Imawa no Kuni no Arisu (2020)
It feel off hard...
I really loved the first season of this series. There was tension, good games, good mind games and characters that were really well done. The episode 3 is probably one of my favorite series episode
Unfortunately, a big part of that was lost in season 2... Even tho the tension is still here, the games are overall worse than previously. But the biggest problem was the characters. Almost no development for the main cast compared to season 1, and for me the biggest throw off is the unkillable characters. How do people survive hours of bleeding out with multiple stab and gun wounds. The episode 7 of season 2 is probably the most frustrating episode i've watched ever, not in a good way at all.
1899 (2022)
Wake up!
From the creator of Dark, another beautiful series will arise. This first season really set the tone for yet another success from them. The visuals from 1899 and Dark are quite unmatched in the series format, it's incredible how every shot is just beautifully mysterious.
One of the main themes of this series is the international cast, which all speak different language. I believe there is English, German, French, Spanish, Danish, Polish, Cantonese with a bit of Dutch and Japanese. It really set the atmosphere for this immigrant ship going to America. Plus, every actor is amazing.
As for the mystery, there is still some holes yet to be answered, but I truly believe they will be answered in the future seasons.
Unfortunately, some of character developpement felt a bit rushed for some characters and the plot being a bit too predictable at times makes this not a perfect show like Dark, but it could definitively get to that level in the future.
The Imperfects (2022)
Fun teenager show
I went into this having kinda low expectation, and I was pretty surprised to be honest. I find that the general flaws of teenager shows weren't there or were very mild compared to others.
The concept is pretty cool but nothing revolutionary. Kids experimented on when they were young, but they now end up with powers, or imperfections.
The actors are actually pretty good, Morgan Taylor in particular showed a really interesting character and she managed to bring a humorous, senseless, but also emotional character to live beautifully.
The show has a nice balance between humor, suspense, emotions and action, which is always nice to see, often shows go to far in some directions and they get dull really quickly.
One other thing that surprised me is the visual effects. They are very well done even tho Netflix as a history a cutting budget for this type of show, and special effects often suffer. That comes at a cost of 'tranformation' scene being often avoided, but I gotta admit, with good camera work and ideas.
Would personally recommend, I definitively found it better than what other reviewer said, but I definitively see how someone could dislike/get bored watching this series.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (2022)
Video game adaptations getting good!
Yet another awesome video game adaptation in animation format by Netflix (at least streamed on Netflix). This show was already so ambitious from the start since production began before the video game it is based on was released. The fact that it was animated was already a great sign since so many live actions video games series have been terrible, so I was hopeful (especially since I heard from it not long after Arcane).
I watched a couple Japanese anime before and they were good, but nothing memorable I'd say. But Edgerunners blew me away. The art is truly magnificent, they truly nailed Night City in the anime art style. The character design is so great, every character feels like its unique entity even though the producers could have gone the easy route and made characters very similar to each other. What distinguish this anime from the pack for me is his emotional hit. No other anime and very little shows have hit me has hard in their finale than Edgerunners.
Unfortunately, it was designed to have only one season, but I'm also glad they aren't taking the huge success of the show and aren't ruining it. Anyways, awesome show, a must watch if you ask me.
Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities (2022)
A quite good horror show
I personally have never watch Guillermo del Toro's work before, but I've heard many times of it so I had pretty high expectation. And it was fine.
To be honest, some moments were very slow, like way to much. And not like good slow, it wasn't building anything (The Viewing comes to mind). In other stories, I felt like there was so much potentiel, and then you see it get wasted generic horror. The plot can sometimes be incredibly confusing, making the story hard to enjoy personally.
But not everything was bad to be fair. The actors were excellent, the monsters' designs were generally very good and special effects are quite good. Here is my ranking of the episode, from best to worst: The Autopsy (3), The Murmuring (8), The Outside (4), Pinkman's model (5), Lot 36 (1), Dreams in the Witch House (6), Graveyard Rats (2), The Viewing (7)
Athena (2022)
This is a pure cinematographic skills flex.
Let's be honest, there isn't much realistic in Athena. I understand that police brutality can cause tension, but to the point where an entire hood is taken as a fort so police has to attack it as a medieval fort might be a little extreme. But... if you but realism aside, this movie is actually quite good.
The best part of the movie is definitively the cinematography. The movie is simply beautiful, and the number of long sequence shots is really high, and they are done to perfection. The introduction to a movie hasn't got me as excited as Athena's intro, it cut the blabla and goes straight in with a crazy sequence shot, probably the best in the whole movie.
In terms of scenario, it's fine. Nothing revolutionary, just back and forth from the hood and the police, both using tactics seen often in cinema. Actors are fine too; they get the job done, but no impressive performance.
Yeah, this movie is a cinematographic skills flex, and tbh I found it enough to carry the whole movie. Would recommend, especially if you speak french.
