The Arrival (1996)

Very good Sci Fi
17 July 2023
When you realize this movie is over 25 years old, it holds up pretty well.

I hadn't seen it in probably over a dozen of those years, and two of the parts most memorable to me, were great to see again. A Good Friday nite popcorn movie!

Charlie Sheen fits the movie style quite well and the acting from everyone overall not bad for a 90's movie. Over the top acting is pretty much standard for the 90's, and adds to the vibe.

It reminds me of The Invaders tv show from the 60's, with a physical giveaway to the aliens cover...but I think Independence Day copied this film's look and feel of the aliens best.

Messed up islanders
16 January 2023
It's at first boring and dull and then slowly becomes a bit interesting...(the will he or won't he.)

But then it's back to the inevitable dull and boring.

Then interesting again but less so (the will he or won't he again!)

But I loved the Dominic character and the movie kinda runs over his storyline, which is actually the more interesting by the end.

And why are most of the villagers just background? No one helps bandage injuries or stop child abuse, or even be at the house at 2pm for the near conclusion when of course it spread to all on the island what was to occur.

Did I love the cinematography? Resounding yes.

Did I love the acting? Pretty much from all.

The directing, very good too.

But the story is ultimately what you'll remember and ensure you'll never want to watch this movie ever again. One and done as they say. At least for me.

End result...this would never be on my recommended list.

Stepford wives for 2022
8 November 2022
It's Stepford Wives for the uninitiated.

With similar themes and setting...though I'll grant the methods are fresh and updated for 2022.

I do like this type of movie and for what it was, I thought it was pretty good.

The acting wasn't superb, but I thought the director got the best out of everyone.

It does make me want to go see the original Stepford Wives and the later remake with Nicole Kidman...tho the original was perfect.

(Did you increase the required size of these reviews? 600 characters is a lot! Please reduce down to 300-400. This is more work than fun and it should be fun to leave reviews!!!!)

Could have been better
20 August 2022
I like Michelle Monaghan, so decided to try.

The movie plot is not terrible, but it's not well executed unfortunately. Too many flashbacks.

At first glance I thought the Sheriff would be annoying, but she ended up being the best part! I hope I see her in more stuff. Kind of like a female Colombo.

Last...I guessed at the ending and was wrong for a change. (I guess there's that.)

Better than it's current rating allows
31 July 2022
I have to say it has its merits to equal out its faults.

One thing is that horror movies, especially these kind, no longer give me "jump" scares, but surprisingly this one did get me pretty good once!

The acting wasn't bad for the leads and the filming itself was actually pretty good considering confined in a vehicle for half the movie.

Overall it had enough for me to enjoy it.

Perfect popcorn movie
1 June 2022
If you like action, bank heists, some minor twists added in, then this is the perfect Friday night movie.

Of course, as is with most high adrenaline action flicks, leave reality at the door and just enjoy!

Good story idea, but that's all
29 May 2022
Genuinely good plot idea but the execution was pretty bad. I liked the characters but the acting pretty terrible and definitely B movie quality.

I just wish the ending was better explained, Ex: the babies?

Weird, but I really liked it!
16 May 2022
With so many bad reviews I'm feeling kinda weird saying I really liked this movie but I did. And so did my husband.

The plot was unique, the acting good, (but takes awhile to get used to the characters) and the music was appropriately building the mood.

I thought the ending was a surprise twist as well. It wasn't what I was expecting, but I like an ending that surprises me.

Someone here said it's a drive-in movie and I felt the same way.

Wonderful cast
22 April 2022
This movie has a lot more than most. Great cast, realistic settings, schmaltzy story. Yes, I cried on cue. Hence the 6 rating.

But...there's a lot missing too.

Like why would the distant sister have to give up her life to take care of three Ill family members? And would she really? Never seemed to fit true in this story..

She was guilt tripped about it by her sister saying Dad wouldn't do it to Mom. But that was decades ago and it was his wife. Should a child give up the life they want when there are other safe means of care for their loved ones?

