talk about low budget
29 January 2004
I didn't really know what to expect from this movie except it obviously had samurais and there may be a lot of gore. Well after seeing it I was very disappointed that I payed $16 bucks for the DVD, because I felt rather ripped off (although I should be lucky that I didn't pay the $19.99 that I see it listed as in many other places).

The only "gore" in the movie is the beginning when some chick gets cut in half, but even then it's so damn cheesy looking it becomes rather pointless. I think it would have been better without the cheesy-looking mannequin. Other than that, we see a lot of blood, especially towards the end.

I give credit that the director does have ideas and his mind set in the right place, but the script and directing definitely needed a lot more work. The hand-held cam really wasn't doin' it for me and the dialogue was just horrible.

As for action, it is decent for its budget, but the choreography could have been executed a lot better. It doesn't look like they practiced much. I wouldn't recommend this movie unless you can get it for $5 bucks and have an appreciation for incredibly cheesy low-budget flicks. I gave this a 5.

Monster Man (2003)

surprisingly decent
29 September 2003
I was lucky enough to receive a screener for this from Lion's Gate and I went in knowing absolutely nothing about the film and actually found it to be a fairly decent watch.

Although it borrows from other films like Jeepers Creepers, TCM, and Joy Ride, it doesn't fail to entertain, but then again I'm a fan of cheesy horror flicks that involve getting lost on the road or meeting up with a strange family and their secluded house.

The basic plot is about a couple guys on their way to visit an old friend, but while on the way get run off the road by a freak in a monster truck. Hmmm, sound familiar? They end up playing a cat and mouse game with the trucker until the truth is revealed about the trucker towards the end.

This is a decent rent for those who just want an entertaining horror flick and have a lot of time on their hands. It's nothing original, but it does have nice effects and gore for a direct-to-video.

Decent

I saw this movie some time ago, hoping it was going to be as good as The Eye was, but I was greatly disappointed to see that the stories weren't very good and the scares were lacking. Don't bother checking this expecting another The Eye.

Dracula II: Ascension (2003 Video)

A little less than the first
12 March 2003
I wasn't really a fan of the first, so I didn't expect much from this film. The first movie seemed like a direct-to-video, which I suppose is a good thing since the sequels (like this) wont be as bad.

The whole movie is basically just the group of people studying Dracula and we don't get into any good vamp-action until the last 25/30 mins of the film. Jason Scott Lee's character is pretty badass and I can't wait to see him more in the next film.

This is a decent movie. Worth a rent if you liked the first movie, since it is a continuation from the first - literally continuing straight from how the original ended.

What a waste
11 August 2002
This is, quite simply, one of the worst horror films I've ever seen. I was so incredibly bored and the cover is so misleading. When I saw what it was that was actually inside the box I couldn't stop laughing. What kind of monster is that? I never knew someone could turn a part of the human anatomy into a monster until I saw this film.

The worst moment of the film had to have been at the end. That was one of the worst and stupidest endings I've ever seen. What the hell were they thinking!?

I didn't even bother to watch the movie all the way through. I was so bored and annoyed, that I fast forwarded through almost half of the film. I didn't feel like wasting any further of my time on it.

Stay away from this!

A decent sequel
8 June 2002
This movie was actually better than I thought. It had a decent story, some good effects, and some cool scenes, but overall it's nothing too special. It's a somewhat worthy sequel, but it doesn't live up to the original. Bon Jovi does an alright acting job and it was funny to see the guy from Family Matters play a "badass" character. The casting could have been better.

This is a good rent, but I don't think it's really worth buying. I have to admit the lead female vamp was pretty sweet though.

Actually quite good
11 March 2002
I was sent a screener of this film from the director and I wasn't expecting much from the movie, but it was actually pretty good. It had an interesting premise and there was a lot of interesting topics brought up about religion in this film.

It's pretty slow through most of it to set the character and mood, then really picks up towards the end. It's not necessarily scary, but it's a horror film on its own. The director has great potential and I'm looking forward to more of his work.

not that good
28 February 2002
I see a lot of people giving this movie praise, but I found the film to be rather boring. It was slow and confusing pretty much for the whole 30 minutes. It has a few interesting scenes, but nothing creepy or anything. The directing wasn't bad, but I didn't like how the camera was on certain people's face for too long. It then becomes kind of pointless.

Overall, the directing is good and the story is out there, but so much more could have been done to make it a lot more interesting.
