Not as bad as I thought it would... it's actually much, much worse
12 January 2022
For starters, let me explain my thoughts on the franchise as a whole. I don't want to come off as whiny or give the impression I frown upon the entire series. My favorite Fast movies are the original, Fast Five, and Furious 7, the latter being where the series should have ended, in my opinion. I do get some enjoyment out of 4 (2009) and 2 Fast 2 Furious, as well. Things started going downhill for me a little bit with the last one... but Fast 9 just plummets straight off a clip and all the way to the bottom.

I won't get too much into the lack of logic and physics... although its many unrealistic action sequences are problematic, I feel it's one of the more obvious flaws of the film and so I won't rant about that too much.

But one thing that really does bother me, is how contrived this movie is. Nothing about the plot / story (what little bit of plot we get, anyway) is in any way, shape or form, convincing. Everything feels so shoe-horned in just so we can get the crew back together for some crazy action sequences that end up being quite dull for how mind-numbingly outrageous they are.

A few examples of these forced plot points are... having Dom's "brother" come back after never hearing him mentioned once in the previous 8 films...? Let's also consider that Dom is known as the "family man" and to try to convince us viewers that now all of a sudden... just nope. Not working for me.

Han's "death" and resurrection... nope, not buying that one either.

Mia gets involved in the action because of Jacob, her and Dom's brother... Right. Makes it even more believable that Brian would stay home. Not. (His character is of course, kept alive within the universe) Those are some of the more obvious examples, but there a ton others I won't get into.

Another thing that really grinds my gears (pun intended) is that the characters have all lost their personalities. They've all become caricatures of what they once were. No more growth or character development. No more story arcs for them. The dialogue is nothing but one liners and comedic relief.

It's also hard to feel any attachment to any of these characters when they are essentially invincible. Oh, and they joke about it in the movie as well. Oh, don't get me started on the bits of "meta" the movie takes on. It tries to be funny by being a bit self-aware of how ridiculous it all is and it's not funny... at all.

Another thing that pissed me off. There's no authentic Fast and Furious traits to this movie. Not a single street race, excluding a brief flashback. Wtf?

I'm not one to say that they were only good when they were about street racing. I kind of even disagree with that crowd... they've always had elements of crime / drama / action. Fast Five is probably my favorite of the franchise. But those movies also were much more grounded to reality and had the trademarks of the franchise including good soundtracks and awesome racing sequences. This movie literally had neither of those things. Instead, the sole focus of this film is ridiculous action sequence after ridiculous action sequence... followed by a brief, "touching" moment of emotional dialogue between a couple of the "characters", only to be interrupted by another mind-boggling unrealistic scenario with even more unrealistic outcomes.

*Sigh* I could keep going, but I'll cut it short here. In summary, this is not only my least favorite of the franchise, I believe that this is the first truly bad film of the series. One of the worst movies I've seen in a long time, possibly ever. A disgrace.

The only reason I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 1 is because it was... watchable... somewhat. 1 star movies are reserved for those that are so bad that it takes every ounce of willpower to even sit through it. This one didn't quite reach those levels but came close.

Sorry. I love the Fast And Furious franchise, but this movie sucked.

Misery (1990)

Disappointing when compared to the book
25 August 2021
Well, I went into this movie after having read the book, and I can say that this movie doesn't even hold a candle to what the book is.... both objectively and subjectively.

This movie is a pretty straightforward, linear thriller. The book is so, so, SO much more than that with layers of depth to it and a much more coherent and gripping story.

However, I can appreciate this film for what it is. I think that if I had seen this movie prior to reading the book, or maybe even seen it when I was younger, I would have liked it much more than I do now. The acting in this movie is very solid, especially Kathy Bates' performance. James Caan did very well also, for what he had to work with.

Overall I don't think this is a bad movie at all... but I think most reviews on here giving this movie 8-10 star ratings are from people who haven't read the book... I will admit I didn't enjoy this movie that much for that reason alone. There are also many differences between the two, and I can't knock the movie too much for it considering I understand some of the challenges they faced in adapting it to the big screen.

