Shocking if not quite mind-blowing
31 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I started watching this movie knowing only that it was going to be about dissidents protesting or fighting back against Israeli people and military. What it is really about is that Israel basically claimed land for itself and built a barrier around that land, when a local village traditionally considered the same land their own and the villagers lived off the land by foraging for food on the trees. The villagers start protesting every Friday, and the narrator starts filming it and other local events involving Israelis.

So with that in mind, at first I felt like the movie is biased and leading. At one point early on the narrator says "Gibreel's first words were a joyous event" or something like that, and then the next thing shown is his son Gibreel saying "wall" (referring to the Israeli-built barrier around the narrator's village) while walking outside near the wall...except in the same scene the son is speaking several other words...i felt like that is leading the viewer when that was almost definitely not when Gibreel spoke his first words.

But then the thoughts of bias give way to the shocking events that take place during the film. If you know about the stuff that goes on over there involving Israel and the occupied territories, it isn't surprising per se...Israel is so hated over there...but seeing several people shot, and at least one killed on camera is pretty intense.

I'd rather not pick sides on what is right or wrong in the actions that take place, because although the narrator claims they are non-violent there are many instances of rocks being thrown at people and especially cars...so many rocks are thrown at the cars at the same time in one moment that you can really see how much the Israelis are hated by a lot of the local people...and who knows what isn't shown in the movie.

Instead I'll just say that this is a very interesting documentary and if you are interested in that area of the world, or if you just enjoy seeing a part of the world you don't normally get a glimpse of, I highly recommend checking this documentary out.

Maybe I'm Just Jaded?
21 July 2010
At the time of this writing, Madeo has 2,800 votes at 8.1 out of 10. Were it to have more votes, 8.1 would firmly put this film into the lower end of the Top 250 list. It would be within striking distance or surpassing the following films: The Thing, Scarface, Casino, Children of Men, and Rosemary's Baby.

Don't get me wrong, the Top 250 has plenty of films on it I wouldn't choose to be there. And there is a plethora of relatively recent films that don't belong anywhere near the list. I'm also not saying all of the above films would necessarily be on my list either, but when I think of the first time I saw most of the aforementioned films I was somewhere inbetween delighted and blown away. And having seen Madeo not 24 hours ago I can safely say this is not an 8.1. This movie probably deserves a full point lower at 7.1, if not slightly less.

Granted maybe something is lost in the translation and it's actually much better in one or more ways, but I refuse to believe that a mildly comical, mildly (to put it mildly) interesting film with underwhelming plot points deserves much credit. In fact the only thing I could say that was truly remarkable about this film is that I am not giving it a "low" rating because of flaws like poor dialogue or stupid character choices or whatever. Although, again, maybe it's just the translation.

Somewhat Immature Characters, Infinitely Beautiful Film
9 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
As the title says, I find the characters somewhat immature in this movie. I'd like to think people are more mature than as portrayed in this film. But I realize some of the characters obviously have problems which can mess you up far into "adulthood", and so with that in mind and without going into a whole discussion about what the writer(s) might be trying to convey...perhaps that we're all immature or that love makes us so or that love transcends differences in people...I'll continue.

This is a film that, if nothing else (in case I haven't mentioned it enough yet), is about love. I get the feeling it might be a metaphor..something like that saying "it is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all." Although these people are trying to have their memories of previous botched relationships erased, they both cling to a certain (however small) part of their love. As we follow Jim Carrey's character, we see him realize he doesn't want to forget the beauty of the moments he shared with his lover and he desperately fights to keep those memories.

I saw this film many years ago, in theaters if I remember correctly, and I remember how my friends really liked it and I thought it was okay but overrated and the characters were kinda dumb (what I now see as immaturity). Seeing it now, mid 2010, and having experienced a lot more of life and the people in it I can say this film is truly beautiful. If you are in the mood for a love story, but more of a disjointed and slightly (emphasis on slightly) Memento-style presentation than the usual lame romantic comedy - look no further. I think I can say this with some authority and authenticity: unless you are a young male, do not avoid.

