as well. I like this movie but wouldn't consider it great.
Blow Out (1981)
Pretty Damn Good
This movie is borderline great. The story is engaging, underrated and the ending was absolutely perfect and very memorable. One of the best movie endings I've seen in my early movie watching career. In addition, the directing and cinematography was underrated as there were a number of shots I found compelling. The fireworks at the end, the skyline view of the city as JT is zooming through the parade, when the murderer kills the woman on the hill and it pans over to the Liberty bell poster, and more. I would say JT was good but not great and Sally's voice was borderline hard to listen to. Some were not fans of the scene of JT driving through the parade and while it was maybe a little random I wasn't totally thrown off by it. The final final scene is just pure magic however.
Scary Movie (2000)
Incredibly Funny For Me
I feel giving a comedy an 8 is too much, but that's how much I enjoyed this movie. I honestly was rolling on the floor for a couple of scenes. I am biased, parody movies are my favorite but this one was funny right off the bat. When looking at comedies for me it's simple: how much does this movie make me laugh. This movie made me laugh quite a bit. You have a very underrated cast, and all the stupid humor you could ask for. When Greg walks over to his locker and picks up that photo of his private parts I literally fell off the couch. In addition when the cop said "what smells in here" and follows up by confirming Doofys words "did you just say poopy?" I fell off the couch again.
Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (1966)
Just Fantastic
I love this movie so much. I honestly can't pick out anything wrong with this movie other than some saying it was dragged out too long. The whole scene with war and blowing up the bridge probably could have been left out but even with that scene you have great dialogue and great shots and as Roger Ebert has said "it was like a movie within a movie" Eli Wallach was fantastic, Clint Eastwood commanded the screen without saying much, and Lee Van Cliff is just a perfect cowboy. The relationship between the characters is great, the story is engaging with a firework ending, the score is underrated and fantastic, there is great quotes, great shots and this a movie I want to watch over again writing this review. Honestly, my favorite scene is when Tuco is running towards the cemetery with that skyline view with the music playing. It was the celebration of the long fought journey. While the final final scene was borderline parody, it was dramatic in just the right way. I love this movie.
John Q (2002)
Good
So the first 30 minutes or so, I was ready for this movie to be terrible but it really got better as it progressed. Denzel of course was the only shining star in this one but I thought he was good, and great with the scene of him talking to his son towards the end. That scene honestly was fantastic, a father telling his son all the things a father tells his son throughout the course of fatherhood but in this case doing it in a matter of seconds. Of course you see the dark side of the healthcare system and while people complained that part and the rest of the movie was unrealistic, what movie isn't unrealistic? In addition you have a compelling questioning of what would you do for your child, and does John Q deserve jail time? I think 7 is a perfect rating. Good not great.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)
Feel Good Movie For Me
This movie is so unique to me that I had to give it an 8. Calling it a "great movie" would be a stretch, but the cross-over animation is so well done for it's time and there truly is not many other movies like this. A movie that can be enjoyed by kids and adults, there is humor, a happy ending, and a classic hero story. This is a movie that you can create a tradition with your family, and have this on every year. It is enjoyable, easy to watch, and the cross-over is so entertaining that it is memorable. Bob Hoskins was great, Jessica Rabbit was hilarious, and I truly can't get enough of this movie.
Pulp Fiction (1994)
I Get It, but Not For Me
I think I am coming to realize that Tarintino's style is just not for me. I can understand why this movie is considered great: It is incredibly unique, the screenplay, the directing, the writing, the acting were all very good. I loved the dialogue between the actors especially between Vincent and Jules as it was incredibly realistic, and each story was entertaining and keeps you engaged. However, I found it to be drawn out, and towards the end I was begging it for it to be over. When they circle back to the apartment; that whole scene was a bore, and the ending I felt the same way. At the end, I was just asking myself what is the point of all of this? However, maybe that is the point, there is no point and I should be able to just enjoy good filmmaking, which I can but it is just not for me. I do not need an overall message or lesson, but some structure and overall plot is nice. Overall, I can see this movie growing on me, and it most certainty is a must-watch.
Fargo (1996)
Really Really Good,
This movie is really good, with great acting from all lead characters. I am huge fan of Francis McDormand and she did an amazing job. The Minnesota accents were hilarious, well-done, and very memorable. I feel bad for saying this is not a "great movie" but I can't get myself there. I felt there were a number of random moments, and things left up to interpretation which I am not a huge fan of. The scene with the Asian man was incredibly random, they never really explained what William Macy did, and they never circled back to the son at all. I know some will think its ridiculous I do not like those things but here I am. It does not take away from this movie being very good, with a great cast, entertaining story, good humor, and recommendation to watch.
