Daniel Isn't Real (2019)
Different kind of crazy.
The movie opens to Luke's childhood. His mom is having a fight with someone over her own mental health screaming that the pills don't work. To avoid the yelling and smashing of glass Luke leaves the house and winds up at a crime scene where multiple people were murdered. At the scene is where he meets Daniel. To Luke, Daniel is real and is his best friend. When Daniel feels threatened by Luke's mother he tries to get rid of her. Luke's mom is ok but tells Luke he must lock Daniel away in the dollhouse.
Time skips to the present when Luke is in college. When he goes home to visit, it is revealed that his mother's mental state is even worse than before and he releases Daniel.
Daniel starts to take over Luke's life. He even takes over Luke's body. When Luke tries to lock him back in the doll house he is unable to do so.
The movie takes you down a path of what mental illness may feel like to some people. However this is not the case. The movie circled back to the murders at the beginning of the movie and you see where and why Luke met Daniel.
By the end you learn some of the origins of Daniel and see how Luke stops him before the darkness takes him too.
Warnings: flashing lights, attempted suicide, murder and suicide.
Genie (2023)
Be careful with your wishes...
A typical genie Christmas movie. You can predict the majority of this plot. Man is to wrapped up in his work with a boss who exploits him. He misses his daughters birthday and the movie starts. Wife and daughter leave to her moms and leaves Bernard alone. The antique he tried to gift his daughter was actually the genies box enter Melissa McCarthy. With unlimited wishes he tries to make things right with his family again. It does get crazy with police, fire, and Tom Cruise movies. Like most movies, this one does have a happy ending where the family is back together. By the end you also find out what happened to Flora so there are no loose ends.
Smile (2022)
How is this up for awards?
I was so excited to see this movie come to streaming on Amazon Prime. The trailer for this had been so promising. Boy that was about the only good parts of the movie
The beginning has a very large build up. An overworked psychiatrist (Rose) sees a lot of patients. Before heading home she sees one new client. The girl who starts all of this. The new patient grabs a porcelain vase while Rose is calling for help. She then has a huge smile on her face as she slits her own throat.
From then on Rose is experiencing strange events and seems unhinged to those around her.
Rose and what I assume is her ex boyfriend and cop (Joel) start searching for answers as he is the only one who will believe her.
They find the one person who has been able to escape this cycle (think final destination). From that point on Rose's hallucinations get worse making her see people who are not there.
This wasn't scary, horror, or even a thriller movie. For most of the movie it is sad that someone is suffering from mental illness and trying to cope from the trauma of their youth.
Rose starts to see her mother at one point that turns into a "demon" of sorts. I guess this is the horror aspect.
The actors did a great job with what they were given but that wasn't a lot. There were 3 of us watching Smile and I was the only one to stay awake through this extremely long movie. It ends as you would expect.
Hannibal (2001)
Don't do it...
This came up as a free movie on AMC and I liked the original Silence of the Lambs so I thought why not. However this was such a disappointment. It jumps around so much. It introduced a former victim of Hannibal, jumps to Clarice, and shows Hannibal and a dirty cop in another country. It is hard to follow and stay interested in.
The movie finally ties together when Hannibal kills the people who were after him and hangs a guy. From there on out the movie was better that's why it is given 3 stars instead of 0.
Clarice and Hannibal at the end were the only parts that made sense to me. It followed what we know about the 2 characters. I wasn't surprised how he treated her or that she went after him.
The Curse of Bridge Hollow (2022)
How is this in the top movies?
Surfing through Netflix, I came across this title. It had the top 10 logo and said it is number 2 in movies today. This just goes to show how little new material is out right now.
Typical plot. Family moves from the city to a suburbs and the child doesn't want to move. Father forces his hobbies or likes onto the child ending up in a fight later. Daughter finds something in the attic with the help of a ouji board and sets this ridiculous movie into action.
The mother really has no role here other then to be ridiculed for her horrid baking. Father and daughter work together to fight the evil force and save their new town.
