Sting (2024)
An A-graded b-movie style
I really liked this one; almost a lot; it's got a good creepy vibe all wrapped up in a stuffy atmosphere made up of isolation, difficult living circumstances, overbearing & stingy landlord, a creature with a growing appetite doubled with a scary cunning, and a gentle pinch of barely there humoristic touch.
It's well played and despite lacking characters to really root for -and that feels intended- they all but one or two got some depth and surely one can't help but feel for all of them...apart maybe for one truly weirder tenant.
Kid can play and the after credits don't disappoint.
Feel I could watch this again some day, before a sequel it that'd be on the cards.
Pain Hustlers (2023)
A stellar cast to my taste and a true story
...which makes it less appealing since most knows how this'll go; cast saves it but barely, "Pain is Pain" is just about it and barely grazed at the root of it which I suppose is "Greed is Greed"; the less is more approach didn't work for me there but ok, a must-see and a very light 6, for the cast, who truly delivers but it ain't no John Grisham or some other Dark Waters or better yet : Erin Brockovich,
comparing that to Wolf of Wall Street though, no, not really, the product those guys sell is just air and consequences are more or less psychological or what happens to people when they "just" lose everything because others placed bets on their Company, but this story is how thru a sleezy system, people who swore The Oath to do no harm actually ruin your health and/or kill you.
Ballerina (2023)
Plenty to like...thinking to rewatch already
Enjoyed that Korean movie more than I thought I would : a simple revenge story that leads its avenger down a surprisingly way filthier path of Evil than she or I ever expected from the onset it's ridonculous; plenty of violence not too over the top, charmingly idiotic even at times yet to the point, always; and the lead actor is awesome, all dat in shocking/surprising settings.
If I had to complain, I'd say we fly over dark places and its creeps too easily, because fer sure there's real horror in there but it's implied alright and it left me satisfied with a less is more kinda feel.
Easy 8..a classic ?
The Continental (2023)
Delayed watching but then...
Right, how was it..not that bad : nothing we haven't seen here, there, everywhere, take Reservoir Dogs and make it spin faster, add a Gotham-like NYC and give an Indiana Jones meets Ocean 11 then keep it rolling.
But but but, this is a John Wick Universe so it does keep us grounded and more focused on what's a hand, name-dropping/classic car and the origin story unfolds as it should, which is with pace, blood and cynical humour.
All in all ? Nearly a must-watch : well yeah, I'd like to know how Winston got to run the Continental since he wasn't "ever" tied to the whole thing, how his friendship with Mr. Charon started....but of course, john wick isn't in there and that's almost a bummer.
Corner Office (2022)
Weird trip well worth a look
It is...is it the tale of a man who became brilliant while losing his sanity... is it an essay on how to produce brilliance or at least better productivity at low level office work...is it a mission statement for companies to detect mental disorders at the office, offer different approaches on how to deal with it-including giving leeway if productivity is unaffected or even beneficial to productivity before an employee shows up at work one morning and start shooting colleagues ?
Or is this a thesis on how the movie Brazil could've looked like had its budget been slashed by 10.
Not qualified to answer any of dat, still I don't regret my time, felt I just looked thru a crack and saw something interesting but hard to describe, felt the unease one must feel at trying to look past the uneasy until it disappears or hoping it doesn't affect you if left alone...
It is a good tale, lightly creepy and Mr Bean charming/annoying well served by a good cast and of course Jon Hamm.
A good 6 for me.