Hush (2016)
Nice quick movie
Recently, I've been curious of the previous work of Mike Flanagan before his Netflix series, so i started with this movie. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from it, being an intruder killer movie, and they generally have a pretty bad reputation. That's why I haven't watched a lot of them.
But the little twist makes the movie quite good, that being the fact the woman being attacked is deaf. This changes everything since the viewer can see (or hear) things that the woman cannot. Or on the contrary, the sound is cut off so we have the same feeling of stress and pressure that she has, making tense situation even more scary.
Everybody also seems to have a decent brain, so there aren't really any annoyingly dumb characters. There might be the killer that likes to play a bit too much with his food, but considering he has such a big advantage, it's kind of justified.
I personally found this movie pretty good but take this as someone that hasn't seen many horrors killer film, especially intruder ones.
(also, it is shown that the book the woman wrote is Midnight Mass, this means the series as been in Flanigan's mind for a long time, pretty cool)
The Midnight Club (2022)
A good teenager show
I've seen all series of Mike Flanigan at this point, and they were all really great. Hill House is probably in my Top 3 shows of all time. Anyways, I was really interested in this show knowing it was made the one and only. And then I saw the critics...
My opinion: Yeah it's a teen show. Is it for everyone, no. Is it a well-done teen show, I believe so. It covers many theme (a lot that have been seen in other Mike shows) like death, afterlife, immortality, homosexualité vs religion, cults. To be honest, it as kind of the same feeling as Midnight Mass, just not as impactful and as well-done. Actors are fine, it's though to find young actors much better than that.
Each episode, one of the kids tell a new ''horror'' story, most of them aren't really though, but they are still great. They often have a good message with them and they include part of the kids real life. They gotta take inspiration from somewhere. On thing that did bother me though is the number of story including the future and time travelling. I think like a third of the stories have some kind of time traveling mechanic in it, it was getting kind of old.
The scenario is pretty good, I just which they included more the old man and woman in the story because we know who they are at the end of the story, but they aren't connected to the real story line. The show leaves you with a bunch of unanswered question.
Sooo, I found the show great. Definitively better than most teenager shows, but it's a teenager show at the end of the day, so not for everyone.
The Mole (2022)
Surprisingly good!
I was originally planning to hate watch this series because it was in Netflix top 10 and I was sure it would be like any other tv reality show, boring.
And... the first episode hooked me. I watched like 5 episodes until 4am because I couldn't stop (probably because of the cliffhangers). The concept is simple, each episodes have games played in teams, if they win the game, they had money to the pot. The catch is that a mole was chosen at the beginning of the show, and their goal is to lower has much as possible the pot money without getting caught. That's where sabotaging happens. After each episode, a quiz is taken about the mole, the person with the most wrong answers is eliminated. This goes on until there are 3 players, including the mole. The person that has the rightest answers about the mole wins the pot.
The games are fun, the elimination method was cool and there were little events between the actual big game of each episode so that the show wouldn't be too repetitive. The cast was ok, some were a little boring, some you would just simply hate, others you would root for, but the fact that there is a mole makes this way more interesting. Are they being nice to make others believe there in for the pot or are they genuinely hiding in plain site. Some players are also doing mole behaviors because it's better for them in the long run. But aare they doing it to keep their place in the game, or to lower the pot money.
It's great, I would recommend.
But... I'm actually curious on how the mole works. What are the advantages of sabotaging the mission, are they rewarded with money at the end for the money that they sabotage? If so, what's limiting them to just sabotage has much as possible since they cannot get eliminated from the show? Is it something like they get a part of the money they sabotage, but for each of the last contestant that identifies them, they lose a part?
Cobra Kai (2018)
Great Overall
This show is a great package to be honest. It's fun, it has cool actions scenes, it as wholesome moment, it as tension. It really is the perfect family friendly show. Yes it can be often corny, yes it can be cliche (a lot), yes some of the actors aren't so great (especially the younger ones), but it kind of works anyways.
This sense of competition throughout the seasons makes you want to see the finale of the season so badly so you can finally see if the good guys beat the bad guys, classic story. The first seasons made it very tough to say which dojo was the bad guys, which I really like. Everyone could choose to root for who they want.
The last few seasons made it very clear Cobra Kai are the villains, which I also get. Turns the show into eliminating the evil karate from the valley. And really, I found that the show was taken to a whole new level with season 5. Idk why, but I feel like I enjoyed way more than the other seasons. Anyways, this show is great.
Monster (2022)
An Inside Look Into One of America's Sickest Mind
In this mini-series, you follow the events of the life of Jeffrey Dahmer, probably one of the most famous serial killer in America's history. This is a slow (a bit too slow some times) and horrific tale of a twisted mind. The main actor perfectly plays the role, you totally believe he could be Jeffrey Dahmer.
The events are not shown chronologically, which could be confusing for certain people, but I thought it was a great creative decision considering some of Jeffrey's killings are not as interesting as other's (still absolutely horrible and victims shouldn't be overlooked), they did a great job at making the whole show interesting. The episode 2 and 6 hits you particularly hard.
