Worthless waste of time
20 December 2021
A poorly acted, unrealistic, boring, pretentious mess. A worthless waste of time that tries so hard to be 'hip'. I guess some people credit this film for showing casual interracial relations in a way that was, I guess, ahead of its time. That could have been really interesting if the characters and the story were better. The so-called improvised dialogue is lame beyond description. None of the characters are very likable and their 'improvised' responses to each other are often totally stupid, absurd, or illogical. The only redeeming thing is seeing a little bit of New York City in 1959. I wish Cassavetes had just gone into the Horn and Hardart there in Times Square and interviewed random people - that would have been far more entertaining and worthwhile.

an overlooked masterpiece

I am amazed at how neglected this film is. It is a real gem. I'm a big Woody Allen film and I consider it one of his best. The story is intelligent, well-written, funny, and charming. The themes of love, fate, and immortality are explored in a thoroughly entertaining way. A great performance by all the actors, but special mention should be made of Jose Ferrer and Julie Haggerty. See this movie. You will not be disappointed.