Bad Boys (1995)
Classic Action, Best Buddy Cop Duo
With these movies, it is easy to just give it a low score, because obviously it is not a film-making masterpiece. We have to look at it for what it is. This is a classic buddy cop, crime action movie with a predictable story line, humorous banter between the lead actors, and unrealistic action shots. With that being said, Smith and Lawrence are perfect together and an amazing buddy cop duo. There are some funny moments, and the cinematography honestly is pretty damn good in this one. The Miami backdrops are a classic hot spot for movies like this, and with the addition of the 911, this movie checks the boxes for a easy to watch, fun movie.
Tropic Thunder (2008)
Pretty Damn Funny
This movie was pretty damn good. While the humor and Robert Downey Jrs role may not be appropriate today, this movie still stands as funny in 2024. The acting from Downey was honestly incredible and the whole cast was great and fun. There were multiple moments where I laughed out loud pretty hard, and this is a movie that definitely could be watched again. I thought the cast worked perfectly together, and having guns and violence in a comedy movie usually ends up in a good time. With a sneaky and surprise visit from Tom Cruise was a nice cherry on top to a great cast. This ranks as a very solid comedy movie in my opinion.
Mississippi Burning (1988)
Intense, Underrated
Getting to see Defoe in a lead role was a pleasure and him and Gene Hackman did great together. The cinematography in this one was fantastic and coupled with the incredibly intense, freighting and cruel story based on true events. If you are from a small southern town like this, you know how real this is and is a reminder of how cruel and terrible slavery and racism really was. The disagreement between Hackman, Defoe and law enforcement provided for a realistic and engaging story that I would say ends in justice. I saw some reviews saying the script lacked some depth and realism and I guess I could agree with that, I think there could have been more intensity in the script but this is still a great movie that I consider a must watch based on the events.
Forrest Gump (1994)
Tom Hanks Range
For me, this movie was more about appreciating Tom Hanks range as an actor as he was really good. This is a must watch movie and is certainly a great movie with multiple tear jerker moments, more funny moments than I anticipated, and a story that forces you to understand that sometimes life sucks no matter how successful you are. However, I don't think I would put this in the category of one of the best movies of all time. Personally, I guess I'm not a fan of movies that just tell the story one's life and I found with this one, it just kept going and going and going with random antics. In addition, Jenny was so hateable that it was hard to watch, but I guess that makes it good right? Random, but my favorite scene was when Lieutenant Dan walked to the wedding with his wife. All of this said, great movie regardless.
Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
Love Love. Rom-Com but Not
I know a 9 may be a stretch but I absolutely love this movie. Maybe I am sucker for romance but this is NOT your typical cheesy rom-com by any means. The chemistry and acting by Cooper and Lawrence is fantastic and the scene when they meet for the first time I literally can't stop thinking about; it's so good. You then have De Niro who is also fantastic in his dad role and a little Chris Tucker addition who is perfect in his small role, just a great cast. You have Cooper who is bipolar and you get to see the real effects of bipolar and the maniac mindset of someone in love. While you know how it will end, it's just so perfectly put together that it doesn't matter. The only thing I will say, is that the score wasn't super emotional like a romance movie but it really doesn't take away much. Great movie.
The Big Lebowski (1998)
Unique, Not Incredible
Watching this in 2024, it is nearly impossible to fully appreciate it but I did not find this to be hilarious or my type of comedy. Bridges was great, and it is definitely not a "stoner comedy" as IMDB suggests. The cut away dream scenes were fun and unique and when Bridges meets Julliana Moore for the first time was actually hilarious. John Goodman was funny as well. In addition, the story was engaging enough for you to want to watch. This movie isn't terrible by any means, and you can understand that when it came out it was probably great but if you are watching this today, it does not hold up in my opinion.
Catch Me If You Can (2002)
Great Movie
I love this movie. This role was perfect and played perfectly by Leo and the chemistry with him and Tom Hanks was great. The scene where they meet for the first time was awesome. This story is fun, engaging, but also some sadness, and depth with a kid who is just trying to get his family back together and is alone in this world. Some say the movie isn't realistic to the actual story but what movie is super realistic? Honestly. You have a great and fun supporting cast with Walken, Garner, and Banks who add the excitement. I think an 8 is a perfect rating but this is one of those feel good movies than can end up being one of your favorites.
