Origin (2023)
The Green Book is much better
Going into the film without much prior knowledge, I do enjoy the the beginning of the moive. However, as i watch longer, I couldn't shake the feeling that the film was primarily about the Black Lives Matter movement but disguised as something else. The way this theme was woven into the narrative felt somewhat manipulative, and it left me feeling uneasy, to the point where I almost considered stopping watching. While the movie seemed to aim at addressing broader international issues, it ultimately focused heavily on Black Lives Matter, which felt like a hard sell. The movie is like a really good written essay but lack a persuasive thesis. I think film likes the Green Book are much better than this one. Despite this, I did value the film's depiction of historical injustices, which kept me finishing the film, but i did fast foward last 15 mins. The performances by the cast were good.
3 Body Problem (2024)
Finally, a captivating science fiction piece from China
I haven't read the books, but I'm thoroughly enjoying the story so far. It's refreshing to discover something Chinese with such a gripping and fast-paced plot, especially since they're often slow and clichéd, like a B movie. This feels truly original. I haven't found any parts of the show boring; it's one mystery after another, keeping you hooked. While it might not reach the same heights as 'Game of Thrones' or 'Westworld,' it's definitely worth watching. The first two episodes vividly depict the horrors of Chinese history and the fervor of Maoist nationalism. With the current situation in Hong Kong, all the hostilities directed towards the West or Japan and a director from the region, this TV show could serve as a cautionary tale against history repeating itself in China, adding an extra layer of dread alongside the alien elements.
Expats (2023)
The good old days in HK
This show has a serious mood; there's no humor or excitement to get your heart racing. However, it does shed light on expat life, especially from a housewife's perspective, which hits close to home for expats like us. Reminding us of the good time there. It's heartbreaking to see everyone leaving Hong Kong now due to all the chaos. Such a fantastic city, and let's hope this show won't end up being the last historical record of its finest moments. The camera work is a letdown, though. It feels too confined and doesn't capture the true essence of modern Hong Kong's awesomeness. This episode clearly is just sets the scene for the story. If you're not into expat life or Hong Kong, it might be a bit boring. Farewell, Hong Kong.
Vinland Saga (2019)
Top anime for sure.
The plot is on par with Titan or even Game of Thrones. It's one of those shows that had me completing season 1 in just 2 days. This animation brings something different compared to others. It's another show that stands as good as some of the top-rated movies. The Japanese truly know how to craft compelling stories, consistently raising their standards. While the animation might not reach the heights of Titan or Demon Hunter standards yet, I'm confident that with growing popularity, we'll witness some impressive action and battle scenes. The music is also exceptional. It's hard to determine which is more closely adapted to history, The Vikings or this? Nevertheless, it's undeniably a must-see anime. I'm eagerly anticipating season 2 now.
Knock at the Cabin (2023)
Without any bias, I believe this film deserves an 8
This film is very controversial as it portrays two groups that are currently in conflict in our real world. One of these groups is religious. People from both groups may give it a low rating without truly judging the film. In my opinion, the film does not deserve a 10/10 rating, but I would give it a 10 to boost its average. Without any biases, the film still deserves an 8. The film is well-researched. As a teacher, I would even use the first 8 minutes of the film to teach a new kindergarten teacher how to deal with kids. As someone who is not part of either group, I enjoyed the film and found it entertaining throughout. The acting of the child actor is particularly impressive, earning her a 10/10. Dave Bautista is also becoming one of my favorite stars. While his acting style remains the same, his films are consistently entertaining and never dull or low-quality. I'm excited to watch his next movie. This film is a blend of the styles of "Nope" movie directors and Johnny Depp movies."
Sniper. The White Raven (2022)
Not the best but a very good sniper film
The movie is a bit slow pace first half, but it did illustrate what was going on in Ukraine. The soldier gears are one of the best i have ever seen, especailly the sniper camouflage. It really makes you want to play some modern warfare or metal gear solid. With the war between Russia and Ukraine it really adds a lot of atmosphere into the movie. It is not as good as Enemy at the gate or the America sniper, but as a sniper movie fan i definitely would want to watch it at least 2 more times. I beg they don't have a lot of bugdet but visual is above par too. Hope to see more Ukrainian film like this after the war. Victory to Ukraine!
