Chain Reaction (1996)
Why did I waste my time?
I was really bored and browsing Disney Plus when I found this film. I knew it was a 90s thriller with Keanu Reeves and that's all I needed to get on board. However, I now see why this film had such a low rating. Yikes, this film was just boring on top of being just a bunch of Reeves and Weiz running from location set piece to location set piece. Not a whole lot of added substance to be found. However, what can you really expect from a 90s action thriller that was buried deep within the bowels of Disney Plus haha.
Saint Maud (2019)
Interesting Critical Look at Religion
Saint Maud is a weird little film. At once a poignant look into the mind of someone coping with trauma through religious fanaticism, and also a very slow dragging movie with not enough to really keep my mind focused on its message.
This film is a very impressively technically executed film, with a very compellingly played lead in the form of Morfydd Clark (Maud). I just wish that there was something a bit more to it in substance. Maybe I'm a little bit biased when my favourite film of this year is Everything, Everywhere, All At Once, which is anything but quiet and brooding like Saint Maud.
I would still say this film is worth seeing and I do want to check it out again to see if my opinion changes upon a rewatch.
Basic Instinct (1992)
Murderous Bisexuals and Icepick! Oh My!
I've been on a bit of a Paul Verhoeven kick since first seeing Starship Troopers, so naturally this film was immediately added to my list. After seeing it I can safely say I do have mixed feelings.
Firstly I'm pretty positive that we aren't supposed to like or root for any characters in this movie. This movie is about people being bad, along with it being a thriller of course. I think what carries this film in order to make these despicable people worth investing our time in, is the very compelling plot and impressive acting chops of the cast.
Michael Douglas does a really great job at playing the emotionally unstable cop with a questionable moral compass. However, Sharon Stone really steals the show with her performance as Catherine Tramell. She really gives a very fantastic balance in her acting of false vulnerability that is masking a cunning sociopathic killer.
At the beginning of the film it leads you to believe that Catherine killing her lover Johnny Boz is a very cut-and-dry case. However, the way the plot is woven leads you to second-guess this constantly until the end when all is revealed in the final shot.
Although I do take some issues with some of the treatment of female characters within this film. Mostly seeing how it leads to this idea of the psychotic lesbian trope found in Roxy, it overall is a pretty solid film with some minor issues which do show its age.
Zombieland (2009)
Way More Fun Than I thought it Was Gonna Be
So I really am not a fan of Zombie related media... Like I pretty much hate most of it. So why did I watch this movie?
To be honest I was super bored and I had recently been really interested in checking out Woody Harrelson's filmography. When I saw this film and that it was also a bit of a road trip movie I decided to give it a chance. And... I was pleasantly surprised.
The characters were more compelling than I thought they would be, rather then annoying. Each of them had the perfect balance in negative and positive traits in order to create a very fun dynamic between each of their interactions. I especially found Columbus and Tallahassee's dynamic very fun to watch.
One of the funniest sequences in my opinion was the one with Bill Murray playing himself. Such a great little nod to his acting career and taking the mick out of him in a playful way.
All in all this film was a fun zombie romp which was character focused in a way that made me appreciate the zombie genre a little bit more.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
Better Then Expected
For a Marvel Movie I was pleasantly surprised by MoM. It had some pretty amazing visual effects done by the team handling VFX and some really impressive cinematography. You can definitely tell this is a Sam Raimi film from the way the film is shot, the comedic style and the amount of actual horror and gore added. I also found Wanda to be a very compelling twist as the villain of the film, although her motivations confused me a bit considering how the WandaVision show was left off (however, I might have missed an after credits sequence, so that could be why).
Overall the film was very enjoyable, although lacking in some areas of dialogue and plot related issues. These have always been a consistent issue with Marvel Movies so I'm not surprised MoM has the more of the same. Looking forward to seeing where this film leads next for the MCU.
Also super excited to see the first glimpses of X-Men related content in the MCU with Charles Xavier's cameo (he even had the yellow chair and they played the 90s animated show opening motif when he came on screen! My nerd heart was down for this pandering for sure).
The Lost Boys (1987)
Ultimate Vampire Movie IMO
This film was everything I wanted in an 80s vampire film. From the beautiful setting to the unforgettable musical score, there is little to hate in this film. It's not to be taken seriously in my opinion, and should be simply enjoyed for its retro flare and fun adventure into the world of the creatures of the night.
The Hunt (2020)
Missed the mark
I went into this film blind, not knowing the political discourse which had occurred when this film first came out. I have to say that I'm pretty disappointed overall. This film was a jumbled mess, which valued a "sticking it to the lefty's" attitude over an actual entangling plot and characters.
All the character were caricatures of what liberals and conservatives are like and that made for a very limited discussion and look at both liberal and conservative politics. In a lot of the scenes with the liberals it felt like I was watching a scene written by an alien who had liberals described the them by someone like Alex Jones. The same goes for some of the conservatives.
The film also had confusing pacing and action that didn't really engage me enough for me to even care about what was going. Needless to say I've seen way better films, both about action and politics. If you want a film with better action and a similar premise go watch Ready Or Not.
Creep (2004)
Underrated
Being trapped in the subway all alone with someone/something sinister is one of my irrational yet very real (for me) fears. Having taken the subway super late at night when I'm basically one of the only people there. It's very creepy and sometimes the people out there late at night can seem sinister. Love that this film encapsulates and brings to the forefront this fear so effectively for the first half. Second half is a little less intense, once you figure out more details about the "creep." Still a really solid horror movie though, and super underrated.