Ultimately, this show is great, but it also helped Dahmer in one of is fantasy, being loved, being remembered, being seen, and for that, I cannot feel good about watching this series.
Gisaengchung (2019)
Simply WOW
This movie is pretty much perfection. It makes you go through literally every emotion imaginable. You will fear, you will laugh, you will be happy, you will be devastated, you will be shocked. You never know where the story will take you next. The actors are phenomenal. The scenario is simple, soooo simple, yet so effective. You follow this family struggling to make enough money, but one day, the son is able to get hired by a rich family to teach English to their daughter. I would tell you more, but I really don't want to spoil anything, not the slightest thing, because I want you to enjoy the movie as I did, knowing nothing. Just trust me, it's worth every second.
This movie is the one that got me into Korean films and series, and I'm so glad I gave it a shot.
Dark (2017)
An international masterpiece
This show... this show... Who came up with it, because no sane person could do such a complex, intriguing and most importantly well written story. You cannot miss a single second while watching because every frame is important. I can still remember the beauty of the first season, the incredible plot twists. I wish I could rewatch it for the first time. I thought they could never top it, the story was going to turn in circles, they hit the bottom of the concept etc, etc, etc. Season 2 and 3 proved me so wrong it's crazy. This definitively one of the series I'm gonna have to watch for a second time in the future, possibly in another timeline, with my 21 years younger self.
Breaking Bad (2008)
Will never be forgotten
Breaking Bad has marked forever the tv shows industries, and for good reasons. Insanely good character development, great and well-placed action scenes, an inside look into the mind of a narcissistic, crazy, lost chemistry teacher who has found the thrill of life in being the biggest drug producer of New Mexico. Walter White is terrible, but we root for him, we root so hard for him it's crazy. Gustavo may be one of the most interesting and terrifying antagonists in television history.
Often with Tv shows, the acting isn't the best, often not to movies level. It's not the case for Breaking Bad. It has by far the best acting I've seen in any Tv shows, no one come's close (for the shows that I've watched).
This show marked internet, it marked the world, it marked history.
Arcane: League of Legends (2021)
This just set a new standard for animation series.
The best animation you will find in any series. And is probably better than any animation movie, even though it's 6x longer. I cannot say it enough, it is true art. It is very comparable to spiderman in the spider verse in terms of art style, but I'd say it's way better because of the much more natural frame rate of Arcane + Piltover and Zaun are a much more interresting place and NYC.
Right now, I've only talked about the animation. But let me tell you, the story is no different. A torn family broken by unfortunate events, a political fight of classes, a inside look on mental health, a non-bland antagonist with actual motives, corruption and revolution. This story has everything, and everything makes sense. They manage to create a coherent setting in such a short amount of time.
The characters... oh god the characters... every single one is incredible. You empatize for the maniac terrorist who has gone mad because of traumatic experiences, you root so hard for viktor, the poor zaunite genius who wants to improve the life of so many but loses himself in the process. The people aren't black and white, everything is meaning full.
I might have gone a bit too fanboy for this review already, but I don't care, so here's more: The fight scene are truly incredible (the bridge scene is preinted in my mind), the music is perfect to set the ambiance for the scenes that have it (especially the last one omg), the 3 episodes a week is probably the best format to realise a series to accomodate for the binge watchers while still keeping the hype for several weeks. Did I say that it was gorgeous ?
It took 6 years to make the first season, and it shows. Can't wait for season 2.
Naui ajusshi (2018)
The best k-drama
Let's face it, K-dramas probably have the worst synopsis, and their story doesn't seem to be the most interesting, but they always surprise us. My Mister is no different. We follow this man who meets a mysterious young lady with huge financial and personal problems through work. They will slowly form a unusual bond that will go through many hard challenges.
With a synopsis like this (I shortened it a lot, but still) I would've never watched this k-drama if it didn't have insanely high praise. But let me tell you, it's deserved. No other drama as made me feel as much emotion as this one, and to be honest, k-dramas haven't it the same way since I've seen this masterpiece. Even though I am quite new to k-dramas, I have a feeling this one will be my all time favorite for a long time.
The House (2022)
A truly unique piece
I went into this film with pretty much no idea what was ahead, and let me tell you, I was not disappointed. The art style with the stop motion works perfectly and makes it a quite special art piece in itself. The animation is just splendid.
The film is divided in three short stories independent from each other, appart from the house. The first one is perturbing, enigmatic, weird (a common theme in the movie). It introduces you to the house and the creator, who has strange motives. It's let's just the right amount of question unanswered so the viewer can make it's own mind on the story without losing you.
The second one is probably my favorite one. Just a really cool story, and also probably the weirdest. The morphology of the characters and their totally absurd actions constantly catches you of guard.
The last is probably my least favorite, mainly because it's much more normal, but it's still very enjoyable and beautiful. Tbh if you don't like the art style and don't really admire it, this film is probably not for you.
