Neugdaesanyang (2022)
A decent bloody popcorn flick
This movie ultimately threads 2 plot-lines together along with a mixture of sci-fi in the 2nd half, all of which I thought was actually pretty decently tied together as the film descends into action and bloody carnage. These main points however may be hit or miss for a lot of viewers as evident by the mixed reviews and overall 6/10 rating.
I would say points can still be given to the overall production, as despite the over-the-top violence with the sci-fi element which I won't spoil, the film never feels too silly and the action sequences are mostly pretty cool to watch. The actors are all decent and nothing ever really feels too forced with the survival element of the film. Not for the faint of heart but an overall decent popcorn flick.
Gojira -1.0 (2023)
This is what a monster film should be
Compared to the mediocre American Godzilla films, Godzilla Minus One outshines them in every aspect. The character development is some of the best in a monster movie, the audience can actually connect properly to the human characters in a way that nicely drives the film overall and there are never any dialogue scenes that are a slog to get through. The Godzilla destruction and special FX are also top notch, although there are only a handful of action scenes through the film they are masterfully crafted as Godzilla fights the films protagonists and destroys his way through Japan.
Definitely one of the best monster films in recent years.
Sayen (2023)
Not a bad low budgeter
Surprised at the overall 4.6 rating for this, although the film doesn't offer anything new to the one-against-many trope for an action film, the overall plot is still half decent compared to other higher rated action films in the same ball-park. The lead actress does a pretty good job and the majority of the supporting cast make the film watchable enough.
The cinematography is also pretty decent with some awesome shots of the Chilean landscape which I think definitely adds some points to the production value. Reading about this film I'm not sure making a trilogy is necessary a great idea but not a bad low budgeter as a one time watch.
Becky (2020)
An entertaining Home Alone style crime-thriller
Came across this on Netflix recently and wasn't expecting too much but with hearing Kevin James was playing a bad guy I just had to give it a try! A pretty solid Home Alone style thriller, Lulu Wilson's character does a pretty good job against the group of criminals and and was quite impressive as the lead despite not seeing her in anything before. This is one of those types of popcorn flicks that I would recommend giving a go despite the low rating, I would say this is more like a 6.5 overall but wanted to give a 7 for good measure.
Kevin James was also excellent as the lead bad guy and kept a very menacing tone through the film, will be interesting to see if he plays more villains in future!
The Continental (2023)
An Ok origin story
While the series does have some awesome fight scenes - some of which are almost John Wick level - and the overall plot of a young Winston wanting to take over The Continental does play out at a reasonable pace, the series does seem to focus a bit much on subplots which are most likely written in to pad out the limited running of 3 episodes.
As much as there is still decent character development with building Winston's team, the subplots with the karate dojo and the detective felt like they could have been wrapped up a lot sooner.
Mel Gibson's Cormac also seemed quite forced at times and his script also seemed a bit weak in parts but I guess he gave it his best with what he was given. Not a bad action series overall though.
Jack Ryan (2018)
One of the strongest spy series out there
Admittedly I've never read any of the Jack Ryan books, but the series is one of the more original out of many action/thriller series.
As much as there is hate for seasons 2 and 3 I think overall there is still a degree of consistency with the writing and plot. Although I did think season 3 has too many political subplots which does get confusing, but it was just about all tied up ok towards the end.
John Krasinski and Wendell Pierce definitely carry the series, and overall I didn't think the pacing faltered too much through season 2 and 3.
I would certainly recommend, an excellent spy action/thriller overall.
House of the Dragon (2022)
A pretty solid series but quite slow paced at times
The acting is great, the set designs are great but the script felt very draggy through a lot of the episodes. The main comparison I would have with HOTD and GOT is that GOT, especially in earlier seasons, did an excellent job at building with character development and dialogue tension. With HOTD it seems a lot of the script tries too hard to reach GOT level, and as a result the dialogue in some scenes just felt lacking with how slow it seemed.
The character development was decent however, although I agree with many others in that the time jump seemed a bit messy. I was also a little disappointed we didn't get to see more classic medieval fight scenes especially with how much conflict there is in the series, but maybe we'll see more of this with season 2.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Original, stylistic and awesome.
EEAAO is one of the most original and fun films to have been released in recent years. I must admit as a huge fan of action I thought the multiverse idea blended very well with the action scenes, and of course with how the plot unfolded.
But the main focus for this film is the character development and I guess you could say "message" that makes it stand out amongst the crowd, and I think this was written very well as the multiverse idea was explored.
Also the fact that the production had only a handful of VFX artists is absolutely mind blowing with how the effects were done.
Overall I would highly recommend EEAAO for it's originality and style.
Violent Night (2022)
A Christmas classic?
So with its humorously violent and wacky premise, and paying homage to Christmas classics such as Die Hard and Home Alone, Violent Night may very well become another Christmas classic in years to come.
