Im Westen nichts Neues (2022)
Never felt war so intense before
I'm really a Film Nerd and I've watched many famous and less famous war movies, too. Until this Evening, the beach-sequene and the final of Saving Private Ryan was one of the most intense experiences I've seen on the big screen.
But what Berger and his teams show here is still incredible & and the most horryfying depiction of war I've ever seen before.
The violence makes you feel sick, there were really some moments I thought I have to leave the cinema. Shooting, Explosions, blood, cold, wetness, Tanks, flamethrowers and inhuman suffering. Meaningless suffering.
Yes, theire are some flaws in the Story, but Overall it works out fine. Music, acting and production design are phenomenal!
But the violience, I still can't believe it. Go watch - afterwards you'll definetley be pacifist.
8/10.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
10/10 for Episode 1 & 2
Breathtaking worldbuilding, great Storytelling (very mysterious and partly scary with well dosed shocking moments), great actors and even better costumes as in the original movies.
Especially (young) Galadriel is a great Performance. The actress really looks like a younger Version of Cate Blanchett - Amazon, but not just a cheap copy.
I really don't understand a review under 9/10 for the first 2 Episodes. I'm really looking forward for the next Episode - if they can keep this level the season will be a worthy successor for the triology.
And I think it would workout even more better on the big screen, but that's just my opinion.
The Batman (2022)
It's ok, but really no masterpiece
It was far too long!
And overall many great Fincher-Movies (Seven and Zodiac) have been copied (also Taxi Driver and ofcourse The Dark Knight)
Pattinsons hadn't the opportunity to develop his character in a way he would be able to.
And last but not least for me it wasn't really clear "what was the fu***** point" of the movie?
But set pieces, atmopsphere, soundtrack were fine overall.
So 7/10 are ok
A movie noboy needed.
Nightmare Alley (2021)
Average overall
Beautiful pictures and production design, gereat actors (especially Cate Blanchett) but a very, very boring story.
I had the impression, that in the first 45min nothing really relevant for the story was depicted. Or let me say: Nothing worth for 45min!
We've got some very intense scenes between Blanchet and Cooper, but overall it was just an average (and most times boring) movie.
If you're interested in the "Golden 20ies" then you may take a look.
Fear (1996)
Still entertaining!
It strives the trash, but never get really Bad. Entertaining acting by Wahlberg, Witherspoon and Peterson. It's by every Minute more and more thrilling and ends in an over-the-top climax. Characterization is dull Overall, but does it really matter when you get entertained that much? The music was great too, a really good "back to the 90s" OST.
A perfect thrilling summer movie to get with your girlfriend after some Burgers with Fries. Not more but also not less!
No Time to Die (2021)
Good conclusion - same level as "SPECTRE"
For me, the story of "No Time To Die" is pretty classically laid out. In parts it is very reminiscent of "The Spy Who Loved Me" and "On Her Majesty's Secret Service".
Craig plays Bond brilliantly as always, a rather laconic portrayal of the character (the oneliners almost always worked for me, which is probably mainly due to Craig's acting), but he gives it a particularly strong emotional depth compared to his predecessors.
I won't spoil anything else about the story, except to say that the film as a whole has to be regarded as an action drama rather than an action thriller. The ending really got to me and almost takes on the features of a Shakespearian drama. The antagonist and his right-hand man actually go down a bit, but work quite well in their roles.
The motivations of the individual characters were coherent overall, the story had a comprehensible plot and especially the first 2/3 of the film was quite exciting. In the last third it flattens out a bit, but then ends with an emotional bang.
For me, one of the biggest plus points: The technical gadgets and gimmicks.
In "Spectre", gadgets were brought into play again, but in "No Time to Die", at least for me, the child in the man was awakened again :-D It was simply "cool" to see how technology was used in the film.
Partly outstanding action scenes, an overall good and for me comprehensible story (in contrast to "SPECTRE" where I always found the "relationship" between Bond and Blofeld rather contrived and forced), a great soundtrack and a good acting ensemble. Only the look of the film was - despite fantastic sets - not quite as chic & classy as in "Spectre" or "Skyfall".
8/10 overall.
