Serenity (2005)
Grade 'A' Speculative Sci-Fi.
Serenity is (I say this without hesitation) the best science fiction film to be made in recent memory. I'm a big 'Blade Runner' fan (Don't really like 'Star Wars'), so if you don't like being challenged when you watch a film, maybe this ain't for you. Being a Browncoat I am ridiculously giddy that Joss was able to reunite the cast and shoot this masterpiece. The fact that this movie didn't make as much money as many other films that were released around the same time speaks volumes to me about the poor taste and expectations of American audiences (They are so used to crap they crave it now). This one is for true film fans. People who enjoy a good story, great actors and a thoughtful vision of the future will be smitten. GO JOSS!
Crime and Punishment (1917)
Good watch for fans of Fyodors work
This is the only film that has somewhat captured the feel of Fyodors' book. Full of shadows, darkness, grief, and emotion through visuals, this movie can be a test to sit through for those not die-hard FD fans, but never a moment is wasted. I would venture to say that sound would only take away from this film, in the sense that it is easier to get the feel of what Dostoevsky meant by watching rather than listening. Read the book first. If you like it, and understand somewhat of what the author was trying to say (or ask), you will enjoy this movie. Try your local library if you have trouble finding this version.