It offers everything you could hope for with the over the top violence and exaggerated characters, and for this type of film I thought there was actually some pretty decent character development as the plot progressed.
The only real reason I've stuck with an 8 rating is that it doesn't offer too many new ideas with its over the top feel, and there are a few tropes with the villains that have been done many times before in the action genre, but overall Violent Night is a solid watch.
Kateo (2022)
Actually pretty decent
So as a lot of reviewers have said, this type of movie definitely won't be for everyone. But in all honesty, if like me you're a big fan of action then this is a pretty fun film to watch through.
Sure, some of the camera work could be better, and the cgi in some scenes is very obviously cgi, but I did find it quite clever for a lot of scenes how they managed to film in a 'continuous take', and although it does kind of feel like a video game as others have mentioned, I wouldn't say that's necessarily too much of a bad thing as the action is still pretty entertaining throughout.
Overall I don't think this movie deserves such a low score, if you're into action you'll like it. 7/10.
Malnazidos (2020)
A decent zombie flick
Having been hesitant to give this film a go because of the general low rating, I'm honestly quite surprised this only has a 5.8/10, I've seen much worse films that have higher ratings!
Of course for a zombie film it doesn't have a ton of originality, but for the story of it being set during the Spanish civil war was quite interesting, all the actors were great and the effects didn't feel too cheap.
There was also some good character development throughout the film which also helped to drive the plot forward.
Overall I would say don't let the low rating put you off, if you're into zombie films then you'll enjoy this, definitely one of the better Netflix films I've seen of recent.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
A cool adventure through the multiverse
Awesome set designs, nice action sequences and an interesting dive into the multiverse of Spiderman make this film a solid watch. This film certainly takes a different angle with exploring Tom Holland's darker side of Spiderman, which I thought was actually quite a refreshing take from the light-heartedness of the previous Spiderman instalments. It was also nice to see MJ and Ned develop as characters since Homecoming, and of course the special effects were top notch throughout.
Overall this is definitely one of the strongest MCU entries of recent in terms of character development and story. 8/10.
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022)
A decent comedy flick
I'm not a huge fan of Nicholas Cage but I have to say this film hits the mark in terms of not taking itself too seriously, and Pedro Pascal seemed to riff off Cage pretty well and I thought they complimented each other very nicely with the "over-the-top" nature of the film.
The action did seem a little lackluster however, with the main action sequences only taking up around the last quarter of the film, and in all honestly for this type of film I was expecting a little more but it was ok for what is was.
Overall a decent comedy film, worth it just for watching Nicholas Cage play an exaggerated version of himself. 7/10.
The Gray Man (2022)
A decent action/thriller but nothing original
The action sequences are nice enough to watch and the acting is solid enough throughout, but The Gray Man brings nothing new to the action genre with a fairly generic and predictable plot. If you're looking for an average popcorn flick then it's worth a watch, but don't expect too much from this film.
No Time to Die (2021)
An OK send off for Craig's bond, but could have been a lot better
So I've rated 6 for mostly the decent location shots, the (ok) action sequences and the acting for the most part. However, Rami Malek's villain was pretty weak and the overall plot seemed rather lackluster. Lashana Lynch's character was also pretty irritating for the most part and writing her as arrogant and disrespectful to Bond from the get-go made no sense.
Overall the film was OK at best but I felt that Craig's bond deserved a better send off than what we got.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
Good visuals and martial arts but fairly predictable
So the martial arts throughout this movie are very nice to watch, and the visuals for the most part also compliment this (despite the very cgi animals) but there are a couple fairly predictable plot points and I felt that the movie tried too hard to be funny with a few eye-rolling jokes.
Overall probably one of the weaker MCU films but a decent enough watch.
The King's Man (2021)
Better than I expected
Surprised at all the negative reviews, I thought The King's Man was thoroughly entertaining with some great action scenes, cinematography and a decently solid plot.
Sure, there may not be a ton of originality and it's a far cry from the first film - although I thought this one was far better than the second - but overall it kept me hooked til the end, and I would say that this is one of the better action films of recent.
Yacha (2022)
decent but fairly predictable and a bit goofy
A little slow and convoluted to begin with, but once things got going it built up to a reasonable pace with the action and story. However, a lot of the story points became fairly predictable and as a few other reviewers have noted the action was a little goofy at times. The overall film in terms of plot and action scenes definitely could have been executed better, but decent cinematography and acting make this an ok watch.
Furioza (2021)
ok but not really what I was expecting
As other reviewers have said the story can be confusing at times, and there wasn't as much action as I expected for this kind of film, felt like more of a drama for the most part. The actors do a good job but the film could probably have been cut shorter, but an ok watch nonetheless.
Svart krabba (2022)
not terrible but has a few flaws
The action scenes are entertaining enough and the actors do a decent enough job, but the plot is a little convoluted with who the bad guys even are and not much is explained as the film progresses. More details about the apparent war in the film would have also made this a better watch but it's ok to kill a couple hours.
