The Misadventures of Mistress Maneater (2020)
Rock Solid
I straight-up vibed with this flick for mad reasons. Real talk, I had no clue what I was gettin' into... it kicks off all fun and playful, then hits you with mad twists and reveals that take it deep, all while keeping that quirky vibe. It's like it's juggling genres like it's nothing - going from comedy to crime, poignant drama to straight-up romance, smooth as butter. The main peeps got that undeniable chemistry, and I was ridin' with them right from the jump. This joint is pure entertainment, with surprises poppin' up left and right. No doubt, gotta give it a solid cosign - highly recommend checkin' it out!
Dirty Beautiful (2015)
Fun title, "Dirty Beautiful" is a witty romantic comedy.
Fun title, "Dirty Beautiful" is a witty romantic comedy. If you enjoy movies about relationships this one's for you. It's relatable, with characters you might recognize and relate to. David, the main character, is a hopeless romantic seeking a girlfriend. The movie has great dialogue and presents real-life scenarios. I really enjoyed this one. It is a realistic film with heart which is something I believe the world really needs more of these days. Yes relationships are messy but they are also beautiful and "Dirty Beautiful" does a wonderful job at reminding us that this is true and always has been. Check it out, I think you'll enjoy it.
The Eve (2015)
Dive into the mystery - it's worth the ride
"The Eve" is a slick indie horror/thriller, a must-watch for the thrill-seekers. Dive into the mystery - it's worth the ride.
This movie ain't your average horror flick, it's a tense thriller that keeps you on edge. Picture this: four friends hitting up a cabin in Martha's Vineyard for New Year's Eve, but soon enough, drama's in the air. Tensions rise, and bam, one of them bites the dust. The whodunit kicks off, with characters vanishing and trust hitting rock bottom. No spoilers, but the killer? Total shocker for me. The last shots and that soundtrack? Straight-up haunting, a directorial move that hits deep.
Boston2Philly (2016)
Set in the heart of Philly
Boston to Philly ain't your regular flick. It's a gripping indie ride that spins a tale of friendship, redemption, and self-discovery. Set in the heart of Philly, this joint hooked me right in, showcasing why indie films are my jam. The lead actors? Straight-up chemistry. You can feel it, adding that realness to their characters. The director? A storytelling wizard, keeping the crowd locked in with a mix of humor and heartfelt moments, smooth like butter. This movie is a gem for those craving a deep, character-driven drama. It's a nod to the storytelling game and the lasting ties that carve our paths.
Broken City (2023)
Broken City gets it, keeping it real with gritty empathy.
Despite the low-budget hustle and a cast of mostly new faces, this drama hits different. Jonathon Smith's gripping tale, paired with a real street vibe, sells this drama big time. Sure, Broken City wears its indie budget on its sleeve, but that's the charm. Having mostly new faces adds to that realness. The lead brings a natural vibe, a real-life weariness that hits deep. Smith, pulling double duty as writer and lead, drops a mix of swagger and moral chaos. This flick dives into the messy world of crime, kicking off with good intentions but spiraling out of control. No winners in this game, and Broken City gets it, keeping it real with gritty empathy.
The Allnighter (2023)
Indie gold blending comedy and drama
Yo, peep this: The Allnighter ain't your regular flick-it's indie gold blending comedy and drama, serving up real characters hustling through that adulting game. Terence, played by Owen Beckman, and Belle, played by Gretchen Lodge, bring that realness, flaws and all, but they still shine bright and likable, you feel me?
And check this lineup: this indie joint pulls in big names! Justine Bateman, David Koechner, Tom Lister Jr, James Russo, Naomi Grossman-mad surprises! It's a whole squad of talent, for real.
I'm throwing my cosign on this one-The Allnighter's a gem! I had a blast and two thumbs way up, yo. Aimee Graham's got my attention now-can't wait to see what she's dropping next!
Token Taverns (2023)
It's not just a throwback for the OGs!
Bob Rose deserves props for bringing this era back to life. The doc hits home for arcade veterans, but it's not just for us old-timers-it's a gripping watch for anyone keen on the '80s vibe. The interviews? Engaging as all get-out, giving you the real deal straight from the players. The camera work? Smooth, capturing the arcade buzz, and the editing? Flawless.
In a world where indie documentaries sometimes miss the mark, "Token Taverns" shines bright. It's not just a throwback for the OGs; it's a deep dive into '80s society. Bob Rose's work is a classy salute to a rad era, making it a real good time for anyone watching, whether for the memories or the history lesson.
As the Village Sleeps (2021)
Holds it ground.
Yo, peep this: "As the Village Sleeps" ain't your typical horror-thriller, but it holds its ground. Terry Spears and Chloë Bellande bring the heat despite the low budget, using a remote spot and a crew of good-looking kids fighting for their lives. Spears plays it slick, never fully revealing the beast or the bodies, keeping it all up to your imagination. And trust, that's way more chilling than some weak gore and makeup.
They hit you with those jump scares, just like how "The Blair Witch Project" rocked it back then. The crew plays their roles tight, each character popping even as they're losing it (and maybe their lives). You got your cocky dude, the last girl standing, some boyfriends, and the pals who are basically walking targets for the horrors. Don't sleep on it-this flick knows how to work those tropes to its advantage.
Jovi & Lou (2023)
Did I mention Victoria Strange plays God!
O. K. so to be fair I must say I only watched this movie because it stars the indie actor Victoria Strange as Jovi, AKA God. Seriously just the idea of Victoria playing God is enough for me and she is great in the role. What I was pleasantly surprised by was the actor who plays Lou, AKA the devil. Trevor Van Uden is very charismatic in the role of Lou and plays it beautifully. Honestly all the acting is great. The movie was great all around for an indie flick. Something that doesn't always ring true with a lot of indie movies. So if you like indie films you gotta watch Jovi & Lou. It does not disappoint.
