Lakeview Terrace (2008)
Just...WHY?
Look, I get it, ALL actors like to work; all actors WANT to work, and if your agent called you and said, "Hey, they want you for this movie and guess what? You'll be starring opposite SAMUEL L. JACKSON!!!!!". You'd be, like, WHAT????? Hang up and the first call would be to your MOTHER. "Hey Mom, GUESS WHAT????". And she'd be like, "WHOA!!! My baby is in a movie starring SAMUEL L. JACKSON!!!!!". So there you go. I still am left with the questions; WHY? Why was this movie even made? Seriously. What's the point? And second: HOW? How did they (whoever) get this script read, and actually accepted by Mr. Jackson? He probably likes to work as much as I do, BUT he probably has more financial obligations than I do, too. Maybe the maintenance fees on his Park Ave apt have gone up? Don't know, but I hope his check and all the checks of all the other actors successfully cleared.
Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind (2022)
Really a Disappointment....
SO looking forward to this doc, and it's such a disappointment; Granted, some great concert footage, and unlike a lot of other docs, we get to see complete or nearly complete performances of the "Killer" in action. The problem is, it just turns out to be superficail and ultimately dull. I'm halfway through, and find myself going, "okay..and..so?". JLL, to my mind, is a very interesting character. Not only one of THE architects of Rock and Roll, but certainly one of its most dynamic performers ever, and obviously a huge influence on all who followed. So where's the story of that? All we get is concert footage and clips of him telling people that he had a lot of self confidence. But I think there's a deeper story here. They barely touch on his private life, his marriages, and in one scene we hear he "shot his bass player in the chest.". Excuse me? THAT'S not worth a follow up question? Just really surprised and disappointed that the film-which, BTW was directed by Ethan Coen, and produced by Mick Jagger-just ends up being superficial, and light weight. I learned way more from his Wikipedia page, and found IT much more interesting.....
Malignant (2021)
Brilliant and original. A masterpiece
I'd give this movie way more stars if I could, and my fervent hope is that those who haven't seen it, and read these reviews, will completely disregard the naysayers, and WATCH IT. This film is like "The Sixth Sense," in that, once you get the "trick," or the "secret," you'll be compelled-like The Sixth Sense-to watch it again; upon first viewing, things really didn't make total sense, and I thought it was another schlocky slasher film. Not even close. As another reviewer has said, once you get to the 3rd act, things start to be revealed, and the puzzled pieces start to fit. It's much like Wan's other masterpiece, the first "Saw" film, which demanded a second viewing once all the cards were turned over. Watch this film, go with it, then you'll be compelled to watch it again. Wan is brilliant, and has created one of the most original horror films in quite some time (Plus, the babe from "Peaky Blinders" is the star, so, there's that too...).
John Wick (2014)
so....am I understanding the plot line correctly?
New to this franchise, and thought I'd start with Numero Uno, and since most of the sequels are streaming, I'll enjoy the series. Love Keanu Reeves, for his minimalist acting (some would argue minimalist talent). He seems to have found the perfect vehicle for his craft. So, but here's the issue (and I alway think about the writers' P. O. V. When developing the script). Wick takes on the ENTIRE Russian mob because...they stole his car and killed his puppy? That's it? Okay, I get that he's grieving over the loss of his wife, but seriously? Punks randomly steal his car, not knowing who he is, then plot to take him out because of this mistake? Why not just ring his doorbell, return the car, ask for forgiveness, and go have a cheeseburger.
Somebody Somewhere (2022)
I DON'T WANT IT TO END, EITHER....
As the title of another reviewer said, but I'll go one better: I don't want to WATCH ANOTHER EPISODE, because if I do, it will inevitably bring me closer to having no more episodes to watch. Maybe it's just my own oblique, dark sense of humor, but this show is simply amazing. I happened upon it from the Guardian, online news source as a favorite show of 2023, and took a shot. It's kind of like Apple products, something you never knew you needed, and then you don't know how you ever lived WITHOUT it. I'm in turn jealous, envious and inspired all at once. I laugh, and cry simultaneously in each episode. When was the last time anyone could say THAT about a show? Bravos to all involved.....
A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)
Definitely not as bad as everyone else says...
So, here's my 2 cents: this is a terrific movie; excellent scrip; the acting is SO much better than the original (sorry, Heather, Johnny). The lighting, special effects, mood and pacing are excellent; really dark (as it ought to be), and twisted (again, as it ought to be). The problem (and it's a BIG one), is that ironically, Freddy ruins the entire thing. Maybe I'm just used to Robert Englund (and let's face it, who can top him?), but the guy playing Freddy just simply blows. No style, no class, no frights whatsoever. I blame partially the director, who could have PLEADED with him to put some personality into the role (who knows? Maybe he did, and this was the best the guy could come up with). I found everything about the film intriguing, spooky and engrossing, until HE shows up. And since Freddy is one of the baddest of the badasses, this makes the entire film...uh...crap. Here's an idea: take the same shooting script, same actors, pay R. E. The 10 million he'd likely want, and re-do the damn thing.