Kick-Ass (2010)
1/10
Really good? Yes. Top 250? NO.
4 July 2010
7.9/10 Kick-Ass is a really good movie, don't get me wrong. But it's fatal flaw, if you can call it that, is the ending. By the time the 3rd(?) big fight rolls around, you're past the best part of the movie and moving into post-The Matrix slow motion acrobatics meets gun fighting meets karate we've all seen several times before. All of the story has come to pass and all that is left is ridiculous and very comic book-like violence. This is not a bad thing, and the movie IS based on a comic book after all, but I really felt like the movie was SO good up until that point that the rest was just more of the same action we'd already experienced throughout the film while being bereft of anything compelling or new, and was something of a let down.

This is definitely a great movie overall. If the final I dunno 20-30 minutes or whatever had been better this would deserve the place it currently holds in the top 250. As it stands this is a movie that pretty much everyone should see, and you could do A LOT worse.

Date Night (2010)

Pretty good as a film, but not as much as a comedy
4 July 2010
I don't usually read many reviews on this site, other than the occasional review showing on a movie's main page. The review on this one's main page mentions Steve and Tina having a special comedic connection, that they're two of the funniest people in showbiz, and that they rival the best comedic duos of all time.

Tina Fey may be the funniest woman in showbiz, I dunno, but I think the rest is kind of a stretch...although I'm not disputing that either of them has their moments.

This movie, however, didn't really feel like one of them to me. Don't get me wrong, I liked this movie. It isn't particularly great...it's forgettable even. BUT it is still pretty good in all respects: It doesn't have a stupid script, bad dialogue, and is a well made Hollywood film. I didn't think this movie was very funny, but my standards are high. The gag reel from the credits was better than the movie in terms of laughs. That isn't to say that the movie wasn't amusing, just not laugh out loud so.

But as far as a film where a couple wants to have a nice night out and takes other people's reservations at a hard to get into restaurant only to be confused for said people by some seedy elements and crazy antics ensue, it was pretty enjoyable.

Dear God, No.
3 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
**************Possible Spoilers********

Well honestly this deserves something like a high 5...or maybe a low 6 at best. I don't even know where to begin. Most movies like this involve an experiment in a lab that goes horribly wrong and the "experiment" escapes and wreaks havoc. This movie was different in that the scientists want to keep the creature so they move it from a secure laboratory to a barn. You read right...a barn. You've got dilapidated wood, glass windows, hay, an inexplicable hot tub, and a living and quickly growing science experiment. Dear God. You've got the creature killing an animal to eat meat one second, then the female scientist saying "she doesn't eat meat" and that that was "an accident" the next second. You've got the first attempt at a similar creature changing from female to male, but it seems the scientists aren't concerned that this intelligent, unpredictable, and strong creature could do the same. You've got a creature with a tail that has a stinger that can come out of it, so a scientist surgically removes it...problem solved, right? Maybe not when you've created the creature with other animals' DNA for God's sake...

Summary:

Low Point: I saw this movie so you wouldn't have to.

High Point: Human man gets it on with a girl/creature that sports eyebrows (but is somehow completely bald) and, more importantly, wings

Robin Hood (2010)
1/10
So, So Bad
3 June 2010
I really cannot understate how little I think of this film.

Don't get me wrong, it is very well made and if your sole concern when watching a film is that it has a nice Hollywood polish on it then you will enjoy this film. If, however, you go to the movies to see something exciting and your definition of exciting is not something you've seen 100 times before, then you will be extremely disappointed.

Robin Hood has a fairly interesting premise: How did Robin Longstride become the infamous hero of the poor? Unfortunately this film is plagued by several problems. Robin Hood doesn't do anything new, nor particularly well. Instead of focusing on being one type of film it tries to be several, and fails at all in my opinion. It has action, but is isn't groundbreaking or even very exciting except that the film does put a notable emphasis on the deadliness of archery in battles of the time especially during the finale. The film has a love story, but it is so forced that I almost laughed out loud a few times. It is "cute", and Robin Hood would probably be a good date movie, but my God is it lame and childish.

