The Last of Us: When We Are in Need (2023)
Season 1, Episode 8
10/10
My heart was racing
6 March 2023
The last 10 minutes of the episode was so intense. I don't remember the last time I watched something that me hold my breath and made my heart race. Bella Ramsey keeps knocking it out of the park.

I hate watching shows week to week and I didn't expect much from this show. I never played the game and I've been kind of over the zombie phase.

That said, I look forward to every Sunday and when the episode ends, I'm so mad I have to wait another week.

This episode Bella finally started to understand herself better and realize her strength. She stepped up when she had to and it was awesome to watch. I can't wait for next week.

Okay, but not great
29 January 2023
I really wanted to like this. I heard reviews before I watched and I was really looking forward to it.

The good: it was nice seeing Aubrey Plaza in a serious role. She's funny but it's nice to see something other than her normal shtick. And the overall story was good and thought provoking. I found myself thinking about this movie a lot after I watched it. Sometimes people don't have many options and doing something illegal is much easier.

The not so good: it was far fetched and other than Plaza, the acting wasn't great. I like the main guy, he's from Sons of Anarchy, but why they cast him with that horrible accent?!? It almost felt racist.

Metal Lords (2022)

Silly and fun
29 January 2023
I'm not a metal fan so I didn't love the music...I didn't really expect to though.

I love Jaeden Martell, I think he is one of the best actors of his age and although this isn't his typical role, this was the main reason I watched. He was great, as usual, but the story was fun and more important anyway...friendship and kindness and being a decent person...and if you are a metal fan there are a few cameos.

I'm not sure how many metal fans would actually like it though. It's pretty sweet and cheesy overall and the random appearance of Joe Manganiello. Overall it's worth a watch but probably wouldn't watch it a second time.

No what I expected
28 January 2023
I turned this on because I love the cast. I didn't know anything about the story and didn't read the description so I did not expect a thriller.

It was fun though and much of it is set in the 60s London...who doesn't love that. The story was a bit far fetched but most thrillers tend to be. But I can forgive the plot wholes since it held my interest and the visuals, music and fashion were beautiful. If it keeps me entertained, I can suspend reality for a couple hours...

The cast was great and if you are crushing on Evil Matt Smith in House of the Dragon, you will not be disappointed. It's worth a watch.

The stories were interesting, the writing was weak
15 January 2023
I love True Crime shows but this series needed a stronger writer. They were attempting to build suspense constantly and it distracted for the story telling. It felt like the blurbs for upcoming news stories..."don't touch that dial. What happened to her could happen to you" kind of vibes. True crime kind of writes itself and you don't need to push so hard to sensationalize it. Sometimes I can ignore weak writing, I am here for the story after all, but it was so bad at points I wanted to turn it off. If you don't have enough information to make an hour episode, make it shorter or do more story telling about the victim. If they have a second season I hope they get better writers.

Bullet Train (2022)

Fun and random
7 January 2023
The movie felt a little disjointed but it was still really fun and entertaining. It reminded me of a Guy Ritchie film (think The Gentlemen and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) with a little Kill Bill Tarantino sprinkled in. It has an all star cast including random cameos so, nice surprises.

Overall though it felt a little like they were trying a little too hard. Some of the funniest moments were a laugh at how dumb or predicable it was. My friend and I saw it on a girls night out so our expectations weren't high and that's what I advise. Have fun, don't think too hard and don't expect to be blown away :)

Entertaining
7 January 2023
I like period pieces and detective shows so this was enjoyable. Christian Bale always gives a solid performance and seeing Dudley's transformation was really interesting. He certainly has more range in this than he did in Harry Potter. Why they chose to include Edgar Allen Poe as a character I have no idea. It's not based on a true story so it's just for fun I guess.

Overall though it didn't feel very original. Father haunted by some mysterious circumstances around his daughter, becomes a recluse, some great mystery being him out of his isolation and both mysteries as solved by the end. It wasn't a knock out of the park for me but I still had fun watching it.

Violent Night (2022)

My new favorite Christmas movie!
11 December 2022
I'm a huge fan of the holidays and I love Christmas movies...not Hallmark movies (no offense to anyone that likes those, my mom is one of them) but I like the nostalgic movies or ones that have some quality.

This is a grown up Christmas movie. It is DEFINITELY violent and a bit gorier than my usual taste but it was funny and entertaining and just the right amount of cheesy-ness. Don't take your kids. Take a date or your best friend as a holiday treat. Mt best friend and I went and we both loved it! Highly recommend and I can't wait to buy it and watch it every year :) just be prepared for a lot of gore. I promise it's worth it.

Pleasantly surprised
2 December 2022
I didn't have any expectations, I haven't read the book (I think I will now though) but I know the story. So this isn't a comparison on the book and I love period pieces but I thought it was very well done. I would guess the bad reviews are people that object to this interpretation of the book. It reminds me a bit of Outlander.

It surprises me how relevant stories like this continue to be even nearly 100 years later. Both on the judgement of women and the treatment of workers...the railroad workers strike came to mind as I watch it. Either way, it's worth a watch if you like this find of film.

