Saw V (2008)
Let Down, saw-wise
Was it good, meh, I'd say so But was it 'saw' good? No.
People come to see these movies for pretty much 3 reasons. The twist, the gore, and jigsaw (because he's such a BADA**).
The twist, well, there is really only one twist, or at least only one that had the music playing in the background (which usually signifies the big twist). But it wasn't that good, it made sense and was kind of cool I guess, but everything was given to you. I guess I'm not being that descriptive right now, so let me put it this way. You know how it's fun to watch the saw movies again because you get to pick up on things you missed, there aren't many things that are missed.
The gore, compared to the other saws, this should have been rated PG. The grossest (and I must say very cool) part was 5 minutes into the movie. The rest of the gore is suggestive, or really quick.
Jigsaw, he's not really in this movie, which is a real bummer. And when they do show jigsaw, it's not about jigsaw. Everything he reveals or takes part in is just giving back-up/history to Hoffman. To put it short, they never just have Jigsaw being Jigsaw.
Did I like the story line, yeah, The 5 people in a trap fulfilled part of what I was looking for. And the one twist, thought worse than the rest of them, was creative nonetheless.
Should you see saw? If you are a fan of the series, then yes, you can't miss it. But if you just want to catch a flick with some friends, I suggest High School Musical 3.
Carpoolers (2007)
Seinfeld on wheels
Every year, shows come out that are well below par (Most coming from the ever-so spontaneous Fox network). But when I finished watching the okay show Cavemen, I came across this show and realized that Carpoolers is not one of them.
This show is another comedy that is basically about nothing (Like Seinfeld), but still remains original and funny. Which is nice, because you can still pick up where you left off if you didn't see the last episode. But more serious than sitcoms where you just listen to a laugh-track playing after stupid jokes. The jokes are more appreciable, things you can remember, instead of being funny for the moment, and then forgetting it 5 minutes later. Even the plots are funny in their own way.
The movie centers around four guys and the time the spend sitting in their car, working, and hanging out at home.
Gracen, a married man with a 'napolean dynamite' style 20-something kid, is the sensible one of the group. Though smarter than the rest of the group, he is witty, and is hilarious when pointing out the mistakes of the others. Always having to deal with his son weird antics, and the fact that he isn't as young as he used to be, he still manages to be funny in his own way. Always assuming the worst of things, he really relates to some of the older people watching the show.
Laird, the divorced cool bachelor is always on the prowl. Looking for girls and telling stories of the never-on-screen times he has with his one day girlfriends. Definitaly the dumbest of the group, he still charms everyone and keeps you wanting more. He is best friends with Gracen, and they really do make a dynamic duo.
Aubrey, the married father of 7, is the basically the slightly happier version of Debbie Downer or Negative Nancy. He always brings up his problems at home into the conversations, yet manages to humor things up when he tries to escape from his home life by getting into other things going on around him.
Doug, the newly-wed with a baby, is my personal favorite. The newest to the car-pool, he is still adjusting to the weird habits of the group. Always commenting the others obvious mistakes, he still gets sucked into what is going on while trying to be accepted.
This is a new and refreshing show and should be given a chance.
Saw IV (2007)
Saw 4, is sawfly good!
Continueing after Jigsaw's death, this movie follows officer Rigg, who has played a minor role in the previous 2 films (and didn't show up in the first one). With Jigsaw dead, the traps are set and Rigg has to make his way through the tests in order to fulfill his 'obsession'. With having to deal with Jigsaw and Amanda out of working order, they really make the movie worth seeing by bringing in the new characters to work with. Even though some just came in in this installment, you feel like you've been cheering them on since the first. Saw IV was a genius and intriguing movie that equals out with all of the others. Unlike Saws 1 and 2, this has fine acting from all aspects. Even with Rigg, who we never really got to see shine, played his role well. The gore factor is not as bad as the third one, and the traps go back to the basics, which make them even more disturbing. Each component in the mechanisms are carefully placed to really bring the realism out of the film. I definitely recommend seeing this flick, this one isn't just a blood infested movie, but just a good movie in general. As the movies plays out, you keep catching on to the little surprises and see the development of all the characters. And like the hunt we all take part in, trying to find jigsaw's new apprentice, characters from the movie help us out by taking part in the search. Bringing in new clues, and unravel mysteries of Jigsaw's work. The ending, like always, is intense and will leave you speechless. Again, this is a good movie, and even better, a good saw movie.
28 Days Later... (2002)
Must buy, Must see, Must be one of the better horror movies!
The plot: (No spoilers, just things you will see in the first 5 minutes) Animal activists get in quite a slip-up when they try to free rage infected monkeys. And the virus contained by them, known as the 'infection' quickly spreads throughout the UK, where the story takes place. The protagonist Jim wakes up in a hospital from what seems to be a comma, with no one around. Shortly, he realizes that he is the only one there. But when put to the test of life-or-death, he manages to survive with the help of others the attack of the infected.