House of the Dragon (2022)
Boring....I actually fell a sleep in #3
Can't stand it at all. None of the Characters are appealing, none of them is attractive. The princess and the King.....man. Just can't compare to the old dragon princess. I hope she will grow old later and the king will die soon. Violence or sex, none. The fighting horrible. The new lord of the rings, i would say way better, but i don't get why people rate this much higher, for that i will rate it a 6, usually it would be a 7. One more episode i will save my time for something outs. Starting to this is going to be dissappointing. The 1st look of all those characters already make me feel they are trying to find some mediocre actors and actresses to play the shows, now the feeling continues. I was thinking at least the story or the CG would be exciting, not at all after a few scences of showing off the dragons, excitement are all gone after #2.
Prey (2022)
One of the top Predator films
For predator fans, this one can't be skipped. Even my daughter who never seen any violence movies, horror or very little sci-fi. She actully likes it. My only complaint about this one is that it is not violent enough. A lot of parts are blur out or just skipped. I'm wondering would there be another version. We can see a lot of Assassin Creed 3 too, making me wanted to play it again. I hope the next one will have better actions and more blood. The action is about 7.5/10, if they used a Hong Kong choreographer for the action, this maybe as good as John Wick. Amber also did a good job beening the main character. So glad the franchise can be back.
The Boys: The Instant White-Hot Wild (2022)
So disappointed!
It played just like an afternoon soap for my granny. Keep making things up to continue. I would rather they have a villain from outer space than this. The whole character of Butcher just collapsed. I feel like I watch for nothing, one of the plot that make you so furious. Not going to watch season 4 for sure, %$#@^ !!!!
Basutado!! Ankoku no hakaishin (2022)
Can't believe this get a remake
I 1st saw this when I was an elementary kid, got a peek from my brother collection. After that i was into magic and myth. Too bad they didn't have detail descriptions of the monsters and spells in the animate. That would be so awesome. Thx Netflix for bringing back Spriggan too. The story is very original to the comic, except the nudity. If it is 18+, I think they should have it. The fight scene wasn't the best nowsaday, still very behind from demon slayer and Sword Art Online is better. For me i can't stop watching it after the 3rd episode. If they can finish it till the end, it certainly make my bucket list. The last episode is as good as the comic. Again, thx Netflix.
Hustle (2022)
For the nba fan, other then that everything is predictable.
I love Sandler, wishing for a great flim again. But still just turn out so so. The story nothing interesting. The only good part is there a lot of NBA stars in it. The one thing i really hate about this flim is the camera angle. It is really close up, always cutting part the top part of the heads out. And it really bad for all the basketball action too. If not for the nba fan i'm sure it can't get a 7 at all.
The Northman (2022)
Don't expect this is an action film
Don't expect this is an action film. More like a bloody drama and there is no epic battle. Only the actors and actresses are great, everything is a little bit better than mediocre. I wouldn't watch it in the theater. If there is nothing to watch while wanting to have a classic drama and good actings. This would be a good pick on stream. No suprise in plot too. The last 10 mins, I just wanted the movie to end, because we kind of know how the ending will be. "Hurry up and finish it! So I can move on" that's what I am thinking at the end. However i really can't call it a waste of time or anything bad.
Ambulance (2022)
The casts is great but the story absolutely failed.
This movie is quite comparble to the worst Fast and Furious films. A lot of car chases, explosions, polices running around with guns. 1st quater of the flim is okay, after that the plot becomes ridiculous. For example, 2 helipoters would chase the ambulance in a really close distance. I feel like the guy who wrote this script hasn't really lived in our world for quite awhile. He pretty much does whatever he wants without any common sense. I think I said the word "What" more than 10 times during the 2nd half of the film. I feel really bad for the good actors and actresses for the film.