Some do it easily and willingly from love and obligation. But others would be miserable.

A generational quandary.

Not the worst movie I've seen..,
22 April 2022
The movie has an ok concept, tho it's been done much better before.

An AI implant controls a human being...and then more and more human beings.

The top reviews here have to be from cast and crew...no other explanation.

I wish I could say more in its favor...as the lead actress wasn't bad,,,but it was simply and majorly a bore fest.

Who is this film intended for?
21 March 2022
Creepy horror music, shadowy figures, witchcraft references, similar in style to Get Out, I expected something true to actual horror movie style in the end result. Racism shown along the lines of Get Out would have fit in as well.

Racism on its own is indeed a horror and it's horrible but why depict mixed in with this crap? It's certainly not going to reach or hit home with someone might be intended for. And the rest of us? Who already get the true injustice of elitism and racism, we deserved better.

White entitlement...a movie depicting the harm in real terms? Fine, go for it. But leading everyone down an obscure path of witchcraft inuendo to try and depict? Maybe done well could work, this definitely wasn't.

The writer and director showed no perspective and just left most of us lost. Too many disconnected scenes with no evident purpose simply tossed in as filler.

Horrible movie (not horror) with an even more horrible ending. Very disappointed.

How did this movie get greenlit?
7 February 2022
This is a hideous movie.

The sets are horrible.

The music jarring.

The acting wooden.

The story? What story?

The movie can't show you anything of plot point because it offers more ...way more...than it can give. Turning people to animals? I get that's it's just a plot point but it delivers nothing.

Just awful! I watched for Colin Farrell but why haven't I learned my lesson?...like with Nic Cage? Just because they once were good actors doesn't mean they still are... so look at the reviews first!!!

Flaws but still pretty wonderful
7 February 2022
I wish this had been edited a bit more hence the 9 rating, but I wouldn't know where to cut. All of it pretty great.

Don't listen to what you may have heard. It's no flop of any kind.

It's the perfect feel good good over evil movie. It's got a hero, who's an average kinda lazy guy who doesn't look for greatness. But when there's a couple paths he could choose, he chooses right.

So do lots of other normal people.

The hero gives the people hope but it also gives hope to the viewer, that after an apocalypse, most would do the right thing.

Impressive
3 February 2022
I wasn't sure I'd like it, especially with dubbing. They did a pretty good job with the last.

I laughed out loud a couple times and hid my head at the brutally dark kill scenes. And the mixture of comedic spoof and crime brutality weirdly works.

If not for the rushed love story I'd have rated higher.

Fantastic homage to the movie Seven. Overall a great addition to superhero movies.

Fun just ignore the holes
1 February 2022
I liked the series. Especially viewing how Korean kids typically behave in their normal environment.

As to the zombies, they are pretty standard and the kids make the same moves as in most zombie flicks. Ex: staring for seconds too long before reacting, then jumping in to sacrifice themselves, etc Basically, what kids would likely NOT do.

But I still enjoyed it immensely. It's a fast paced energy thrill ride.

Great tale of brother vs brother
25 January 2022
I was wrapped in this movie from start to finish.

The tale of two brothers overcoming a tragedy when the younger brother accidentally triggers a violent occurrence that will take them both on a fateful path.

They choose differing walks in life and the viewer hopes for a good end. A must see movie. All involved did a great job!

Missed the mark, but good acting/cinematography

Warning: Spoilers
The story of a mother's descent into madness. Watching it is depressing and the metaphor of depression being the monster would have been ok but it just doesnt work here.

SPOILERS: the movie takes the time to set up the depression/monster premise with the father's tale of a tall thin monster when he was young, and that his sister one night was asking for his help and when he doesn't come, his sister jumps out a high window to her death. That leaves the father living with guilt, tho it appears he did later try to love his wife in the beginning even making her a beautiful gown. But otherwise he's a sad lonely man who stares off in the wasteland and builds scarecrows at the perimeter of his property to keep the monster away.