Every year, the movie industry comes out with movies that makes you just think..."Why did they even make this?". Well not 28 days later. This British 'zombie' flick has many of the needed qualities to make a good scary movie. It has good acting by the leads Cillian Murphy AKA Jim, and Naomie Harris AKA Selena. And the talents these actors contribute to the movie is definitely good thing. With distinctive personalities and relatable qualities, you really root for the characters. With an interesting plot that thickens when the main character steps into the almost un-real world of the time after the "infection" started. Jim keeps the story going with the curiosity of this phenomenon. And the duel antagonists counter each other yet both contribute to Jim's struggle, and keeps you wanting more. The scares are very scary, weather it's pop-out-at-you scary, or just teeth-clenching scary. Even the obvious ones, just psych you out more knowing that something scary is going to happen. With different ways of showing something scary, this scare-factor is fresh and out there, yet it works fantastically. This has your heart racing from the beginning and never lets off. This movie will seriously draw you in, and have you literally screaming at the characters to keep going when they are in danger. I've seen good horror's, but nothing similar that is as good as this. No twist ending, but for-sure an ending worth seeing. The over-all job done on this movie is amazing and seems to have very good direction. Everyone should give this movie a chance. You won't be let down.
Hard Candy (2005)
Kick-butt heroin in a kick-butt movie!
This movie was just plain and simple good. It steps away from all of the detectives, and all of the police, and all of the 'save-the-day boyfriends', and instead fallows '14' year-old Hayley Stark (Ellen Page). And the eerie antagonist, Jeff Kohlver (Patrick Wilson).
Plot: Hayler meets Jeff over the internet, and asks to have a photo-shoot. As they meet, both characters are carefully working their wit to each other. And as good foreshadowing and good build up shows, Hayley has the upper hand. She works her way into his head and gathers as much info as she can from what she thinks is a pedophile. As time moves on, this movie turns into an exciting thrill-ride with unsuspecting twists coming from each character.
As stated before, this movie is a step-away from the blood-and-guts, and a crazed torturer trying to talk sense into unsuspecting citizen. Hard Candy turns the tables, and instead had the protagonist doing the dirty deeds. Hayley has all the right moves, and perfectly devises her plan against Jeff, and never lets off. With some of the best acting I've seen from a teen, she pulls off what some adult actors try to do. Even Patrick gives us the bang for our buck with his talent. As both characters continuously shift rolls in the hour and a half power struggle, this movie really proves it has it all. Even at the end as both characters fight for survival, a slight twist definitely tops the movie off.
Halloween (2007)
Mmmmmm, No.
No, just no. This movie was a complete bomb in my mind, and I thought it would be for everyone else. It seems the new generation horror watched must love watching pointless gore. I feel weird saying this since I'm 15 and my favorite movie is saw 3, but still, this movie was an insult! The beginning starts out with a white trash family being idiots toward each other, and none of them having a reason for their stupid actions. Mainly the deranged hillbilly that lives in their house. But Mike is the worst, he has sick thoughts and actions that carry out into the first 30 minutes of the film. I don't want to get into to much, in fear of giving spoilers, but this whole part is pretty crappy. So if you do see it, maybe just skip the first half hour and watch the rest of it.
OK, so mike is an adult now, big woop dee doo! More importantly, we finally get to see the 3 slu..... not so lady like girls that call themselves actors: Laurie: The once loved fighting female, now turned into this sad little girl who would most likely been texting the whole movie if it weren't for the all grown up 7 feet tall Mikey. Not the worst acting, but definitely takes away from the cute naive girl.
Linda: First off, if you take out all of the parts where she is either having sex, naked, or cussing, she would be on air for about 1 minute. You can't really tell if she is a good actor or not, because she barely does anything, but she does give an disappointing scene after her and her grease-monkey boyfriend explore the birds and the bees.
Annie: In my opinion, the worst of them all. She takes the role of the, I'm to cool to follow the rules, character. The acting is by far the worst, booooooo. That's really all I need to say.
The only thing I would recommend about this, is the fact that Michael still kicks peoples butts. This invulnerable killing machine still reigns terror over the people in the movie. Even as a little child.
In short, don't see it, unless you haven't seen the original, then be my guest.
I Know Who Killed Me (2007)
I know what killed it!
If you like seeing pointless torture, pointless stripping, and pointless actions, then this is the movie for you. Lindsay Lohan stars in this, well, not the best film, as a girl who is found after being kidnapped, and takes on her alter-ego. Not a bad plot, eh? But when it starts going, we see that while Lindsay was in her time of need, she was put through extreme torture. And I won't spoil it for you, but let's just say that there was no good reason for it. And when she comes back completely different, we see what she thinks that happened. Which is basically full of whores stripping, and transitions that looks like a toddler made them. With a twist that catches some people off-guard, and screams out to others, it really isn't all that good. See something else instead, or at least wait for it to come out on DVD where you can make fun of it the whole time with your friends.
Saw III (2006)
Saw 3 is the Bee's Knees
*****************************No Spoilers**************************** The Saw franchise is best described as a psychological thriller. With personalized traps such as, Sawing off your own foot, or having to kill another living person. And this one, had to deal with something that everyone has, a want for revenge.
Of course in this flick, revenge has been taken to a new level. The revenge is already been put upon but the infamous 'Jigsaw', and it is up to Jeff, one of the stars of the film, to forgive the victims wrong-doings.
With the by-far the best acting, best effects, best story, and the best twist, this movie stands tall among the other Saw films.
But a word of caution, not for the squeamish!