Disappointing but still ok
30 October 2022
This book was excellent and I adore both Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne. I was so excited when I heard they were attached to the film and although their performances were both excellent, the film itself was so flat and anticlimactic. They didn't even touch on the fact that they suspect he was involved in around 400 deaths or how much the hospitals actually covered up. They could have easily made a limited series out if it and it should have been much more engaging. If the story interests you, and it should terrify anyone who has been to a hospital, read the book. It was much more compelling.

I didn't expect to like it this much
22 July 2022
Most people love Jeff Bridges for The Big Lebowski. I never like the film and have been ambivalent about Jeff Bridges since. I started to like him more after Bad Times at the El Royale but this show blew me away. It's well written and well acted. There is certainly some predictably but I enjoyed it enough to forgive it. I'm glad some of these established actors are taking television seriously because a lot of the best writers aren't in films any longer.

Andrew Garfield blew me away
6 June 2022
I always thought of him as pretty bland and average. I've never seen him in anything of note but he was incredible in this. I read the book and while it was interesting, I found it incredibly boring. This show was not boring. This is what I had hoped the book would be.

Fun and light

It's hard to find movies my mom likes that I also enjoy but it was enjoyable. Obviously there isn't much complexity and it was predictable but I still had a good time watching.

Unexpected
12 May 2022
It reminds me of Westworld season 1 which I loved. I didn't really have any expectations but I thoroughly enjoyed it & I am really looking forward to season 2. I don't usually notice the music or use of sound/sound effects but they used it well. Plus, you really can't go wrong with Josh Brolin.

He is the spoonful of sugar

I, unfortunately, pay attention to the news and constantly have to pause and breath and calm down. This show makes it easier to hear the news of the week and be pissed but also not let it completely break my spirit.

Lower your expectations
6 March 2022
I love Kristen Bell and I admit that I am a huge true crime fan and murder mysteries. I didn't immediately realize it was a parody but I should have know just by the title. I didn't love it. I didn't hate it. I didn't laugh once but I'm not a big fan of parodies. I probably would have skipped it if I knew that's what they were going for.

Disappointing
5 March 2022
I love the cast and I followed this story when it occurred. I was excited to see this but I can't believe they are glorifying what she did and demonizing the friend she stole from. Shonda Rhimes has had some great shows but the more I have seen the more I question her ethics and the message she is sending.

Painful to watch
29 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
So if you are looking for something to pull you out of your own stressful life, maybe hold off on this for bit. My heart couldn't take the beatdown every episode for 10 episodes and I had to take a break in between but I think that is probably apt. This is the life that many women have to live and while it did end on a positive note, (spoiler?) I don't know that it does for many. I loved it and it stuck with me and I definitely recommend watching but it was heavy.

Scary but more Black Mirror scary
29 October 2021
I don't usually like horror or even bother watching it but someone I trust recommend it. I grew up in a religious household and this was terrifying because I know people that 100% would have been in this flock. Crazy how fine the line can be between religion and cult...

I didn't expect much but it was fun and funny. I'm sure I didn't get all the jokes as I am not a gamer but it was clever and creative and you can't lose with Ryan Renolds.

Breathtaking cinematography
22 October 2021
I don't know that I have ever watched a film that was so beautiful scene by scene that I felt like it was a painting coming to life on the screen. I don't normally notice the cinematography tbh but wow, it is gorgeous.

I have never read the books. I am not a huge fan of the Dune from 1984 but I love the genre and I love pretty much all of the cast. I have been waiting to see this for a long time and I was not disappointed. This was the first film I have seen in theaters in over 2 years. It was worth it and I definitely think it has to be seen in the theater. I will probably go a second time. They better make part 2....

Two of my favorite actors
13 October 2021
This was a heavy show and it doesn't wrap it up with a nice bow so don't expect to feel good at the end but it was raw and real and performed beautifully.

So bad
13 October 2021
There must be a lot of nostalgia for the people that rated it so high. I saw it when I was younger and I hated it then. I've watched it a few times since trying to give it another chance but it's just dumb, the acting is horrible, I honestly can't think of a redeeming quality but I do love Jennifer Connelly and Jim Henson is certainly creative with the characters. It's too dark for smaller children who wouldn't notice how juvenile the writing is and it's too corny for older kids.

Underrated Gem
8 October 2021
I don't think I heard about this movie until it was streaming but it is terrific and sadly underrated. I was laughing out loud for a lot of it. I wouldn't have guessed Ryan Gosling would be good at being the butt of all the jokes but he was hilarious. He should definitely do more comedy.

It didn't really work for me
2 September 2021
I love Mulligan and DiCaprio, I love period pieces and specifically the 20s and I think having modern music can work well sometime but this one didn't work for me at all. Everything felt forced and for all the excellent actors it was too over the top and seemed like a big joke. I don't like Toby McGuire at all but he is usually a decent actor but his performance was really flat.

Bottom line, I wanted to like it but I wish I had skipped it and I will be looking forward to a remake.