One brief thing I wanted to mention, is I didn't like the soundtrack to this movie. I feel like a soundtrack can sometimes make or break a movie. While it doesn't go either way in this case, it closely leans towards the "break" side for me. The soundtrack is just too intrusive and hasn't aged well.

In summary this movie was okay and I can see why it's a cult classic. Had I watched this years ago before I ever read the book I probably would have liked it much, much more than I do now. As it is, I give this movie 5 / 10 stars. Not bad, but do yourself a favor and pick up the book. To simply say it's better is a wild understatement.

Cat People (1942)
7/10
A great, classic, psychological horror film
25 April 2021
Just watched this movie for the first time, and while I do have some issues with it, I really enjoyed this one. I especially liked the layers of subtext and themes this movie has. It's not just a cheap entertainment B movie - There's a lot of substance here that can really be analyzed if so desired. I really liked the psychological aspect and the little bit of mystery surrounding the "Cat People" lore within the film, even if the little plot twist at the end was a bit predictable. The acting is pretty good. Some of the dialogue is a little hokey but that goes along with most movies of this time period. The ending wasn't entirely satisfying, not because of the outcome, but how it occurred left just a little to be desired. I also felt that the main character, Irena, wasn't given the justice she deserved. But in a way. It made the movie more emotional and compelling. Really just some minor personal complaints with the story direction is all I have. But like I said, the way that it was done, makes the movie even more impactful and heart-wrenching.

I highly recommend this one if you're into classic horror films. While not one of my all time favorites, I can see that this movie was way ahead of its time and I really appreciate what it was doing. It takes some of the psychological aspects introduced in the "Wolf Man" and takes them to a whole new level and with new layers of subtext and better character dynamics than Lon Chaney's well-known horror classic. (Even though I still think The Wolf Man is the superior movie).

A solid 7.5 / 10 for me. This is one I'll likely rewatch in the future.

How did this get turned into a franchise?
20 March 2021
Seriously... I don't understand how this movie spawned sequel after sequel thus evolving into the colossal franchise that it now is. This was my first time watching this movie. I figured I'd been missing out on something great all these years, knowing how popular and massive this series of films is, and after watching the first one, I literally have no interest in watching the others. This movie was super boring, there was literally almost no story or plot... the film feels VERY dated / it has not aged well at all, and that can't be excused by its release date, for there are many horror films released in the 60s and 70s (70s especially) that have aged far better than this one! The characters are dumb. It doesn't seem believable that the killer was who she ended up being and managed to get away with / kill everyone that she did. The "Final Girl" is especially stupid, yet manages to outwit and outfight the killer... ummm.... yeah, okay.... sure....

I get that this movie is a classic, that is spawned an entire franchise, but I think a large majority of Jason / Friday fans are ones who grew up with this movie. I have no nostalgia or sentimental lens to look at this film through, all I can do is look at it compared to other classic horror films that I've seen, and honestly... this one sucks. I'll take TCM, Nightmare on Elm Street, or even Halloween over this any day of the week. This movie honestly blows. The only redeeming factors of this movie for me, were some of the kills were pretty gory and intense (there was some good use of practical effects, no doubt) and.... actually, that's the only redeeming factor I can think of. The reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 2 or 3 is simply because I've (unfortunately) seen even worse horror movies than this. While I could sit through this one at least, I still didn't care for and I'm truly mind-boggled how this movie created such a monster franchise and fandom.

Maybe the sequels get better...? Maybe I should try watching those...? I don't know, but not sure if it's worth it to find out, either.

Evil Dead (2013)
5/10
Very mixed opinions on this entry
7 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It seems like the majority of Evil Dead fans have this one as either their favorite or least favorite in the franchise. I don't see a lot of reviews in the middle-ground area. And it seems like the larger percentage of people love this movie rather than dislike it.