I wasn't looking for a scary movie by any means. I wanted a cute and funny Halloween movie. This was a total disappointment and a waste of time to watch. I viewed the whole movie to see if it would get any better....it doesn't so do yourself a favor and turn it off. I have seen worse this year so I will give this movie a 2/10 stars.
Hocus Pocus (1993)
Sometimes sequels should not be made...
I loved the original movie. I watch it multiple times a year. So I was so excited when they announced the sequel. I even bought a subscription to Disney+ just for this movie.
Boy was I disappointed. I get this is a family movie but it was like a movie for a small kid. Everything was way over done. There were too many musical numbers. Who sings as soon as they come back from the dead? Then Billy Butcherson has a new accent that he didn't in the first movie. I hate changes.
I will say that the special effects in this movie were good. The book was neat, the magic was cool. Had there never been a first movie this may have been ok but this was a very sad sequel.
Ghost in the Graveyard (2019)
No just no
Save yourself the mind-numbing 92 minutes it took me to get through this movie. This is tagged on Amazon Prime as "serious, frightening, suspense, and horror" to which this movie is none of those things.
It starts out as a typical teen horror flick with kids playing in a graveyard. Something happens and a child dies. This is the main even that the movie is centered around. Fast forward and the kids who were there are now in high school. From there the movie goes down hill fast. So many different concepts are then thrown together to where you just want to shut it off. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and tried to see if it would make sense at the end. Spoiler it doesn't. Do yourself a favor and just turn it off.
Devil in Ohio (2022)
Not what I thought it would be...
When I logged into Netflix, this limited series was a 98% match for me. I got excited thinking this would be a horror series but it is not. Apart from a few small scenes with blood there is no blood, guts, or gore. There is no real supernatural parts either unless you squint really hard. This is a girl escapes from a cult and finds a kindred spirit with a doctor who is trying to help her.
I gave this show a 9 because it was good and kept me intrigued. There were elements that were over done such as sibling rivalry, adoption, and finding yourself in high school. However, I liked how May (main character who escaped) was shown as both a hero that is so brave and a bad guy. The ending upset me so be prepared. It did end like you would think for the most part with the cult. It was the after with the family that I couldn't get over because who could do that to their family. The story was kind of open ended where it could be continued or it could end and you could walk away with no problems.
Overall this has been one of the better shows I have seen recently. While it is completely mislabeled it was worth watching.
Samaritan (2022)
Was it good or bad?
Was this a good or bad movie I still don't know. From the description of the movie on Amazon I would have never watched this. However I saw a preview for it at the movie theater and thought I would try it. I guessed the twist in the middle of the movie and honestly had a hard time watching the rest of it while paying attention. I personally would not recommend this movie.
Cast was well selected for the parts. The main kid is cute and doesn't overact his part. The villains you root to fail. Movie was too long for the plot in my opinion. Typical superhero movie. Wish the story would have told more of the story of the brothers instead of the quick background given. Great if you just need something playing in the background that you don't need to pay much attention to.
F9 (2021)
Exactly what we have come to expect from the series...
This movie is action packed like the rest of the franchise. However it does time hop often. We get introduced to Doms brother and from there you are back and forth from the past to now to explain where he comes from and the family history. Not a bad movie but we tied a lot of new people in and have some missing links at the ending. This either sets them up for the next movie or for another spin off. 9/10 just because it seemed too drawn out for me.
Takers (2010)
Boring...
The Amazon description of this was the actors names and that it was an action movie full of thrills and twists and turns. This should have been red flag. But I started the movie anyway. Very typical blah bank robbery and aftermath. I didn't make it to the end it was just boring.
No Time to Die (2021)
Really...
This was the worst bond yet. The beginning and story set up was the only good part of the entire movie. I rented this movie to watch with my parents who are huge Bond fans. They fell asleep during this because it was so boring. The end was the worst too. Don't pay to see this as it is not worth it.
