Mulholland Dr. (2001)
Why it deserves movie of the year.
What is Mulholland Drive about? Well, having seen it 4 times in the theatre, I can safely say that I know the answer to this question. Making such a statement is dangerous. If I tell the answer, then it might take away something from the movie for those who have not seen it. On the other hand, not saying it might give people the impression that I don't really know, but I'm trying to come off as smart. Let me just say this then. It's about dreams, expectations, ideals and ultimately, failure.
There is nothing like Mulholland Drive. The acting is flawless, as is the immaculate direction and writing. David Lynch is a true genius, and he operates in a realm that is not accessible to the average person, or for that matter, most people. Mulholland Drive is the freshest, most exciting movie of the year. It's rewarding, when you figure it out, and it's moving. It contains every known genre, and it possibly even forges a new one that is as of yet unnamed.
If this movie does not win then it will be a great tragedy. A movie like this comes along once every fifty years. It's an immediate classic, and I can't see how anything can possibly surpass it, unless it's something that David Lynch can find in his pond of ideas.
Hotel Room (1993)
Nothing says genius like Hotel Room.
I just read the other review that is posted for this film. I agree that the second episode is fairly terrible, but I would like to add that David Lynch did not write or have involvement with that one. The first episode is quite amazing, but it's the third one that I personally like. It's intelligent and it's got some of the best acting I've ever seen. Crispin Glover is amazing in the episode, and I think it's unfortunate that both him and Lynch didn't receive critical acclaim for being a part of such an amazing project. The third episode is not accessible to everyone, but I urge everyone to at least see the first one.
Wild at Heart (1990)
Why the critics have for the most part been wrong.
I'm going to make this short and simple.
Wild at Heart is my favorite film. Aside from stellar performances, and a really moving, creative and intelligent script, this is a movie that defines cool. Nicholas Cage's character, Sailor Ripley is as cool as his namesake, and if you don't like the name, you probably won't like the character or the film either.
Critics have agreed that the film has it's moments. For me, the film itself is a large moment, with smaller, powerful moments inside it. Overall, it's a clear example of genius. I would recommend this to anyone who has a stomach for extreme sexuality, violence and fantasy.
There is nothing in the same league as Wild at Heart.
