The Brides of Dracula (1960)
Cinematic conversations
Hammer Studios made money from the 1958 film Dracula. The sequel came two years later. Best of all, Terrence Fisher remained in the director's chair. Plus, Peter Cushing agreed (for the second time) to play Van Helsing.
Yes, yes, the only one left out was Dracula himself, namely Christopher Lee. I understand that many movie-goers are angry. They all wanted Christopher Lee, and they were only treated to a blond guy (David Peele) who didn't do the bloodsucker role justice.
No one promised that Dracula would appear here, after all this movie is about the so-called Brides of Dracula. The problem is something else. Hammer Studios has indeed abandoned the script (this is a particular franchise we're talking about). Since the first sequel.
Even if you take "Dracula's Daughter" (Universal's first "Dracula" sequel), for all its flaws, it makes Hammer's "Dracula's Brides" a knockout. There's so much muddy nonsense here that it becomes very frustrating for Cushing.
A Million Questions. Take the initiative. Girl goes to one place, abandoned by her coachman, goes to another with a stranger. With gritted teeth, you can forgive (although I'd rather sit in a pub than run through the woods afterwards). My complaint is specifically directed at the Baroness. What is wrong with her? What was she thinking, keeping her child in chains?
If you are on her side (taking the girls there) then don't whine, don't say anything to them. Well, if you're against it, take a stake in your hand, hee hee hee. It's all a bit over the top. Why did the main character fall in love with him so quickly (vampire charm, I guess). Again I repeat, why is she a vampire, didn't Dracula bite her when he had time. She also said it in passing, like she was dating a bad friend. Okay, find out for yourself.
And the worst part is the dialog, the stupid dialog, the endless dialog. Anyone who saw the original movie remembers that there was movement between Dracula and Harker from the very beginning. Here the vampires appear in the second half of the movie. Boring.
Oscar Wilde (1960)
A beautifully made film in the best BBC tradition
Wilde. The title of the film suggests the direction of the plot. Oald can be translated from English as Wild. And the story of the film begins in the wild, wild American West, where simple fellows quickly solve complicated problems. Don't shoot the pianist, he plays like he knows how (C). The film is about the wild side of a creative, highly skilled man, the famous writer Oscar Wilde.
From a free-spirited, wild America, the film takes us into the sophisticated interiors of wealthy English homes, where we must conform to the etiquette and sanctimonious morals of the Victorian era. This setting leads to a desire to appear a decent man in the eyes of society. Oscar Wilde tries to forget his wild side. He marries and has two children. It can be seen that he was not 100% homosexual.
Throughout the film we are reminded of Somerset Maugham, who, as he said, was 25% in love with women and 75% in love with men. It seems that a certain femininity in a man increases his sensitivity and sense of aliveness. However, this does not mean that all creative men are homosexual. Nor does he claim the opposite.
Intouchables (2011)
he best stories are those that life itself writes
The old saying goes: "The best stories are those that life itself writes." Director duo Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano have managed to tell a tragicomedy based on the true story of a poor young Arab from the French ghetto and a crippled businessman, as fate binds them together in an unexpected friendship, even though they really have nothing in common, be it their social status or their outlook on life.
The charming tragicomedy The Untouchables has heart and brains above all, completely free of clichés about showing compassion for the disabled and other disabled people. The film rightly makes them, in Philippe's person, feel as human as anyone else and conveys all this in a humorous way that often borders on disarming honesty. And it's the seductive atmosphere in particular, created by the excellent duo of Omar Chai, who always seems to have a new joke in his pocket, and François Clouse, whose facial expressions and voice alone masterfully make the film a success. The film also touches on other issues that continue to dominate French society, such as unemployment among immigrants and juvenile delinquency, and among these it is important to criticise modern art, which in 90% of cases borders on childish nonsense, but which has been praised by critics as utterly brilliant.
In the end, he created a life-giving, witty, funny and charming explosion of a mix of drama and comedy in the most effective proportions, and The Incorruptibles was a near-perfect film for any audience and certainly one of the best French films of 2011!
Casablanca (1942)
Dreams of America
Another embarrassing gap in my cinephile biography is the now only seen legendary Casablanca by Michael Kertitz, which started the cult of Humphrey Bogart in American cinema and paved the way (along with Cukor's Gaslight) for the then young and little known Ingrid Bergman. However, Curtiz managed to create something more than an acting film: Casablanca became more than a symbol of America, a concentration of the dreams of European spectators who dreamed of escaping somewhere from the brown plague. Shot exactly 80 years ago, the film could be seen as a utopia, an oasis of freedom in the middle of a desert of Nazi terror. It is not the film itself, but the location of most of its scenes - Café Ricque, where immigrants (primarily the French) from Europe, who flooded the capital of Morocco during World War II, flocked.
The owner of the cafe, a cynical businessman, pretentiously maintains his neutrality in the middle of a major war. Humphrey Bogart's typically self-assured performance, then.
It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
It's a wonderful life
It took five minutes for tears to flow uncontrollably. Here's how to live a happy life, the recipe for happiness! There is no greater meaning to life than that! Families, friends, and children. This is what happiness is all about. I enjoy my life very much. Providing good things, helping others, and loving people is all that matters - no matter how rich or famous you are.
Despite James Stewart's impressive portrayal, the truth will always remain. He is worthy of emulation in his role - I'm not going to say acting, I can't help it. That bitter sob, that pure smile, that fierce despair and unexplainable hopelessness, that deep love for family and friends? Here we are... Life is like this...
There are times in the film when tears well up. There is nothing better than living a wonderful life! I want so much to say to my family and friends: I love you! When you are in your parents' arms, you want to cry...
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
New old acquaintances
In general terms, explaining to you why this production line is rubbish is a thankless task. I won't sound credible to crowds of teenagers, and they'll snicker at me anyway.e anyway. My dear readers, I am going to share with you what this film is about, so you may wonder whether it is worth watching again. It is unfortunate, however, that the box office agrees.