Where this film fails the most, in my opinion, is in some of the small things that can make an otherwise decent movie terrible...as the familiar saying goes, "the devil is in the details." There were several moments where I was baffled by what I was seeing on the screen. I can't really go into these without possibly giving away some of the film, but if you are the type of person who has an active mind and notices small nuances or details of films then you should stay away. Very very far away.

All of that said, this film does have at least one interesting battle scene and although I thought the love story was "trite," Crowe and Blanchett do at least play love interests who are believable in their interest for one another by the end of the film.

So to sum up: Well made film featuring mediocre plot, comedy, and action with pretty poor and forced romance. I felt like this film would appeal to older folks, people who like the historical time period, and people who don't like to think too much while watching a film.

If you have a significant female other that is also interested in this film and you feel like watching an overly long movie, then I certainly condone cozy-ing up with her for 2+ hours.

I think this film deserves a low 6 to mid 6, at best.

Death Race (2008)

Pretty bad movie about racing with weapons
30 January 2010
This is a somewhat enjoyable film with terrible...well, just about everything.

What makes this film enjoyable besides explosions and racing throughout, if that is your thing, are some of the funny things they did with it. For instance, there is an Asian character who speaks in his native tongue with English subtitles but at a later point in time he says "F__k me" in English but with Asian language subtitles.

I say the film is somewhat enjoyable for the funny things, that is what I liked about the film. Everything else is to appeal to a mass audience, but not necessarily a smart one. There is a giant tanker truck with all these guns shooting these racers, yet these "race cars" can't just speed away from a huge, heavy semi truck??? It has a tank barrel on the back, for Christ's sake.

This is the kind of film where there is dialogue, and then the camera focuses on another character who says nothing. What I mean is, this is the kind of film that is pretty stupid and that you can easily make fun of because it makes little sense.

Currently this movie has a 6.6/10, I believe it deserves about a 5 out of 10 so I give it a 1/10 to balance this out.

Orphan (2009)

Nope.
19 October 2009
5 / 10

I watched this movie end not even an hour ago, and yet the movie is not fresh in my mind. This is the first thing that came into my head when I thought "What did I think of the film?" Perhaps I didn't think. The movie was not particularly good, to say the least.

Sure it could have been good, engaging, and possibly even touching (something it didn't occur to me to do with my feminine viewing partner here while watching this "masterpiece"), had I cared about the characters all that much. I called the "twist" (I don't think they were going for M Night here, if you know what I mean, but i guess that's what i'll call it) at least 30 minutes before it aired on-screen. This movie could have been better in that it could have been made before, or I'm even willing to go with after, my time on this earth.

A 7.2 on IMDb should say "this movie is probably enjoyable no matter who you are" not "this movie is probably enjoyable no matter where you are ...other than in the theater it's playing."

It was reasonably well-acted and good production value. I usually give films at least a 5 if they are made and presented decently. It had a story, although I could watch doctors, nurses, and other personnel try to figure out who a Jane Doe is and get about the same enjoyment out of it. Not engaging, nothing new, not scary, BUT very dramatic. This movie tries to have scary moments that simply aren't and doesn't have the story to make you care enough about the characters to make them so. I could see anyone who has known protective feelings toward a child, and emotional-feeling people enjoying, or gripping their seat at, this film.... Not many others.

5 / 10 - Five out of ten.

Star Trek (2009)

Flawed, but still pretty damn good
3 October 2009
7.7 / 10

First I'd like to say that despite my 1/10 vote (to bring it down from top 250, doesn't belong there in my opinion) I give this movie a 7.7 out of 10. I pick this number randomly, not only because I am new to reviewing films on IMDb and it is really hard for me to pick a number out of 10, but also because it was pretty god damn good but definitely not perfect (mountains are crumbling, but people are walking/running without impediment!). So, based on films in the top 250 and their 8+ out of 10, I'll go with a 7.7.

