Well written and executed
20 August 2023
I am working my way through Mike Flanagan's filmography and this was early on my list. In typical Flanagan fashion, he takes a seemingly simple concept and adds elements of complexity that make the film feel smart and engaging to the viewer. I enjoyed the plot of this film and the direction in went, which I rarely feel in the horror genre. This wont win any awards for jump scares or particularly gruesome elements of horror so if that is your thing you may feel a bit let down but it was well done overall. The acting did not feel forced and the story unfolded very naturally, I will say watching this 10 years later than it's release for the first time that I couldn't help but feel the way it was filmed dates it specifically to that time. But that isn't necessary a negative as it didn't take away from the plot. Overall, a great film and I am excited to continue to follow Flanagan's work as a writer and director!

Refreshingly playful and smart
20 August 2023
Such a fun movie! Definitely for the repressed theater kids looking to make fun of themselves, their pasts, and to bathe in nostalgia. Filled with many "if-you-know-you-know" style references all of which were so smart and hilariously placed. I felt it all during this movie. I cried, I smiled, I cackled and I gasped. My one qualm was with Ayo Edebiri's character, it felt like there was so much potential for her to add to the plot yet she really ended up adding nothing and I was left feeling unsure why she was there. Maybe this was the fault of editing for times sake? Regardless, as a Broadway lover I am always excited to see the talent of Ben Platt and despite his forte usually being the stage rather than the screen, I thought he did a great job with this character. I also think this character was quite similar to him in real life so im sure that made the performance more convincing but regardless I was entertained! I also loved the the casting and dynamic of him and Noah Galvin in the film. I hadn't seen much of Molly Gordon's work in the past but I loved her performance in this as well. I have no idea how they found these child actors but my god are they talented, hoping this opens up plenty of opportunities for them! Overall, this film is lighthearted, full of laughs, and touching. I recommend to all but especially the theater kids!

More Intrigued by the Films Reception than the Film Itself
20 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I am shocked at how polarizing this movie has been in terms of feedback. I say this as someone who was not anxiously anticipating its release nor as someone who was triggered by it's growing popularity, I went into this with neutrality. I knew this would have more powerful messaging than it seemed as I am a fan of Gerwigs previous works, but I knew if it did not that the film probably would leave me unfulfilled. For that reason, I was most bored during the first section of the film that was too lighthearted childlike for my taste but I was excited to get into the deeper plot points. This being said, I recognize the film was marketed ingeniously to produce buzz, however it was ineffective in describing what the movie was really about. I can totally see why parents may have thought this was appropriate for children despite the PG-13 rating but this absolutely was not made for kids. This was a campy commentary on the patriarchy in America and the modern feminist movement. These plot points were actually my biggest criticisms of it. From my perspective this displayed an accurate depiction modern feminism, which often neglects to acknowledge it's roots grown by in black feminists and the patriarchies disproportionate effects on low income women, especially those of color. This movie promoted a feminist message that feels decades behind, and in such an obvious way that I am shocked that this explored new ideas or dramatically moved anyone in the audience. It was a blunt reminder of how behind we are but not even through the messaging in the film but rather how viewers are reacting. The only feminist commentary beneath surface level that I would've been more excited to explore were made via side comments from various side characters like the socialist/anarchist daughter (who by the way I found upset to have seen painted as mean and then only kind after conforming to barbie's ideas of feminism, but I digress). With all that being said, it had a fantastic soundtrack, made me laugh quite a few times and Ryan Goslings acting was superb (ironically) although the whole cast did well with the script they were given. Justice for Michael Cera's character! I would've loved to see his cravings to break away from societal norms be further explored! The movie was fun, campy in a more obvious way than I usually like, but that's the mainstream Hollywood box office industry for you. My overall take is this wasn't made for a person like me who craves exploring new ideas or highlighting important calls to action as they relate to feminism rather than this rehashing this surface level anti-patriarchy message. I am glad that this is making people converse in what I'm understanding are new ideas to many, I am just shocked that they are in fact, new.

So much untapped potential
25 July 2023
I have fallen victim again to an enthralling trailer with a movie that brought none of the same energy. This definitely falls under the psychological thriller category rather than as a horror film. It is beautifully shot and had potential to have exciting unpredictable twists but the decided reality for these characters fell so short of exciting for the viewer. I found it also took way too long for any elements of horror or shock to be played out leaving me so bored and frustrated for the majority of the film. I think this rating would have been much higher if the plot went in a different direction but unfourntunetly I was left feeling disappointed and unfulfilled.

Hard to watch
25 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Finally tuned into this movie after hearing it's hype on tiktok a few years back and seeing maya hawke and sadie sink are involved in the project. Much to my surprise, Maya must have had some scheduling conflicts because they certainly underutilized their biggest talent.. This movie certainly held true to the 80's slasher vibe that I think it was going for and like many from that time, it was not very well done. I found myself pondering if this was supposed to be a kids movie many times as it was so difficult to keep my attention as an adult. It is so mild for the horror category with no new ideas, tropes or character development and I would not recommend it to anyone whos age doesn't end in "-teen".