As for me, I seem to be in a very small minority. Anyway, let me share my thoughts.

The Positives: What I really like about this movie is the setup/story. The whole idea of some friends trying to get their friend clean/sober from drugs by taking her to an isolated cabin where she won't have any access to the drugs, is a very good setup that actually gives the characters a solid reason for being there and not wanting to leave, even when things start to get a bit weird. This movie also has the best plot-line in the entire franchise, at least in my opinion, and that is the whole concept of Mia trying to get sober and all of the underlying themes in the movie of her really just battling "herself" / her evil nature, beating the addiction, etc. I like that extra layer of depth to the movie and the subtle symbolism through that aspect of the story.

Another thing I really like is some of the camera shots / cinematography, like where the camera starts tilting to the side at a couple of points, I.E., during the ending sequence when it starts raining blood. It's very cool and effective.

I also really like some of the action and violence in this movie. The whole scene with the nail-gun was exceptionally brutal. It made me cringe in horror, and yet it was very entertaining at the same time. I enjoyed the amount of blood and gore in this movie. It was over-the-top during some sequences and very much felt like an Evil Dead movie. The whole ending / climax part of the movie where it was raining blood was really freaking good and intense. Loved it.

The Negatives: What I DIDN'T like about this movie, for starters, was the soundtrack. I know that might sound like a weird complaint, but I really did not care for the soundtrack at all. It felt very intrusive on the movie. It was very basic / generic, and the sound grew very loud during jump scares or action sequences in order to make it seem more "dramatic" or "intense", but it had the opposite effect on me. I found it a bit annoying and kind of ruined the atmosphere that the movie had started to build upon. Leading to my next complaint with this movie, was how seriously it tried to take itself. Most of the action / possession / kill scenes are too over dramatic for my tastes and kind of dampens the whole effectiveness of them. It doesn't make them scary to me at all because of how "serious" the movie tries to be during these moments. The way its filmed, the sound, the focus on the demons/deadites, it just kind of ruins it for me a little; and also, most of these scenes take place with specific characters when they are "conveniently" isolated from the rest of the group, which leaves these scenes feeling detached and isolated from the rest of the movie, and not in a good way. It feels kind of cluttered and like they are there for obvious reasons: Shock value, gore, etc. On this level the movie (in my opinion) does not succeed in scaring anyone. I do not find this movie frightening or unsettling at all as it is just too over dramatic. The least they could have done to help balance that out is acknowledge the little bit of cheesiness in these scenes and touch on it with some more humor / one-liners or visual jokes.

My other negatives with the movie are just simple logical fallacies and plot holes with the story. Such as, how does Mia suddenly come back to life after being buried and then resurrected with the car battery after it apparently not working? How does she kill the deadite with the chainsaw when it's explained that it needs to be burned to be killed? Etc. - there are some other things in this film that just don't quite add up.\

Overall, I'm very torn with this movie. I really WANT to like it, and there are certain aspects of the movie that I really enjoy and think that they did very well, but on the other hand, I think they really screwed up in some areas and as a whole I felt like the movie falls a little flat. It's not a bad movie, but it's not great, either. Not sure where it falls on my ranking list of the Evil Dead franchise, but it's definitely not at the top.

5.5 / 10 stars

Braindead (1992)
8/10
The most gleefully gory movie I've ever seen
31 January 2021
This movie is more of a comedy than it is horror, but the use of gore in this film is quite horrific. It manages to disgust you and satisfy you at the same time. It is so over-the-top that it actually leaves you feeling a little braindead after watching it, but it's so entertaining that its worth it. I can only recommend it to those who aren't squeamish at the sight of blood; because, there is a hell of a lot of it in this flick. One of my all time favorite horror/comedies.

