Watchmen (2019)
9/10
30 years ago I got blown away by Alan Moore, 10 years ago I was less impressed with the movie, now I got blown away again by Dave Gibbons!
20 December 2019
I read Watchmen roughly 30 years ago while I am in college. I was a foreign student and not familiar with America pop culture. I thought comic was for children and I was dead wrong. In addition to Watchmen I also read the Sandman by Neil Gaiman and I became a devoted fan. I think Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Frank Miller and others have demonstrated to the mature readers that graphic novels can be equally profound and sophisticated.

2009 I watched the Watchmen movie, it was an adequate adaptation but did not add too much to the original work. I was happy to see it on the big screen.

Then this TV series has added multiple layers to the original universe and made it interesting. It was great fun to take Alan Moore's story for a ride and came up with an original story. My hats off to Mr. Gibbons and thank him for an enjoyable season of fun!

I knew nothing about the movie before I watched and I enjoyed it very much

Warning: Spoilers
Before I pop the DVD into the player, I didn't know what to expect. I know Jason Statham is in the movie but I didn't know what the story is about. Of course I didn't know it was a remake and the director's name is totally new to me. All of the above has made this a pleasant cinematic experience for me. I have to confess that I fell asleep not long after the movie started because I was pretty tired that day. I was woken by the shout of the umpire (moderator?) and saw the spider light bulb turned on. I was captivated by the following scene and wide awake for the rest of the film. I think the acting is superb, Sam Riley has done a great job transitioning from a fear stricken first round player to the seething finalist. Michael Shannon is also great as the umpire; you can sense the evil in him playing god. The wickedness can also be found among the gamblers and their complete disregard (disrespect) for human lives. Even the light bulb has some evilness in it! The director perhaps trying to relay the message that we are just pawns of fate and there is no escape in the end. It is a pretty dark movie but the mood is consistent throughout and captivating overall. Ignorant is bliss.

Japanese homage to StarTrek?
4 December 2010
I have just finished watching this movie at the Toho Cinemas in Ginza. By the way, they are going to demolish this perfectly good building (only 10 years old?) in December 2010 so watching this movie at this theater is kind of like hearing the Swan Song from both the building and my childhood memory.

Since I don't remember the story of the TV animation, I can't say whether there is any connection between the original story and the film. However, all the familiar characters are there. The ubiquitous Kimura Takuya is the leading man and the rest of the cast are the cream of the crop of Japanese cinema. However, a star-studded cast is not able to save a poor script or poor acting. Perhaps Hollywood has exhausted the genre of sci-fi and it is futile to try something original. But the great similarity to the StarTrek (2009) is still astonishing. From the story plot to the design of the bad guy's spaceships, it is pathetic to hear that the producer has planned 36 years to bring this icon to the big screen. If this film is trying to pay homage to StarTrek, they have done a really poor job for it.

Did I miss a chapter or what?
22 September 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I left hanging in the air after watching this movie and I have came to this site to try to find some answer. This is supposed to be a simple story but with the right twist it has the potential to be an interesting film. However, the script is so full of holes that it failed to deliver the final punch at the end of the film.

What was the full plan of Wilson? How does it work for sending his son into the bank prior to his arrival would 1) kill or imprison the character Mackey, 2) let him get away with robbing the bank, 3) profit from this robbery?

What was the purpose of killing the character "Philip"; how does it relates to rest of the plots? I like the style and pace of this movie but the higher the expectation generated from the ride, the bigger the disappointment at the end...
