End of the Road (2022)
Ups and downs but worth a watch
I understand some of the reviews about cheesy script but what you do have is some good acting, and an enter story; and who doesn't want to see Queen Latifah kick some tush?
I thought that as a family they had a great dynamic. It felt like a usual family who loved each other and drove them crazy at the same time.
The story does have some elements of predictability but that doesn't stop it being entertaining. It's probably the script that lets it down the most but cast do what they can with it.
It's more of a not sure what to watch and don't want anything that's too much mental effort kind of film but if yo.
A Haunting in Venice (2023)
A new favourite
I didn't have high expectations as not personally a big Agatha Christie fan (nothing wrong with Christie, just not my usual cuppa).
The setting in Venice already engaged me with the striking sets perfect for creating a striking yet foreboding atmosphere, but it was the amazing cast that drew me in. They were well balanced, extremely talented and all had their own demons.
Brannaghs accents seemed a little wobbly at times..I'm sure he sounded more like 'Inigo Montoya' than a Frenchman at times but I can happily forgive when everything else was so beautifully done.
I look forward to the next but not sure how they can do better than that cast.
Emily in Paris (2020)
Offensive stereotypes take away from some good characters, acting and beautiful fashion
There are some wonderful characters played well that really grow on you and are quite endearing. For that reason I stuck with it, and because this isn't too heavy going.
The fashion fix is there, with a mix of the extremely outlandish and extremely chic and elegant.
Unfortunately, what let's the show down is the disservice to the French, English, Americans, Ukrainians, Chinese, women, men, LGBTQI, No-one escapes the stereotyping on the show that is there consistently throughout. I can't say I was a fan of the utterly pointless nudity either. Such a shame.
Perhaps the stereotyping is deliberate (truly
No-one comes out well) to make a statement but unfortunately I doubt it.
When Missing Turns to Murder (2019)
Finally a show that is respectful and educated
I have tried multiple similar shows recently and, as a victim of past coercive and abusive relationships I have struggled with how misleading and disrespectful the shows can be. To the point of damaging for those who may know someone in an at risk relationship.
Too often the victim is blamed or questioned for not leaving sooner. An incredibly offensive question when you truly understand how these 'relationships' function.
I have just watched episode 3. I don't want to add spoilers but I would say thank you to the family of Natalie, the professionals involved and the show creators. This was well done. My heart goes out to all experiencing or witnessing this behaviour. Don't just tell them to leave. Get professional support. It could save their life.
Meet Marry Murder (2020)
Trigger warning: professional ignorance on abusive relationships
Commenting here only to warn those who have been in any form of abusive relationships.
Unfortunately, of the two episodes I watched, there was significant ignorance in the professionals interviewed in their understanding of abusive relationships. In particular, why the victims stay. They appear to be looking for logical reasons rather than understanding the manipulation and the extremely damaging effects it can cause.
This series appears to be for titillation rather than education or to better the poor situations so many find themselves in, through no fault of their own. Go ahead and watch but please don't use this as an example of how victims should be spoken of.
Victor/Victoria (1982)
A visual and musical delight to warm the cockles.
I loved this film when I was growing up and enjoyed it just as much decades later.
The cast are second to none and I can't get the music out of my head, in a good way! So many great moments performances and a wonderful story with plenty of humour and fun thrown in. Wonderful art deco and beautiful costumes too.
I sometimes watch it just for the scene with the waiter with Toddy and Victoria but there are so many wonderful, funny moments, I have a new appreciation each time I watch it.
Lesley Ann Warren in the role of Norma is beautiful, funny and makes me smile every time. I hope you enjoy it.
A Kindhearted Christmas (2021)
Sweet film but that is not how you do crackers!
A lovelt film with the real spirit of Christmas feeling. It's nothing mind-blowing, just a warm, feel good easy to watch film for a cosy evening.
Was also good to see Garth again, she's actually looking more beautiful than her younger years and the rest of the cast are great.
However...Christmas crackers are to be pulled with someone else, it's part of the fun. And traditionally, whoever gets the large part keeps the gift inside..although usually you make it fair and give any extra you win to someone else.
So put your feet up, get a cup of your favourite hot beverage and enjoy. Merry Christmas to all a good night.
Mary and Max. (2009)
An incredible, charming film I recommend to all
I had no expectations on this film. I heard it was vaguely based on a true story and that was it.
It starts off quite humorous with a childlike innocence, supported by the nature of the claymation (I think that's the right term but apologies if not)
We swiftly move into the reality and challenges that life can bring as time moves on, and the comfort of having someone out there who listens.
There is much humour and an ending that always brings tears, but not in a way that the film leaves you down.
It is truly beautiful without being sugary sweet.
This Is Going to Hurt (2022)
Good acting. Disgusting attitude to patients
Probably quite triggering for many and a lack of tact for those who have truly worked in those conditions and the trauma so many patients have gone through. It does nothing to address existing misogyny which we don't need shown as so acceptable as long as there's some humour. I don't recommend it.
