Invictus (2009)

Inspirational and Powerful
24 December 2009
This is what I love about Clint Eastwood's films. In my opinion they're not made to be action blockbusters, they're not made to break records in gross revenue; they're made to inspire and educate. "Invictus" tells the story of Nelson Mandela trying to unite an oppressed and divided nation through the South African rugby team. I have to say that the football is not the most engaging piece of work in the film (this is coming from a rugby player and avid rugby fan), but it's the themes derived from this film that make it worth watching. Forget everyone that criticizes Morgan Freeman, he was exceptionally brilliant, one of his best performances to date. The film's title is derived from an old English poem, and it's connection to the film's story only strengthens the true message of one's strength, and him/her fighting for it, to help not only him/herself, but others in the process also.

The Cove (2009)

Powerful, disturbing and will make you want to take action
28 November 2009
Words can hardly describe how powerful this documentary is, and the lengths to which human cruelty can extend to. Louie Psihoyos and his team infiltrate a secret cove near Taiji, Japan and expose a brutal instance of animal cruelty. This film opens your eyes to the truly devastating fates of thousands of dolphins, who are slaughtered without remorse.Being an animal lover, and my dream to become a zoologist, this film has really inspired me to be active and do whatever necessary to protect the beauty of our planet. Alongside Ric O Barry, Psihoyos is able to clearly point out the error of these marvelous creatures in captivity, and how they deserve to be free, just like any other creature.

If you are one of those people that see my ways, then you'll be affected deeply too to take action. Forget the damn critics, this isn't a Hollywood blockbuster, this is a way of life for us and what we've become...what we've turned into.

Support the cause to stop this.

District 9 (2009)

masterpiece in sc-fi, shot with subtlety and intelligence
20 August 2009
To be honest, I first had very low expectations of this film. The first trailers I saw of it didn't interest me very much. However as I found out more about the film, my interest rose. The hype for the film also rose. I waited each day for the rating to show on IMDb, and finally it came. Top 250 in it's first few days. I had to watch it. And I was blown away. On a budget of $30 million, the effects and direction were brilliant. Better than the garbage camera work of transformers 2. Shot with subtlety and a believable plot, it will rise in the ranks for top sci-fi films. I was nervous about Neil Blomkamp, haven't seen really any of his works, but now I believe he will rise as a director. I praise him and Peter Jackson for this movie. Well done.

Brilliant
17 July 2009
There are a lot of things I would like to press in this review, but I'll try to keep it to a bare minimum. First off I knew that from the beginning that the tone of the film would be more darker and serious. And I loved that, as most of the previous films hadn't captured that. Yates brings his skills to the screen directly, and with Kloves writing, everything worked out great. The acting seemed more solid, a credit to Yates and I would like to name a few who I believed were tremendous, Felton as Malfoy, Radcliffe as Harry, Gambon was much much better, Rickman was superb and Broadbent pulled off an excellent Slughorn. The visuals were excellent, particularly the cave scene where Dumbledore casts the fire. And most importantly, it was very close to the book. Although It would have been better if more scenes closer to the plot were added, such as the battle at Hogwarts, but reading about why it was cut, I felt it was a good enough reason. So all in all, I was still happy with the end result. The score really did bring out the emotion in the film, particularly at the end. I believe that it was the combination of Kloves's writing combined with Yates directing, as the previous HP film had a different writer, and there was a different atmosphere. Overall, a great film that stuck close to the book and will very likely thrill the audience.

Critically Overrated
27 November 2008
I thought that this movie was going to be spectacular, what with the episodes and story lines, I thought it was a sure thing. Boy was I wrong. It's like the writers just made up everything on the spot and just animated it. The storyline was just pathetic and could've been so much more. The characters were very different compared to the TV series. Sure there were a few laughs, but I was very disappointed. Bart acts so much different,Homer was dumber than usual, and he's only funny when his "dumbness" is average,Marge was just about the same,as was Maggie and Lisa. The ending could've been tonnes better and I just wish the way the story was introduced was the same as the TV series. Oh well.

Critically underrated
8 October 2008
This movie in my opinion is critically underrated and for that matter it is a superb movie. The first movie in the anacondas series was so pathetic that I hoped the second would be much better, and I was right. An orchid with a unique chemical that can transcend ones life is being protected by bloodthirsty anacondas and those that are looking for it are thrust into a battle for survival. The acting is great and the setting is even better. The reason this movie is so underrated is because it may be inaccurate but movies are made to entertain and are in a world of their own and unless they are based on true facts, they shouldn't be compared to real life situations and for that reason,I rank this movie as a superb adventure/thriller that will be enjoyed by many.

Lost (2004–2010)

I am lost from watching lost which in my opinion...is lost
30 September 2008
I started watching lost from the beginning of the series and believed it to be a great TV series. However as the show progressed,I became more and more confused and only one episode explained why they were on the island.Every week I waited anxiously, hoping that the makers would shed some light on what the heck was going on.My fellow watchers agreed with me when I said that the film makers were also lost as every episode didn't make any sense and started it's own new story. When the show stopped broadcasting I gave up hope and then when it started to broadcast again, it was delayed once more by ridiculous story telling.

If you have nothing else to do and just want to lose yourself in this everlasting TV series that lives up to its name literally, then this is the show for you. Just don't get caught up in it too much.

Blood Diamond (2006)

a damn good movie presented with a powerful truth
30 August 2008
The first time this came out I was desperate to watch it.The trailer was just awesome and there was a lot of hype about it.Never actually going to the cinemas to watch it,I bought it on DVD with high expectations, knowing how good Djimon Hounsou,Leonardo DiCaprio, and Jennifer Connoly are and with Edward Zwick in the directors seat it was a sure thing. And I was just blown away by how good it was! The acting is superb, the setting is great, plot is just awesome and don't even get me started on the effects for the battles as they were just great.I absolutely loved the ending to the movie as the emotions combined with the music and cinematography created a stunning effect. I would also like to add the main point of how this film depicts the suffering of the people and how many lives it cost to produce ones wedding ring. It is the moral duty of everyone in more fortunate countries to understand the brutality of the world they live in, and what we must do to stem it.

Triumph of the human spirit
21 June 2008
When I first got this movie I was never bothered to watch it. I first heard of it from my cousin who said it was "so damn good". I never watched it for two months but when I got seriously bored I just decided it was time. And boy was my cousin right. This film is damn good. Andy Dufrene is accused of murder due to circumstantial evidence which results in him being sent to shawshank. There he meets Red and his mates. Over the years they bond and share a powerful friendship. This film tells the triumph of the human spirit, and how hope is a good thing. The acting is top notch, direction and cinematography brilliant, and the soundtrack empathizes the film like no other can.

I seriously recommend this film to those that want to see a brilliant masterpiece.
