Magnolia (1999)
Script needed polish and refinement.
I say that because I really felt the script needed to be reigned in and narrowed down to a much more concise plot. I understand what the writer/ director's vision was; to make a movie where different stories were interwoven. But, it just didn't gel. I would say my favorite story line was the one with the cop and the junkie. To me that was an interesting enough concept to be a movie on it's own. I also thought a few of the other story lines were cliches: the genius boy being pushed by his dad, The Mysogynistic Guru with parental issues, and the two men dying of cancer( do not mean to cast aspersions on the issue, had a family member succumb to that disease as well). I also thought the opening stories about coincidence, though interesting, belonged in another movie; along with John C Rielly's(Cop) speech at the end; which was also very interesting and moving. The raining frogs bit was also unnecessary and really was done for a reaction other than as an element of the story. Now with that said, I really liked the part where they sang the same song... I found it very touching as well, and was definately something I had not seen before. So, in closing, I understand this movie was inspired by "Short Cuts". I have to say that it lacked the panache of Altman's semi masterpiece. However, if you have seen Altman's "Nashville", you might say that it took Altman two tries to master the story structure that is attempted in "Magnolia". IE Nashville was terrible. Short Cuts was great. So Paul Thomas Anderson would be encouraged to try again. Thank You and good night.
Phone Booth (2002)
Al Pacino circa Dog Day Afternoon
I think this is one of the best entries in the thriller category so far. I thought Colin Ferrell did an excellent job with his character. I hate to use this word, but he really did an Homage to Al Pacino; and this movie had feel of Dog Day Afternoon. I too was a little annoyed with the real time photography. I hope this is not a popular trend.Anyway, other than that no other complaints.
Rush Limbaugh (1992)
A talk show unlike others that never got it's due
Before Rush had his show there, were other conservative talk show hosts. But no one was able to match the style and class of Rush's. He was topical, funny, and warm-hearted. It's too bad he never got a decent time slot. I would love to see some of the reruns. It would be neat to see how he was back then.
Blood, Guts, Bullets and Octane (1998)
A great movie the second time around
I did not like this movie when I saw it in the theater. I basically thought it was another Quentin Tarantino rip off. But I saw it again on cable and i realized what this movie really was. It is basically a marvel of movie making. As said before, the acting and delivery is wooden, but that was what gave it it's charm. It reminded me of Mamet's House of Games. I think the director Joe Carnahan is the new Quentin Tarentino... and will be one to watch.
The Other Half (2001)
The Other half in a nutshell.
POSSIBLE SPOILERS Mario Lopez: the hunky young guy that says all the things that women want to hear. He is sensitive and really "gets it" when it comes to what women want. Danny Bonaduce: he's the bad boy. He is there to tell the women that all men are dogs. Why? It is because he was once a dog himself. And finally, there is Dick Clark. He is the wise nice older guy there to give his advice to the younger guys. You have all the male archetypes here that when put together make up the perfect man. This is the kind of show that if a guy is unlucky he will watch with his girlfriend; and during the show she will elbow him in the ribs and say "See, even these guys admit men are terrible communicators." or something similar to that. In summary, this is basically daytime trash.
Jack's Back (1988)
A good little horror flick
As said before it was James Spader that carried this movie. Without him this would have been a straight to video movie, which it wasn't. SPOILERS My only nitpick is that they shouldv'e had him work out and buff up for the part since he was going to have to take on a psycho path that was built like a dump truck. But other than that this was a good movie.
Pretty in Pink (1986)
A movie that went for atmosphere
I like this movie mainly because at the time I saw it i was in highschool and was involved a very similar love triangle. This movie did a great job in creating a hip, artsy atmosphere... and i mean that in a good way. It also symbolizes everything good about the eighties in that there wasn't anything that you wore or did that couldn't made to be cool.
Grand Canyon (1991)
One of Kasdan's Best
You must see this movie souly for the opening scene. As usual this is a great film that was under appreciated. What make this movie great, is that the characters seem to matter to one another, and that is one of the movies themes; as well as nothing in life is random. I could go on but I will close by saying it is Kasdan's best.