This movie had a few flaws, ones that I commented on and elicited laughter from my fellow men and women. BUT it was very entertaining. I was more of a Star Wars than Star Trek kinda guy, and never really experienced the original series (although I have seen all of the films), but I did very much enjoy the Next Generation episodes I used to watch as well as Deep Space 9 and all of the movies. With that said, if the prequels to Star Wars had been this good (I have to admit I did enjoy Revenge of the Sith a lot), this might (might) have been #1 of 250 after opening instead of whatever it is currently at. Then again, who am I to say that Star Wars is more popular than Star Trek.

In any case, I really enjoyed this film and think it is worth a look whether you are a film buff, Star Trek buff, or just have 10+ dollars burning a hole in your pocket for 2 hours of enjoyment. There is no reason not to watch this movie unless you have something against good movies or something/someone involved with this one.

State of Play (2009)

Only Alright
30 August 2009
State of Play is a reasonably interesting and well crafted movie. That being said, it is somewhat plain and doesn't have anything special to set itself apart from other thrillers. The acting was well done for the most part, but some elements of the story didn't line up (16 y/o junkie tracks down reporter working on a story he hasn't published anything for yet?) Maybe I missed something.

But in any case this story isn't particularly great, or anything more than predictable, but there are worse ways to spend your time and if you like thrillers you will probably enjoy State of Play.

Fun action, thrown together romance
18 July 2009
The action in this film is very well done, reminiscent of "Saving Private Ryan" with angles of shots that make you feel at times like you are seeing what someone participating in the shootouts would see.

The romance seemed a little more thrown together than everything else, and having just read another reviewer's comments that that may not have been as factual as the rest of the movie's content, I find that fairly believable.

The movie doesn't disappoint for the most part though, and if all or even most of what occurs in the film is based on true events, Dillinger was indeed a very likable(sp) guy, in a "i steal money and kill people, then act nonchalantly about it" kinda way.

The only problems this film had were some character dialogue and/or choices being stupid or bad, and it was kinda lengthy but still managed to be enjoyable (and possibly educational...or is that a con?) for the most part.

Decent flick whose flaws aren't in it's script/acting/dialogue but in it's lack of identity

Warning: Spoilers
****************SPOILERS - READ ONLY AFTER VIEWING...OR, ON MY RECOMMENDATION, DECIDING NOT TO****************

This film is definitely an interesting one. Saying that I enjoyed it for the most part may perplex you based on my rating of 6/10.

First I will say that a good ending can save an otherwise mediocre film, but a bad ending usually hurts or even ruins a decent one. Sure, this film has a "good" ending in that nobody dies. I guess my gripe with this film (and by guess i mean i know what i think but want to seem indifferent to appeal to the most people...will the real joe lieberman please stand up) is that this film doesn't know what it wants to be, other than perhaps an eye-opener on Asperger's. It is part depression leads to fantasy worlds a la "the fall," part consequences of being bullied in high school, and part m. night shayamalan film.

Anyway, as is often the case the movie was decent but it had one fatal flaw, in this case the ending. In that respect, it was kinda like my last relationship...it ended with sex, but it would have been preferable if it had been CONSENSUAL.

I really regret throwing away that armoire...

VERY VERY FUN MOVIE...if you like to "joke on 'em"
6 April 2009
First of all, I would like to say that this movie really sucks. I went to a screening with my girl after having a couple drinks at the restaurant next door. We both like horror movies and zombie flicks, and in terms of having fun this movie was GREAT. I usually enjoy making fun of movies where logic goes out the window or character dialogue/actions border on ridiculous or stupid. But with a beer or two in me, and my girl there to joke with, i was making swiss cheese of this movie's goings-on. I gave it a 5 because the effects were good and overall the movie was well made. There are much worse movies out there. I am a fan of Romero's older works...for those reading this and wondering.

To sum it up: Grab your wits, your girl, a few friends, a few brews, or all of the above, and enjoy the show. If you are looking for anything other than a laugh, look elsewhere.
