Love Aaj Kal (2009)
Avoid at all costs!
With all the hullabaloo surrounding the Love Aaj Jal, the question is does it deserve it all not? In my personal opinion, the answer is no! After Kambakkht Ishq, this is the second film that has all packaging and no substance. It's hard to believe it's Imtiaz Ali who has given films like Socha Na Tha and Jab We Met agreed to direct a film of this sort.
For a start, all the actors in the film get no scope to perform. Watching Saif Ali Khan in Love Aaj Kal gave me a déjà vu feeling. It seems like Salaam Namaste and Hum Tum all over again, expect that this is worse. Those films are actually good, but this is bad. As for Deepika, again, she was good in that crying scene towards the end. Otherwise, the role did not demand much from her as an actress. Giselle Monterio is wooden, despite given a role that only required her to smile and move her eye-lashes. She still manages to look cute, but her attempt to dance is horrendous. Rishi Kapoor is wasted. Rahul Khanna is neglected to the backseat.
Overall, there is nothing new in Love Aaj Kal, expect for the 'Aaj' and 'Kal' part! Otherwise, I suggest you take a pledge to never watch this film!
Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic (2008)
A Decent Entertainer
Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic is similar to films like Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke and Marry Poppins. The film basically offers nothing new unless you didn't watch these two films you could go ahead and give Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic a try.
After films like Hum Tum and Fanaa, it was quite disappointing from Kunal Kohli to come up with an ordinary product. Although he manages to extract good performances from the child artistes, he could've come up with a better storyline since its nothing new.
The songs are just about average; Lazy Lamhe stands out amongst the rest of the songs and the music video is well-shot, although too sensual for a kids film.
Saif Ali Khan is good and fits the part perfectly. Rani Mukerji is cute as the angel, but her role is not very demanding. Ameesha Patel is remarkable as the airhead bimbo. She looks sizzling in Lazy Lamhe. Rishi Kapoor is good, but his role is not very demanding, again, for an actor of his seniority. The child artistes are excellent, especially Rachit Sidana.
All in all, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic mainly belongs to the four kids. A decent entertainer! Kids will probably love it.
Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007)
A good thriller
Despite the fact that the movie was promoted as a comedy, the film is a physcological thriller with a few comic situations. Priyadarshan does a good job as a director. In comparison with his previous films, he takes a leap as a director by making a movie with a genre of its own.
In my opinion, Bhool Bhulaiyaa is way better than the original movie, Manichithrathazhu. Probably because of the technicians have improved since then.
Akshay Kumar does his usual comic act, and he's funny here as well. Shiny Ahuja hams, but is good in parts. The last 45 minutes belong to none other than, Vidya Balan. Throughout the movie she doesn't have much to do but the steals the show with her superb performance towards the climax. Ameesha Patel looks ethereal and is effective in a small yet important role. The supporting cast are first-rate, especially Paresh Rawal, Rasika Joshi and Manoj Joshi.
The songs are good; Labon Ko is easy on the ears.
All in all, Bhool Bhulaiyaa is a well-executed movie, though lengthy in parts! Time-pass!