Better than expected
17 July 2023
Decided to give this a watch after a few years as I remembered being intrigued by the trailer but also hearing an overwhelmingly negative response after it's release. I did little research about the plot or the critics reviews prior to watching and maybe this method proved to keep my expectations low and not leave me disappointed, but I enjoyed this film. It was certainly nothing to write home about, but is was well shot, acted, and explored some complex themes through aging with an eerie dystopian twist that I found to be clever. I understand than M. Night's films are usually received as a mixed bag but I'd argue this was well done and not nearly as bad as the reviews make it seem.

1/2 step above a hallmark movie
17 July 2023
Admittedly, I only watched this movie because of the cast. I generally love Kristen Bell's even when she's handed a sub par script; this case was no exception except the word love may be an over exaggeration. I feel a similar sentiment toward Ben Platt, who I believe is one one of Broadway's best but he is continually casted in poorly excepted movies like this one. This film made me cringe far more than it made me laugh, I'll choose to blame the writers but I am confused why this star studded cast committed to this project. This film was another reminder that the mainstream film industry (specifically in the genre of comedy) only like to cast gay main characters to oversexualize them. It's unfortunate representation and the joke is old. If you're bored and curious, sure, give it a watch but I would in no way recommend this film as a way to spend time you deem as valuable.

Disappointing
13 July 2023
As a longtime fan or horror and someone who found that interest through the insidious and conjuring universes, I was expecting more out of this film. It felt as though there was a think tank meeting where some important ideas were thought of and they decided to explore those without really fleshing them out. There were hardly any jump scares or truly unique elements of horror, overall just a very predictable plot. Despite the runtime, this movie felt very fast, almost like an episode of a TV show. This in combination with an unbearably cringy script for the best friend/roomate character made this my least favorite movie of the franchise and one that I could've lived without.

Touching and Innocent
13 July 2023
This film hit home for me through many different elements, so I may be biased, but I feel as though there is a character in this film that every person can either relate to or has crossed paths with in their own lives. Shots vary perspectives from characters of all ages and backgrounds yet each scene tends to highlight their innocence or naïveté that turns to a journey of growth. The scenes in this film are simple but hold an intense gravity over the viewer as you navigate the weight of the underlying themes. I'd suggest this if you're looking for a good cry or want to wallow in a heavy emotional state!

Well acted comedy that's not to be taken seriously
27 June 2023
Overall I found this movie to be a fun watch. Is it the most thought out plot of a whodunit film that's been done? Not by any means. But it felt like a lighthearted comedy that used horror as a compliment rather than the opposite way around, which I found refreshing. As a person in there mid 20's I enjoyed this, but think it would likely be more of a hit for an audience even younger than myself. I will say that it was collectively well acted by the cast. If you're looking for a fun comedy with elements of mystery and horror, this is the watch for you! But you may enjoy it more if you're up to date on gen z humor.

Less Powerful than the Memoir
24 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'll forewarn you- this perspective is coming from someone who read Jeannette Walls' memoir of the same name and gave it a full 5 star rating. This film adaptation fell short in many ways. It is clear that in a Hollywood styled effort to make a nearly indigestible case of child abuse more digestible, they cut out some of the most horrific yet important aspects of Jeannette's experience that makes the book so powerful. This sense of overcoming unparalleled adversity is present in the film but there's a sense of not understanding how exactly the characters got to this point. Woody Harrelson put on a noteworthy performance of the father Rex, as he was written, but the undertones of the movie are not the same as they are directly from Jeannette's mind. In short, if this movie does not trigger you in too many ways as it is written for the big screen, the book sends a much more powerful message with more shocking and disturbing context.

Worth the Watch to Experience it's prequel, Pearl
24 June 2023
I originally watched this film as an introduction to Mia Goth's acting, which I must say is incredible this film. I was thrilled to see such a star studded cast including Jenna Ortega and Brittany Snow. That being said I think the writing did not live up to the casts potential. If you are looking for a nostalgic 70's/80's style slasher film, this might fit the bill. Motives of characters in this film left a lot to be explained and fell short in my eyes. That being said, this film serves as the introductory film to the prequel, "Pearl" which is far more better excecuted and "X" is totally worth the watch just to experience "Pearl" in all it's glory. Overall, his film was good but not great. However, I look forward to the character development in the partner films surrounding this plot line.

Pearl is a Prequel that Blew Away it's Predecessor
24 June 2023
I watched this film immediately after finishing "X" and I will not elaborate in excess on that film, but "Pearl" did an outstanding job providing background to an otherwise perplexing character in it's partner film. If you are looking for a film that can only be defined as campy, this is the one for you. I found it playful, funny, ridiculous, and filled with so many intentional easter eggs from how we know the character of Pearl develops later in her life. There are obvious parallels in the coloration of the film, set design, and costuming to the original 1939 film adaptation of the Wizard of Oz, which I found to add to this movies charm. This is a must watch but I recommend watching it's less praised partner film "X" first, it makes the plot and hidden callbacks in this film that much better.