Mortuary (1982)
Had to give it a an extra half star for having evil Bill Paxton
This movie is a pretty standard '80s slasher. However, I really enjoyed that they just ramped up the camp to 11 and committed to the cheesiness of the slasher genre. It was also really fun to see Bill Paxton in one of his early roles going ham. His performance was perfectly over the top and pretty iconic. One of the 80s horror romps I would recommend to fans of Paxton and his wacky performances.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Got to be my favourite movie of the year
This film was an explosion of surrealist comedy mixed with hard-hitting commentary on a realistic issue which can occur in the lives of many families.
I loved all the characters and their journey's from beginning to end. The dialogue was really sharp and the strange non-linear storytelling was super effective.
In another universe I could have seen a film made around the same subject-matter which removes all the surrealist elements, but I'm so glad that the strange nature of this film was the route that they took. There is something truly special about films like this and I can't wait to get my own copy on blu-ray/DVD.
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)
Finally got around to another iconic queer film
I now understand why this movie is so iconic... it's got its issues with some transphobia and racism that knocks it down a few notches for me. But it's a very solid road trip and queer film. Happy pride 🌈
The Taking (2014)
Prob my fav found footage film
This was a surprisingly solid found footage horror mocumentary. It's underlying theme of watching a loved one slowly deteriorate due to an incurable illness is really well conveyed. Also the actress who plays Deborah is incredible when it comes to playing out the nuances of her character. I would seriously recommend this to anyone looking to have an interesting and engaging watch within the found footage and mocumentary horror subgenre.
Koe no katachi (2016)
Such a Special Film
This film ripped my soul out and laid it bare for me to see. The characters in this film are so deeply rich and complex, and the story is incredibly realistic and heartbreaking at points. In a lot of ways it reminds me of people and moments from my life, and I think a lot of others would feel the same about their own experiences. Anyone who hasn't seen this film needs to. It's a must watch for sure!!!
The Stuff (1985)
It tried to say something... A swing and a miss imo
This is such a weird film that is trying to say something about consumerism being bad. You'd get more comprehensive take on consumerism and capitalism from They Live! Still is cheesy fun though.
Censor (2021)
Might not be for everyone
An extremely solid entry into the psychedelic and psychological horror genre. If you liked Mandy or Hereditary you'll enjoy this. The homages to 70s video nasties is super cool and the cinematography is chefs-kiss.
Hatchet (2006)
Worth watching for the comedic elements
Some highly solid character actors playing in a pretty good slasher horror. A solid homage to the 80s slasher. Nothing special though, but still entertaining enough.
C.H.U.D. (1984)
Marv from Home Alone is one of the main characters in this movie... need I say more?
This movie is the best kind of B-Movie garbage that knows exactly what it is. It has a very muddled view of environmentalism in its primary message but what we are really all here to see are mutant cannibals. Would highly recommend because Marv from Home Alone kicks ass in this film.
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
Bland bread dried oats
It was funny seeing Nazi Elrond. However, there wasn't much to enjoy about this film. It was a pretty bland origin story which had an even blander ending. However, being familiar with Captain America's origins might have been why this film felt so predictable and meh to me.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Not bad for a Marvel movie
Was expecting this film to be another bland unoriginal slog, but was pleasantly surprised that it had some good comedic elements and a twist I surprisingly wasn't expecting.
The Avengers (2012)
Meh
This film had moments I liked, like any banter between Rogers and Stark. However there was a lot more issues with the disjointed comedy, unoriginal plot and predictable story beats. Overall I preferred the others films better.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
THIS movie made me cry
If I loved the first Guardians, this film made me fall in love with these characters and their adventures even more. I also LOVE the character of Yondu, so getting to see more of his character and his relationship with Quill was really fantastic.
This movie did make me cry like a little baby as well because of the way the relationship between characters was developed very greatly.
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Actually one of the best MCU movies
I really loved the found-family dynamics of this film, along with the plot actually being pretty decent for a Marvel film. However, the characters were what really carried me through this film and I loved pretty much all of them. Also the comedy was pretty funny and the visual effects were quite impressive. Gotta be one of my favourite Marvel movies.
Event Horizon (1997)
Underrated Flawed but Great Film
I wish there was some more added tension and not as much bad CGI. The practical effects were really impressive and the the way the shots were blocked, I just wish they'd done more of that. Also would have loved to have seen more backstory, but there is only so much you can put in a 95 minute movie. I would have loved an extended cut similar to The Abyss. I think it would have benefited from a longer runtime.
However, I really love this film regardless and young Laurence Fishburne as the main protagonist is really good in his role. I also loved the rest of the crew and their small eccentricities.
DragonHeart (1996)
Pretty Standard Fantasy Fair W/ Some Good Moments
Badly CGI'd Sean Connery dragon brought down the rating for me. Loved the human conflict between Bowen and Einnon a lot more. I wish that was developed more. I did love the amount of character actors I recognized in both minor and more prominent secondary roles (i.e. Pete Postlethwaite, Jason Isaacs, Brian Thompson, etc.). Also really enjoyed young David Thewlis as King Einnon.
Underwater (2020)
A Modern Day Abyss
A really solid underwater cosmic horror survival film in the same vane as The Abyss and Leviathan. With modern day computer CGI and practical effects it really makes the film impressive with its scale. I also love the similar vibes which Kirsten Stewart's Norah Price has to Ellen Ripley from Alien. It really worked for me and I could see her playing a version of Ellen Ripley in a possible Alien film based off her performance in Underwater.
