Office Space (1999)
Time has been exceptionally kind to this movie
As it ages, it seems to get better and better, as some of the seemingly ridiculous notions depicted in this film are coming true. Don't believe me? Haven't we seen: 1) A computer guy in the news for destroying his company? 2) Layoffs of IT guys in the supposed prime of their careers? 3) People of middle-eastern descent in business-sensitive positions? 4) Cookie-cutter apartments, companies and themed restaurants? I could go on and on. The point is, this movie was and is ahead of it's time. The characters were played excellently by the ensemble cast, and they will be interviewed 20 years into the future for these roles, much as people are still interviewing "Animal House" cast members 25 years later.
Enjoyable movie. Even if you live in the USA, but have never worked in an office, lived in an apartment, or eaten at a chain restaurant.
I, Robot (2004)
Thought Provoking
Like the novel, the concept of Robots having a mind of their own, and what problems they might cause or solve, is both thought-provoking and attractive.
While I thought the special effects and action sequences were annoyingly over-the-top (which appears obligatory for films of the 'oughts), the story was well-conceived and very well acted. While this story is not precisely true to Asimov's novel, the concept is the same. I thought the attempt to modernize it for the 2000s was both admirable and helped us appreciate where our current technological direction might take us. Most sci-fi novels, when made into movies, lose their original intent. While this movie ALMOST gets more hung up in effects and actions, I give credit to Will Smith (as both actor and executive producer) for making sure the original concept remained at the heart of the story.
Easily one of the better sci-fi movies of all time!
Unbreakable (2000)
Good Movie, but not quite up to Sixth Sense or Signs
I must admit, I am quickly becoming a "Night" fan. After having seen "Sixth Sense" and "Signs", I had to rent this flick. While it is certainly at a higher level of story quality than your average hollywood thriller, what "Unbreakable" lacks is the realism and viewer absortion of the other two movies.
Willis literally plods through the first half of this film. He seems to be constantly depressed and detached, without knowing why. Problem is, I lost track and interest, as he detached my interest as well.
Once it picks up, and Samuel L. Jackson sort of pulls us back into the film by explaining it's premise, and while I like the overall concept, the die had already been cast. I think this is probably the reason this movie did not get the good reviews and word of mouth that the other two flicks did. I also think that the comic-book theme of this movie, while quite interesting to those who know of this field and subculture, will certainly cause the average movie-goer, and even reviewer, to lose interest. All in all a good, but not great, less than satisfying experience.
Shrek (2001)
Excellent movie for any audience young or old
I have now watched this film with family and friends, aged ranging from 2 to 75, even at the same time, and all enjoyed! Extremely well written, with quite witty dialogue and absolutely excellent graphics and story line. If only all "kid movies" could be this rich in quality. Everyone would watch them!
Me, Myself & Irene (2000)
Incredibly bad taste, poor plot, senseless message
I could not think of the ingredients which would be required to top this movie's combination of poor story line and plot, senseless message and tasteless gags directed toward blacks, little people, Albino's, the ENTIRE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND, people with mental diseases, and trivializing acts of violence. Is there anyone or anything I've missed. I challenge anyone who truly sees any beneficial message to this movie. I am also deeply disappointed in Jim Carey, I have enjoyed many of his films. I could never recommend this one!
