Mother of the Bride (2024)
I suppose it's something to watch . .
If you like Lifetime movies, you'll like this one. If you like investing yourself in a movie, then this one's not it - it's not very good - there's no grit, the characters are rather plastic. Any trauma or issues between characters are VERY forced, some seem to just take a left turn but in reality are truly non-issues, they go nowhere. It's hard to get invested in the movie.
Benjamin Bratt would be the standout in this movie - but, again, it would really play best on lifetime. Teenage girls might like it, and little old ladies, perhaps. I did stick it out, all the way to the end - the resort they're at (if it is a resort) is nice.
Spacey Unmasked (2024)
Well, I have mixed feelings . . .
As I listen to the men willing to come forward with their stories, I can't help but compare my own sexual harassment suffered by the hands of managers where I worked, especially in the 80's & 90's. I hear the same feelings from these men that I had and have, so I understand to a degree. The men were all hopeful of some sort of a relationship with Spacey that might aid in their own careers - quid pro quo, and many turned up again and again when Kevin called. Why? Most weren't dependent upon him for $ to pay rent, or buy food. Maybe I'm being unfair, these are just thoughts I have running thru my head. Maybe it's simply the celebrity that drew them back again and again. I can tell you, once one manager in particular grabbed me, I found ways to stay away and made sure to never put myself in the situation again.
Kevin Spacey is a great talent - I think most would agree. Based on his brother's input, his parents certainly weren't the best, the rape story is pretty damning and tragic, and the whole nazi perspective is overwhelming.
I am also surprised that he went after straight men, and that no one turned around a decked him. Again, is that simply celebrity - or should I say 'celebrity privilege'?
Ultimately sexual harassment is truly unacceptable - and in this case no one is a winner. Of course, I'm sure Kevin saw it differently, especially when a victim would return - and that would have to be the celebrity draw.
Bupkis (2023)
Better than expected - thoroughly entertaining!
I AM a Pete Davidson fan - not so much concerned with all his broads, but the one standup he did, where he talked about small hands and that he's been ruined for any other relationships because expectations are too high - it was simply hilarious.
I have been wanting to see this on Peacock for quite sometime, but just didn't want to sign up for yet another streaming service. Cyber Monday - they had a deal, I was so happy - just to get to see this ONE show.
This show is very entertaining - and LOADED with stars and comedians. I don't know how someone could NOT be entertained. As I'm watching, I find myself googling things that happen to see if they happened in real life or were added. Nevertheless, I love this show - It's done exceptionally well. From the first episode (OMG), and the wedding scenes with a young Pete - I wish there were more episodes. I think I'm going to have to watch it again.
Lessons in Chemistry (2023)
Maybe I should have read the book.
I have seen 8 episodes so far. This is a star packed series and is worth a watch.
However (you saw this coming), perhaps had I read the book, I'd understand the one major thing I question: the robotic acting of the main character. The first few episodes I was wondering if the character has a disability, like autism, which might account for the odd robotic behavior. Even in the 50's, intelligent woman didn't act robotic - I don't know that they ever have!
Still robotic in the 8th episode, but with a greater splattering of humanity. The storyline is good, I also like the various political themes throughout, they're mentioned but not necessarily shoved down your throat - they are definitely important and add a great deal to the story.
Psycho: The Lost Tapes of Ed Gein (2023)
What is the problem with the narrators?
There is some interesting information - but is it enough, and compelling enough to put up with the annoying older pontificating gentlemen and their monotone lazy tongue speak? Nope. I made it thru almost two episodes before I just could no longer take it. And then they intermittently throw in a couple of younger bloggers and commentors, who try to dredge up excitement for this "fantastic find
", but fall exceptionally short and then they look exactly as they are - a little too happy to be included in this pile of nonsense with no substance to add to the conversation. Not really worth watching.
House of Hammer (2022)
If only they could cut out the "vocal fry"
Dang, that Armie Hammer is so good looking - and not a bad actor - what a shame. The documentary is very good, interesting, and explains a few things regarding the headlines that cancelled Armie. In a nutshell, it's essentially Sodom and Gomorrah meets the Mafia. The photos of Armie's partners are truly terrifying. The fact that his Aunt participated and discusses her own childhood trauma makes it a worth while watch - that is, if you can get past the vocal fry narration.
(I blame Paris Hilton and the Kardashians for teaching an entire generation this ridiculous and incredibly annoying speech pattern.)
Kajillionaire (2020)
Very odd movie - yet also very good. . .
Poor Old Dolio, deprived of the basic human necessities, such as human touch, care and love. She's guided thru life by fringe parents who have her pay her way for everything. Hats off to Evan - I don't know how she made it through her performance without breaking down in laughter while playing such an odd-ball character. I have watched this move 4 times now - each time I notice something new.
All Creatures Here Below (2018)
Very sad movie BUT also very watchable
This movie is absolutely worth watching, and I liked it. The tale it tells is disturbing to say the least, but it's well acted, the story line is deceptive at first, but it is thought provoking. If you liked "The Virgin Suicides" you might find you like this - the story is very different, but the mood you're left with at the end is similar - it's sad, but it might leave you thankful. Sometimes sad stories should be told.
