Chicago (2002)
Depressing.
It's bad enough that they replaced the groundbreaking and brilliant Bob Fosse choreography with diluted looks-like-Fosse-but-isn't; but didn't anyone tell the filmmakers that musicals are supposed to be fun? Sharp, scary maybe - looks at Cabaret - but always fun. Not here. This is just a sordid sad little tale about unlikeable people. It's a long time since I've seen something that looked so much like a good film - had all the earmarks, big stars, big production values, nifty camera work - but just wasn't.
Narc (2002)
Big scenes, no logic.
This is the kind of movie written so actors can have Big Scenes full of shouting and emotion. But the story logic falls apart the moment you look at it closely. It's hard to get involved in a story when the filmmakers shred human emotional reality so they can have big film moments. It's the kind of movie where the cops never call for backup. No one seems ever to have asked "what would a guy in this situation actually DO?"
SPOILER
For example - if I think my partner is dirty and probably homicidal - do I tell him I'm onto him when we're alone, far away from witnesses, and he's stressed and wielding a shotgun? I do not. I call for backup and stay away from him! Oy yoy yoy.
Kissing Jessica Stein (2001)
Brilliant until the last 20 minutes
Finely acted, keenly written, craftily directed - I was totally with this movie until the plot betrayed me towards the end. The first 80 minutes are your basic romantic comedy - with, of course, the obstacle being that one of the two girls in love is not ready to come to grips with being in a lesbian relationship because she's a conservative Jewish girl from Scarsdale. I felt I knew these characters, and I'd have them over to dinner in a jif. But once the obstacle is overcome, it turns out there's another obstacle, and that is handled far too briefly to be satisfying emotionally. I was left feeling a little sad. Fine if it's an art film, but then the first 80 minutes shouldn't have been a romantic comedy.
Anyway, definitely worth seeing for the clever, witty writing and the adorable characters, but not as good as it could have been, and beware the slightly down ending.