Simply the best
29 January 2021
I don't get scared by horror movies. As much as I love them, I don't get scared. But sometimes they unnerve me, make me uneasy, etc. It doesn't happen very often. This is one of the few horror movies to ever do that. When I first watched it years ago, it DID actually scare me. After rewatching it so many times, that effect wears off, and I don't really get scared by it, but I still find it disconcerting. This movie is atmospheric and unrelenting. This is a horror movie lover's horror movie. Maybe not the best.... but this is my personal favorite horror flick of all time. I've seen it several times already and will continue watching it through out my life. Very few horror movies have succeeded in doing (at least as well) what this movie has done; which is building a tense atmosphere, building suspense to such a high level, and then just dropping pure, no-holds-barred horror and mayhem upon you. It grabs you and doesn't let go.

A Quiet Place (2018)

I don't understand all the raves and reviews for this movie...
29 January 2021
My main issue with this movie that ruined it for me... is how INCONSISTENT it is. Nothing makes sense in regards to the "rules" of the creatures, the noise that triggers them... there is just so much conflicting stuff going on in this movie that it's hard to ignore it. An interesting idea, for sure. I like the premise. It's a bit different, a bit creative. I think that's what most people are basing their ratings off of. But... it just doesn't work. It's so poorly executed. I'm not going to even list every individual scene or example as to what I am talking about because it would take too long. I just did not enjoy this movie. Plot holes are glaring. Logic gaps are endless. Yes, it's a cool/somewhat unique idea... but it really, really fell flat. I give it 3 / 10 because there are far worse horror movies out there, but I simply did not enjoy this film. It's even cheesy at times. It does have its moments of suspense. The acting isn't bad; but not exactly superb, either. This flick was just not my cup of tea. If you can easily suspend your disbelief and maybe view this as a cheap horror rather than A+ suspense/thriller movie like most make it out to be, then maybe you will enjoy it more than I did.

Also... I know I said I wasn't going to give any examples, but that ending... if you've seen it, you know. It's stupid as heck. And why, just then, after XX amount of years... they just now figured that out to defeat the creatures? *facepalm*

Just discovered this masterpiece 54 years after its release...
28 January 2021
...And it has officially taken status as one of my favorite horror movies of all time. At the very least, it's in my top 5 - if not higher on the list than that, even. This movie is labeled as a comedy/horror, though I failed to see the comedy elements in it. I never laughed once (that I recall), but rather, I was enthralled and fascinated by the sheer eeriness, creativity, and excellent performance of the cast of this film. This movie is apparently one of the original inbred-cannibal type films, inspiring movies such as TCM, Hills Have Eyes, and also (from what I've read) inspired Rob Zombies House of 1000 Corpses. Which I can easily see. This movie is lighthearted at times, and is satisfying in a messed up sort of way... but it also left an emotional impact on me that few (or possibly no) other horror films have ever done. I both despised the characters of the Merrye family and loved them at the same time. I was rooting for them and wanting them to kill - and also sympathizing with their degenerate mental conditions... what kind of a movie can pull that off? There is a little bit of humor in this film, but its very latent and dark humor, there are no obvious jokes. In fact, that is one of my small complaints with the movie is that it is a bit too lighthearted at times. But, I suppose that was necessary, because if the very few and far in between comedy elements of the movie were removed, this movie would have been way too dark. It's already pretty dark as it is - but its downplayed a little by the quirkiness and hidden references and black humor laced through out the film; for better or for worse, depending on your preference.

All in all, I absolutely LOVED this movie. Can't believe I've just now discovered it. Yes, it's not perfect. Yes, there are a few small complaints I have with it. (Could have been a little bit darker / less humor, could have been more violent, etc.) but as it is, this movie is a masterpiece and I highly recommend watching it. That ending... I won't spoil it, but that ending is one of the saddest and most emotional endings I've ever seen to any horror movie ever. I didn't want it to happen... but it was necessary. The acting performances of the characters were all so phenomenal that it made it all the more emotional watching it. I don't very often get invested or immersed into a horror movie, even as much as I love them... it just doesn't happen.... but this movie sucked me in and wouldn't let go.
