Leave the World Behind (2023)
Great characters, beautiful shot composition, ok storyline, abrupt ending
Leave The World Behind is a bit deceitful in the nature of it's title, it shows an autonomy that is not present in the story, the main characters never leave the world behind, rather the world leaves them behind.
After a cyber attack induced blackout, 6 people are trapped in a rural house, isolated from the outside world with little information on what's happening, only that something is going down and it looks bad.
The drama created in-between the characters is fantastic, you can feel the perspective of every character as the distrust builds up and comes down, as relationships are built. There were only very select moments where if elt something was out of character.
This drama is amplified by the incredible direction this film is given, the shot composition is briliant, moody and perfectly timed, giving off the right feeling at the right time. Also with perfect pitch is the sound direction, which is quite deafening at times, but captures perfectly the experience of the characters, as if you were hearing it yourself.
Something that also deserves a passing comment is the symbolisms present in the film, the warning signs from nature, i never knew deer could be so terrifying! It also wasn't lost on me one of the first and most blatant warning sign, a huge ship crashing onto shore, named nothing less than the most famous deer hunter "White Lion".
Now the one thing that brought down my rating is the ending, there were still some loose strings that needed to be tied up which they left open, i would normally be fine with an inconclusive ending, especially since the characters arc where close to done and everything was walking smoothly to a wrap up, but it seems as if they didn't have time to record the last 3 or 4 scenes and had to release the movie with an, although fantastic, incomplete final scene, which was quite a bummer.
All that being said, it's a pretty decent and incredibly imersive film, solid 7.5 i would say.
Baby Driver (2017)
Perfect action, awful movie
This movie gets your eyes glued to the screen, the action is blood pumping and beautifuly crafted, the score, cinematography and special effects come together to make a movie where the only thing keeping you in the movie is the fact that it's beautiful and has some witty lines
The acting is by no means bad, but that cannot help that the carachters felt superficial and underdeveloped, not to mention plain stupid, but the movie just says they're "crazy", obviously that level of sheer dumbassery should be considered a mental illness at this point.
Not to mention that the storyline is just not that engaging and the conclusion felt underwhelming and like a betrayal
If you want something to watch that is sweet to the eyes and ears, this is a good pick, if you want something with an engaging storyline turn to another movie.
Inside Job (2021)
a shame it got cancelled
It's not a masterpiece, but i would definitely recommend it, it's decently original, the animation is pretty nice, has some interesting characters and it had a promising storyline going on, it's pretty good and definitely one of the best adult cartoons out there ( given the competition it isn't very hard to be one of the best, but it still deserves some recognition for being what it is ).
But i think it's one of those shows that lands for some people and doesn't land for others, although i enjoyed my watch and felt pretty entertained throughout it all it was very dependent on the fact that my sense of humor aligned with the show's sense of humor.
An overall 7.5 but i rounded to 8.
