The Creator (2023)
Was the writing for this movie generated by cheap AI?
I wanted to like this movie and was optimistic going into the theater due to the trailer and general premise. Within the first 30 minutes though I was growing exhausted by the cheesy writing, the forced and soulless "emotional character-building" scenes, and unrealistic character decisions. By the 45 minute mark I needed to leave the theater and did just that.
The only reason I gave this 4 stars was because the visuals were pretty cool, especially the USS Nomad which is a huge flying military base meant to hunt down hostile AI.
There was potential for this movie to be pretty good but the writing and acting sabotaged it.
Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn (2012)
Top-tier scifi content
This film is what originally got me interested in Halo. I had never played the games, watched the show, or read the books. I enjoyed it so much as a standalone scifi movie that I watched it several times and began branching out into other Halo content until I've gotten to the point where I've played all games and have read a half dozen books.
The acting is quite good, the writing is solid, and the adherence to the Halo lore and is perfect. The Spartans and covenant depicted in this movie are simply awesome. This film should have been shown in theaters and properly promoted because scifi fans every where would appreciate it. I wish they'd make more because this studio has insane potential.
Absolutely loved it, well done!
Silo (2023)
Masterful storytelling & world-building with superb visuals and music
This dystopian sci-fi is not one to miss if you enjoy slow and methodical storytelling and world-building. The mysteries and characters of the Silo are compelling with overall great acting and writing throughout with only small, temporary, and infrequent shortcomings.
What I especially appreciate about this show is the consistent use of color (well, the lack of color) in the Silo. Everything is fairly dark, drab, and dreary. Combined with the subtly dark and beautiful soundtrack, the show manages to create a highly satisfying atmosphere that never feels rushed or overstimulating. It was a genuine pleasure to watch the whole way through.
Great job to everyone involved in the making of this great show.
Extrapolations (2023)
Good, but not great
This series had a lot of potential and to be fair, it missed and achieved some of it.
The first episode is pretty preachy when it doesn't have to be so direct. They did some good world building but should have set up the story differently with better imagery and subtlety. The second episode by contrast has a much better vibe and feels exactly like what the rest of the episodes should have been, more or less.
Overall, it is worth a watch. At times it made me cringe because some of the writing was so cheesy. At other times I was impressed at how they showed some direct and indirect impacts of climate change on people's lives. It made me pretty emotional at times.
They need to make more movies and TV series like this. Using this series and the book Ministry for the Future could be a good foundation.
