Men Up (2023)
Light entertainment done well
How refreshing it is to watch a program set outside London and not be distracted by fake accents or characters shoehorned in to the script.
A well put together cast with a range of threads running through the main narrative. The film isn't going to break any records but it tells an interesting story from different points of view. It doesn't try to be anything it's not by going over the top with the storylines or time-period references.
The story itself is one that deserves to be told and the film is sympathetic to the feelings of people that would have taken part in the real life trials.
An enjoyable watch, which should be praised for concentrating on telling the story.
Gran Turismo (2023)
No Welsh accents in Cardiff apparently
It is an interesting story that could have been made into a decent movie but the characters and stories have all been seen before.
I didn't know the details of the person that won the competition and watching the movie I was surprised to see he was from Cardiff, a detail that should add to the narrative. For the movie not to have any clips filmed in Cardiff seemed odd. For there not to be any Welsh accents (perhaps a hint from the 1! Welsh actress) is incredibly disrespectful.
Gran Turismo was such a breakthrough, epic, game and its success was down to the attention to detail. The movie mentions that in the opening but match these qualities.
No Time to Die (2021)
Fitting end to a terrible series
Such a boring film from start to finish. Seemed to be written by someone that despised everything that had made Bond so successful and set the platform for them to make this self-indulgent rubbish.
Doesn't have the feel of a well thought out plot and I don't think the writers actually know what a lot of the stories and scripts were meant to mean. A string of tedious dialogue in the guise of clever writing.
Complete waste of having Christoph Waltz, and Ralph Fiennes could have been an iconic M if he was given a chance.
We shouldn't be surprised that the ending to the film was such an insult to the franchise that went before it.
The Beach (2000)
Well considered traveller story
It's one of the truest representations of travelling you could hope for in a film. The characters are familiar to the type of people that you can meet along the way, whether they're interesting, annoying, funny, scary or all of the above.
Parts of the film feel slightly disconnected from the story and take unnecessary turns but it stays relatively true to the book the story was taken from.
The contrasting scenery of Bangkok city and the island itself are stunning and depict the reason that the islanders have set up a refuge in such a beautiful location. The fact that they still rely on the civilisation that they left behind and can't prevent the madness reaching their paradise sits perfectly in the film.
Beyond Paradise (2023)
Poor follow on series
The show lacks the charm and storytelling of Death in Paradise. The episodes drag with uninteresting storylines and unlikeable characters.
It follows the usual template of a BBC show where their version of being inclusive actually means that the characters don't represent the location. I'm sure that they could have found some actors with true South Western accents and characteristics. Instead they have the same cast as shows set in every other location stumble over accents and not fit into their characters.
Having watched the first 3 episodes, it will be a struggle to finish all 6. Hopefully the episodes improve.
This England (2022)
Infantile
The title itself gives you an insight into how much thought has gone into this series. England is not Great Britain and is not the UK. Although the focus is the Prime Minister's reaction to COVID, which was primarily restricted to England, his decisions on this impacted the whole of the UK, and other matters, eg Brexit we're certainly not England-only.
It was also a series that didn't need to be made. His tenure should have been investigated appropriately and not made into a TV series based on real events. It understates the terrible decisions made and the impacts it has had on individuals and the economy. No mention either on how contracts were handed out.
Pointless series that seemed to be researched from memory.
