Ted (2012)
7/10
enjoyable enough - not sure reviewers understand
30 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
first off - this movie is billed as an R rated comedy so is evidently not for children, i say this as some reviewers seem to think they need to tell people this fact.

They also feel the need to explain that this film features profanity, drug use and 'choice' humour.

Again these facts were outlined in the advertising of this movie.

In question to reviewers claiming that the plot makes no sense. the world accepting a walking talking teddy bear and the jump from being a cute cuddly toy on the tonight show, to a pot smoking washed up bear.

What the movie is satirising is the fall of child stars - Lindsay Lohan, Danny Bonaduce, Amanda Bynes, Macauley Culkin and Britney Spears to name but 5.

Ted as a child had it all worldwide fame, wall to wall talk-show appearances etc. and then the world lost interest and like so many child stars he turned to drugs etc when the fame bubble burst.

In review it's an enjoyable enough movie ... not laugh out loud , but a nice concept satirising another.

The Catherine Tate Show (2004–2009)
didn't laugh once
23 January 2006
I sat through an entire episode of The Catherine Tate Show and did not laugh once. I thought maybe its a duff ep, i'll give her another chance. Again nothing.

Many have compared the show to Little Britain which has me in stitches, not because it is the same catchphrases over and over but because the characters grow and stay fresh. Granted Catherine Tate is a consummate comedy actress but a good actress cannot make bad material good. Sadly this is yet another example of a sketch show aping a tired format. Harry Enfield started character based sketch shows and the Fast Show continued the trend. The League Of Gentlemen introduced the sitcom style narrative to its characters which Little Britain has also utilised.

But do we really need another character based sketch show spewing out catchphrase after catchphrase. in my humble opinion all The Catherine Tate Show seems to do is say "look us girls can do exactly the same as the guys" why not do something different like the Smack The Pony girls did. A sketch show with (shock horror) different and consistently funny sketches week in week out. Big Train managed this superbly with very few (if any) recurring characters over two series.

Please can we go return to the non character based sketch shows at least for change in the schedules. Surely a chameleonic actress like Ms Tate would shine creating different characters week in week out rather than be stuck doing the same thing over and over.

Blackadder II (1986)
Why can't Atkinson do more characters like this
18 March 2005
Reading through the many comments on Blackadder i agree with the majority that it was an extremely funny and enjoyable show, especially once they had sorted out the main character from being a whiny no hoper with a stupid voice...

time and time again Rowan Atkinson has played characters like this and they are just not funny...someone has even suggested that Mr Bean is Atkinson at his best...

Balderdash...

Blackadder (series 2,3 and four) will remain a testament to great writing and performance...idiot characters should hopefully be forgotten to time.

Rugrats: All Growed Up Part 1 (2001)
Season 7, Episode 14
Not a good idea
15 November 2003
As a one off this show might have worked but to option it as an entire series beggars belief.

The appeal of the original show is that the babies are more clued up than the parents yet in a skewed naive kind of way (mispronouncing mundane things and making them sound fantastical etc.) or from similar innocent dream/make believe sections.

Now the kids are "All grown up" or pre-teens which with the high teenage pregnancy rate shouldn't really be seen as all grown up their is little to differentiate it from shows like Recess or All About Ginger (a show which is not thought of so highly i believe).

Either get some new INVENTIVE/ORIGINAL ideas for the original show or leave it as comedy gold in syndication. Scrap this rubbish and save money on animation cells.

Neon?
31 August 2003
Batman wears black in order to disappear into all-concealing shadows and so that he cannot be seen against a dark cityscape. How does the set designer of this movie think he can achieve this when the city and even the shadows are every garish shade of neon red and green under the sun.

His costume is a stealth decision not a style decision so we can do without the rubber nips as well thank you very much.

Also Re: the first comment on this User comments section. Fans of the comic and the animated series, usually 15+. Fans of the sixties show approach and Schumacher approach 11 or younger. Result the comics feature rich textured characters who have depth and can't be seen directly as either good or evil. Batman and Robin features shallow one-dimensional black and white heroes and villains, the reporter even brags that Gotham City has Batman and Robin to protect them, in the comics and the First movie for that matter, he is as big a worry to the police authorities as the crime bosses themselves.

Plus Batman has no superpowers and would have extreme difficulty in performing many of the stunts that either a CGI or model batman obviously recreates in this film.

Watch Sub Zero for how this film should have been done and read Hush for a better look a the Poison Ivy character.

Bane broke The Batman's back in Knightfall, he's not just a grunting henchman.

about Lord of the Rings
31 May 2002
First off great film but disagree with comment that without George Lucas and Star Wars there would be no Lord of the Rings or Spiderman, surely there would be no Lord of the Rings without J R R Tolkien and no Spiderman without Stan Lee.

Star Wars was heavily influenced by Tolkien's novels and many other works which came before A New Hope, notably some of Akira Kurosawa's work. This does not make it a bad film as all works of literature reflect on or are influenced by what came before.

The originality of a work of fiction should be decided by how the author takes his influences and changes them enough to create a new spin on them.

George Lucas achieved this with the original Star Wars and the creation of the Star Wars universe and although i think he has set himself a difficult task of getting 40 years worth of back story into three films Attack of the Clones (poor title) is an enjoyable enough film and let's face it is better than both The Phantom Menace and in some respects A New Hope and Return Of The Jedi.

Moulin Rouge! (2001)
A refreshing change
13 September 2001
Words alone cannot describe this cinematic event. It has to be seen.

A welcome change from the same old formulaic Hollywood blockbuster that has dogged the summer and fall schedules.

All I can say is that this is a fantastic update of the traditional musical form and shows that Luhrmann is not a one trick pony riding on the coat-tails of other writers.

In any others hands the cut and pasting of contemporary songs with an operatic score would have appeared just as that: A cut and paste job, but each song weaves into the other as if it were originally intended, in fact a large part of the fun involved on viewing this picture comes from identifying various snippets as and when they appear.

Such a grand film deserves to be seen on the big screen and those who are dismissing the film as overtly gaudy are sure to be disappointed when the film receives the credit it is due and Video will be the only faucet left to view it on.

See this film now and if you are not moved in any way, be prepared to be marked as a miserable old sod!
