An Education (2009)
Too poor for a best movie Oscar contender
Characters not developed, poor script and no plot twist. Nothing really happens at this film, all characters around Jenny are dull, no one offers perspective to what Jenny plans doing. The so called playboy offers nothing more than a lavish lifestyle and a fancy car, but nothing else. And you keep on expecting something revealing about him, but nothing happens. His friend and partner starts showing signs of confrontation as he gets more and more interested in Jenny...but nothing happens. Jenny's young pretender shows up now and then, but decides not to do anything and goes back home to catch up with his homework as if realizing his being part of the movie wasn't worth the audience time. Jenny's mom is only a piece of furniture on stage (and so are Jenny's friends at school), not a single line worth sharing with the story. And when the school's principal is offered a chance to explain what a difference can make to keep in school, nothing, absolutely nothings comes out of her mouth. The script always gives too much detail as if feeling the audience would never be able to read through lines. So save your money for this is a closer than ever to a TV film you would ever find for a best movie Oscar contender. And I thought Crash would be Hollywood's rock bottom pick for best movie.
Conversations with Other Women (2005)
Not as moving and subtle as "Before Sunset", but...
I just saw this movie at the Ficco Festival in Mexico City, a little bit surprised to notice it's dated back to 2005. It hasn't been long since I saw "before sunset" so I found "Conversations..." somehow similar. Acting is fresh, but the setting couldn't be any more dull. However, it really makes you think what's been like to be 40 and convinced what you've done with your love life is the right thing...or not. I'd say the dialogs are more realistic that those from the other movie mentioned above, since they seem more from your next door neighbors (more of a Brit movie vibe in the movie, although I'm not sure about the origin from the writers and director). The pace sometimes slows down, but in the end, you'd like it to last longer, so you can solve more clues. I wish their story had been a more complex one, I suppose.
Go see it if you like romantic movies...and have second thoughts about your own love life.