The father finds a man in a boat and that man subsequently killing himself gives the father just the reason he needs to leave his unaffectionate wife who only cuddles and coos and sings and bathes creepily with her son.

The mom knows he probably won't be back when he leaves to return the dead man to his family. He can barely look at his son as he rides away telling his son to take care of your mother.

How the father's horse and packs return to the house is unexplained, tho they do look bloody so I'd guess the Mom killed him before he got far or killed him if he did indeed return(?)

The Mom then descends quickly into madness. The young boy has it tough trying to keep her (and himself) alive. He succeeds for awhile but the last scene with the tall thin man within his eye would seem to mean he's scarred and the depression monster and/or madness will find him sooner or later.

Don't listen to high reviews
18 January 2022
This is shudderingly bad!! The acting is horrible, the plot and direction terribly handled. The only good thing was the idea for this story but even that not that great as it thinks it is. Nothing was a surprise by the end.

Please do yourself a favor and run away...fast!

Wasted actors
17 January 2022
The movie has a terrible dread feel to it. Problem is, that's all it's got. The title is stupid and not applicable to anything really. Except one vain ghost describing herself which is likely the case and pointless to the overall movie. The whole movie is pointless and I love a good ghost story. This doesn't come close.

Good but not more
14 January 2022
Begin with a great Nora Roberta mystery. Add in a bad scriptwriter, fuzzy directing, and so so acting and you have tepid results. I feel Netflix could have done better by this new Alyssa Milano vehicle but not exactly sure what went wrong here and who's feet to lay blame. Maybe crunching in the book's timelines so everything moved too fast to be believable in movie world? Ex: her sister killed day after she moves in and she has also already met the detective living next door who'll be assigned to the case. So it was ok for a Thursday evening movie find, but definitely not something you'd look forward to.

Good survival movie as long as you put aside common sense!
13 January 2022
I actually liked it, with two exceptions.

Dangling off a cliff to get phone reception? Get solid footing and handholds first!

Second, (no spoilers) but the last scene was extremely depressing!

Different but as good as the first
10 January 2022
I loved that they changed things up. Going after a bus filled with kids adds many more potential victims than the first movie, but watching this frightening demon hunt them one by one is horror at its best.

There's a bit more of, "why would you do that" moments, but it's thoroughly enjoyable nonetheless. This unique creature story continues and doesn't disappoint. Can't wait to watch 3 (a prequel to 2 I believe) and 4 is coming out in 2022!!

Near perfect horror movie
10 January 2022
I love this movie. Could watch it over and over.

It's got all you need for an engrossing engaging horror filled adventure.

Two kids, brother and sister, come upon a suspicious being dumping bodies down an old barrel shute to an abandoned church cellar.

The being is not human and we learn early on it wants or needs something from its potential victims. The discovery ride it takes you on is time well spent and enjoyed.

Just awful adaptation
6 January 2022
Ok I get that the movie powers that be take the easy road when they find a little extra money lying around. Simply said...throw it at a ghostly remake.

But 1961's "The Innocents" is hard to top. It's spooky atmosphere and great acting based on the same novella as this is truly the best.

2009 tried to top it with the TV movie "The Turn of the Screw" but failed as well. Tho it's still better than this!

So why try again to adapt a difficult and confusing novella "The Turn of the Screw?"

They fail miserably in this newest adaptation. The screenwriter and director did lousy jobs. What an insult the two ambiguous endings offered are to the viewers.

Go find the 1961 version which does a really good job explaining the ghosts and what they are up to. This version just leaves you hanging.

A generational thing?
5 January 2022
I loved all prior versions but this one not so much. My daughters like this version, so I think a generational thing.

There's no way it comes close to the emotional pull of the 1994 version (with superb acting by Susan Sarandon and Winona Ryder and Claire Danes and Christian Bale and the rest.)

Amy in this version? Her voice grates in the past/younger scenes.

Emma Watson as the oldest sister just didn't look the right age in past or present scenes.

The back and forth from past to present, dizzying and dull.

All in all not the best version by far.
