We're All Going to the World's Fair (2021)
best film ive seen all year.
I will preface this by saying this film resonated with me on an incredibly deep level due to how accurate it was in its portrayal of teenage isolation, depression, and need to fit in. Don't go in expecting ghosts and goblins, this isn't really a horror film as much as it is a gut wrenching trudge through what happens when society forces our most vulnerable to feel like they need to fit in. The main actress had an incredible performance and although there aren't many other characters they all felt real. This is certainly a film made for a very specific audience, and considering i cried multiple times by the end of its short runtime i believe it certainly reached it.
Little Demon (2022)
a generic try hard
This is the worst animation I've ever seen in a series, it's incredibly generic with godawful shading, but ignoring that the writing is bland, the characters are relatively good, and the sound design didn't jump out either direction. I will note it is very try-hardy, with constant gore and swearing, and full nudity which did admittedly catch me off guard, but it was a very quickly fading gimmick. This isn't really worth a watch as it is just an amalgamation of every other adult animated series of the past 5 years. This might have some promise, but I kinda doubt it is making it past one season.
Nope (2022)
far from his best work
This was a departure from pelees usual horror in a more thriller/action direction. Don't go in expecting fun kills or good scares, this is a pretty slow film very with very few horror elements and a boring bbge. The chimps movements are very odd looking, but other than that the cgi is excellent. Acting is alright, but the costumes are kinda distracting honestly. It leans a bit too heavy on jokes for me but to each their own. Get Out and Us were much better films, but i've never much cared for aliens so could be a bias on my end. This was by far the most straight forward project by him, i'm not much of a proper critic but even i got the message in the first like 10 minutes.
Safe House 1618 (2021)
unpolished gold
Don't go into this expecting a blockbuster. This is absolutely an indie movie, but it isn't trying to hide it. The acting is shooty in some places, the main antagonist's costume is awkward, the color grading is bad, and the changing aspect ratio is sometimes distracting. Yer, in spite of all that this was a very enjoyable film for me. The comic relief isn't overly relied on the way a lot of other modern films do, the costumes are beautiful with the exception mentioned above, the vfx are competent, the chemistry between the sisters is good for the most part, and the script has a lot of tension. While far from perfect, this is a very enjoyable watch, especially with friends, but do be weary for a pretty harrowing rape scene about half way though.
A Stalker in the House (2021)
boreing, generic
It seems like this movie had a 27$ budget, its the most generic hottot plot imaginable, the cinematography is uninspired, the colors and editing are distracting, i just don't get why this was created.
